January 11th, 2008, 07:21 PM
Nice drawings, I think the ones on the bus are pretty cool. For some reason I really like the shading on the second bus pic.
January 11th, 2008, 09:00 PM
I love that one on bus too. You got an excellent line quality, I think that I'll see you post more nice stuff. Would like to say it will be better if you can make those images a little bigger.
January 11th, 2008, 10:23 PM
i really like your nudes very cool
January 17th, 2008, 05:42 AM

December 6th, 2008, 03:56 PM
Great stuff Jeff, especialy the tree. Love it!
December 6th, 2008, 04:37 PM
This sb is alllll goooood. Your bus drawings are awesome, I've always wanted to use bus time for something but it's too bumpy to draw on mine :( I nap. Your digital pieces are fantastic, the colors are making me salivate.
December 6th, 2008, 05:00 PM
Wow, really amazing stuff in here. Love you bus drawings!
The enviros are awesome too!
December 6th, 2008, 06:46 PM
great colours on that last one, nice flecks of saturated red too. that drawing of the tree roots further up is incredible, gorgeous stuff.
December 7th, 2008, 06:37 AM
thanks Ej, grafguy, grue, MJ_Alcazar and wookiedabo
Pseudocognition: luckily the bus ride for me is relatively smooth, tho sometimes i do get abit carsick which doesn't help. Should totally do it! haha
I always see such awesome photos when i flick through national geo
I just want to draw them! (but also trying to see if can get the tone right)
the lady holding the giant leaf just seemed bizzare haha
these are from photo refs (except for my hand)
need to draw more from life! gonna go on a mission
O! feel free to crit too, blast'em to bits!
i'll take everything on board
December 7th, 2008, 06:45 AM
the way you blocked the models in your first post is amazingly clear. I think you should do more that way. even in faces. gets the sturcture very obvious.
December 7th, 2008, 07:32 AM
Some great things in here man, I especially like the last few digital paintings
with your pencils, watch that you don't cover things with too much tone. Keep the form in mind. If you render on all planes without a purpose it can do more harm than good.
keep it up dude.
December 7th, 2008, 07:43 AM
ashess/Monsi: o yes i'll definitely have to remember/watch that
can get abit carried away sometimes, thanks for the feedback!
very helpful indeed
December 7th, 2008, 12:28 PM
Lovely sketchbook mate, thanks for sharing!
December 7th, 2008, 01:21 PM
awesome sketches. the drawings from your busrides are great
and I really enjoy your painting style in the canyon piece.
would love to see more.
December 8th, 2008, 07:39 AM
Thanks Tigermilk and monotony
i'll have to draw more on the bus!
here some sketches of my left hand
and another selfportrait (from mirror this time!)
December 8th, 2008, 08:04 AM
hey man, your work is great. I love the lady holding the giant leaf. It just feels so whimsical. Great stuff. Keep at it :)
January 24th, 2009, 09:53 PM
o abit of a late reply but thanks newman101!
heres another pic i did recently, just for fun
mm maybe i'll upload more sometime.
May 28th, 2009, 01:40 AM
nice stuff man! Update!
May 28th, 2009, 06:16 AM
um haven't posted here in a while
just some studies of john singer sargent paintings.
learnt quite a lot.
May 28th, 2009, 11:28 PM
the Sargent studies look cool man!
May 29th, 2009, 11:20 PM
Cool dude....you should most definately keep posting more so we can see how quickly you're improving.
Started with some nice sketches, and now you're showing good painting skills, so do keep on sharing. The last one is looking sharp.
The landscape has some nice shapes, though I think you could have put a little more into the silhouette of that midground hill. Some highlights may be a little to white? nitpicks, good stuff!
May 29th, 2009, 11:31 PM
Thanks Jakers and Blackguy :)
O no i'm all for nitpicking, just tells me i always need to keep at it!
(and what i need to work on too)
May 30th, 2009, 02:17 AM
Keep up the hard work man its paying off. :yum:
May 30th, 2009, 02:35 AM
Wow your blog has some killer stuff on it. I'm loving how you handle backgrounds. Those sargent studies are awesome.
June 16th, 2009, 06:36 AM
Thanks Jason and OmertA!
heres a bougeureau study and some enviro sketches
dont think i got the placement of her features right. a tiny bit off.
and i think the original had more red in it. oh man bougeureau is amazing.
argh gotta practice more.
i'll prob paint the sketch sometime
June 26th, 2009, 06:59 AM
heres 1 done, gonna do the other ones
the buildings are abit bung, have to keep workin at it *_*
June 26th, 2009, 01:19 PM
Very nice work. Those studies are very nice. The perspecitve seems a little off. I understand that the building closest to us is askew but it seems to be just a tad off.
June 26th, 2009, 05:14 PM
i like the painting style alot, shiny shiny! warm and pleasent too look at. like the cliffs near the buildings furthest down, where they shift into purple, that area looks great, the paintlike strokes and the colors, very good! keep on painting! if i have to force out some sort of advice, it would be to experiment and try stuff you never have done at all, colorshemes that you don't feel safe with. well, good stuff!
June 26th, 2009, 10:30 PM
Jason Ross: Thanks! I totally agree with ya, can you tell I don't paint/draw buildings as much as i should! gotta practice more
gunnarsson: Thank you! I will try it out
July 17th, 2009, 02:46 AM
hmm abit new to robotic things
any advice will be appreciated!
July 17th, 2009, 03:39 AM
great style jeff! this sketchbook is lookin real nice so far
July 17th, 2009, 03:49 AM
Yea i agree to Jesus Food .... nice style ... nice ideas .. nice concepts :D
July 27th, 2009, 07:02 PM
Hi Jeff. Came across your blog the other day and I was really blown away. That led me here, and I felt obliged to tell you how impressed I am. I love drawings of trees, and this one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=529182&stc=1&d=1227827676) definitely takes the cake. I think this one (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_s7pxtVkOfjE/Sdnlj_3A0hI/AAAAAAAAAYo/XAudhMe9cao/s1600-h/enlightenmentjefflai.jpg) is also fantastic. Reminds me of the Great Deku Tree. Was that an inluence?! Anyway, really great stuff. Looking forward to seeing more from you!
August 2nd, 2009, 02:47 AM
Thanks Jesus Food, Strassenpenner08
Finn Diesel: Thanks for the kind words also,
I hadn't heard of the Great Deku Tree, (untill I just googled it before) but I can see what you mean :)
Speaking of trees.. heres somemore (and they're very suspicious of people entering of their forest)
(I really do like drawing trees, we have lots of them here in NZ haha)
Heres some doodles and robots
i'm kind of not very good at robots/ship type things..
because I don't draw them at all. (well attempting now)
not really sure about the functionality of them.
I think I need to study joints and mechanical things.
If anyone has any suggestions i'd be grateful!
August 2nd, 2009, 04:23 AM
killer sketchbook man, I love your lines and imagination. as for the bots, they're looking pretty good. for help with those, study loads of mechanical stuff (cranes, cars, whatever. go to the industrial area of town and draw anything that grabs your eye). also, studying the anatomy can help too, because essentially a lot of robot limbs slot together the same way that the joints of the human body do.
try and understand how your robots will move, what their movements will look like. it's the same with people and objects. if you understand why something happens (why the light looks like that, why the muscles tense when someone is in a certain position) it makes things lots easier. and fascinating! remember that it's always fascinating.
August 2nd, 2009, 04:48 AM
awesome sketchbook, i especially like the influence of lines in your work on the first page the tree and the guy's turban, and the tree faces( I think they are called ants).
August 2nd, 2009, 05:15 AM
great updates, Jeff.
those treefaces look amazing. creepy sometimes and not too obvious at first glance, which really adds to the mystic topic.
and I like the colors and rendering in this piece http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=707908&d=1246013916
hope you're still finishing off those other 2 sketches. :)
August 3rd, 2009, 01:32 AM
Nice doodles and polished robots thumbnails.
August 3rd, 2009, 01:52 AM
Marvelous book Jeff. Both your pencils and digis are real nice. It was a pleasure to visit.

August 25th, 2009, 08:51 AM

go giant tortise!
August 25th, 2009, 08:57 AM
The mountain face in the second painting there, wow...I really like the brushstrokes. The light/dark balance overall, really. Nice!
The drawing though looks really interesting, are you going to take it further? :) Love your sketches.
August 25th, 2009, 09:14 PM
um I might take it further when I have somemore free time
and heres another sketch just for fun, I don't think he needs any introduction :)
Be nice to the environment!
August 25th, 2009, 11:53 PM
Excellent work in here, yowza!
Those zombies are especially gruesome, love it! Giant tortoise is great too.
Solid work all around, keep it up.
August 29th, 2009, 10:02 AM

September 10th, 2009, 07:11 PM
Thanks sevarenge, hueyyeng, mike butkus and Raqsonu!
its all very kind of you
o! i'm also looking for work if anyones interested :)
*you're quite right hueyyeng, thanks for pointing the right direction
I've just started using painter! Its a lot of fun!
I even made a little story for the second one
A representative of the outsiders has come asking for help
(has only one guard to accompany him.)
The elder tree outright refuses, since they've been killing their people for thousands of years.
The forest dwellers also look on in disgust. D:
September 10th, 2009, 07:37 PM
Nice Painter work. :)
For the thumbs the first picture you attached will be used as a thumbnail for the thread. There is many thread on it over the support section I think.
September 10th, 2009, 08:06 PM
Amazing sketch book. Nice use of value and color!
September 13th, 2009, 12:01 AM
Thanks again hueyyeng and lolbbq!

September 13th, 2009, 01:41 AM
September 13th, 2009, 07:08 AM
Better and better every time I visit Jeff.
September 13th, 2009, 09:27 AM
September 18th, 2009, 12:19 AM
Thanks Bushido and AmbientChroma
Thats good to know Jigje! thanks for dropping by again :)
continuation of my other painting a few posts up
looking for work also!
Many of the forest spirits come out to see what all the commotion is about.
Here is their response to the outsiders proposal :)
I just changed my monitor settings!
I will go back and fix'em later
some are too dark and some are not enough contrast
September 18th, 2009, 09:25 AM
Lovely paintings. The contrast for the first pic seems lacking compare to the second pic.
I love how you use your strokes in the second pic to convey a sense of movement! :)
September 18th, 2009, 09:41 AM
Jefffffff, Awesome man I love your subtle colours :0 Could learn a lot from them :)
September 27th, 2009, 07:28 AM
Thanks again Huey Yeng and AmbientChroma!
im happy you can take something away from it :)
things from the sketchbook!
September 27th, 2009, 07:47 AM
Good stuff you've got in here! =D
I think painter suits your subtle style!
You should work on stronger contrasts in your works though.
Sometimes it's hard to capture your stories!
Continue kicking your butt, it pays off!
September 27th, 2009, 08:17 AM
Amazing art man. More more more!
September 27th, 2009, 08:25 AM
lovely mark making!
September 27th, 2009, 08:38 AM
Wow, super cool drawings and paintings!
Some of your pics, such as this one http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=788785&d=1254011906
would only be better if they were abit lighter. giving that light from behind the monster abit more punch wouldnt harm either in my opinion.
September 27th, 2009, 09:47 AM
Amazing stuff, especially the forest proposal paintings really spoke to me.
I also very much liked your robot studies. Great overall variety in here.
September 27th, 2009, 09:54 AM
pretty sweet stuff your drawings are very clean, and your shading is good aswell so keep it up dude :) hope to see more
September 27th, 2009, 10:03 AM

I like the cleaner lines it makes available

October 11th, 2009, 07:03 PM
Dang. Your sketches have a nice surreal feel to them. Normally I would say the colors are bit too muted, but I think you carry the mood of the drawing to paintings well.
October 17th, 2009, 07:24 AM
Thanks Pigeonkill, yea gettin pretty surreal lately haha
Nibru! man that thread is awesome.
October 17th, 2009, 08:17 AM
Nice pencil work. :) Nibru pose is sweeeet.
The spaceship sketch looks nice too.
October 17th, 2009, 02:00 PM

October 19th, 2009, 12:09 AM
Nikeybeats: Thanks! no I didn't do them all in one sitting! that was my first try at anything robotic, was over a period of days. haha just have to get obsessed with drawing to do it!
DDK248: wow! Daniel Dociu looking at my work O_o
quite the honour thank you so much!
Benjie: Thanks! yea i sometimes wonder how I can incorperate the texture, still testing and playin around.
October 19th, 2009, 12:54 AM

OmertA: Thanks!, I'm glad I could help :)
asa: Thank you!
Just somemore stuff :)
Here I was trying low dim light, just abit of an experiment. Though now looking at it more I think it could use some more to draw attention to the figures. This one was done in PS! I think I still like Painter more.
ArtFriend Scott Purdy has a book called 'Goblinoids!' so on this occasion I drew him a goblin :) more info --> link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Goblinoids-Paint-Goblins-Other-Creatures/dp/1600611826/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232713971&sr=1-12)
That second one is a Otyugh, Scott wanted to see my take on it! (wurm creature monster thing heres original --> link (http://scottpurdy.deviantart.com/art/Otyugh-Eyes-142565037))
November 9th, 2009, 06:27 PM
great energic sketches man , and your particular way to render them works pretty well, im sure they would lo0ok even better live, keep drawing and painting :)
November 9th, 2009, 11:50 PM
pure cool man !
November 10th, 2009, 04:06 AM
Hey man, still going strong I see. Great work, keep at it!
November 10th, 2009, 04:38 AM
Great stuff. I think your works gave me a hint of what I have to change in my way of sketching. Thanks for that XD
You seem to have mastered painter already. really nice use of colors and textures. Looks like real oil color.
November 10th, 2009, 05:01 AM
I really love this sketchbook! Both your drawings and digitals are great. And you've some really cool characters and designs. Skills + huge imagination = good combo. :)
Keep 'em coming!
November 10th, 2009, 09:55 AM
Nice character sketches, love to see a few of them colored :)
November 10th, 2009, 11:42 AM
Damn!! your pencils are simply stunning.....:rocker:
Also love the colors in the last moody one.
Would love to here about the process and material you use on your pencils.
November 10th, 2009, 12:04 PM
I like the fact you shade your doodles for the most part and render them out. The low dim study done in PS is well done but that lighting doesn't sit well with me. The light is like a purplish blue but it seems to be weaker than it should be if that makes sense. I have to look at it again, but it seems like you have another lighting source coming from the viewers perspective that allows for the different colors of the clothes and skin to show. I would want to see more shadow and more of that violet lighting, but I could be off.
November 13th, 2009, 07:27 AM
Thanks for commentin!
AR will get back to your sb's soon!
WhiteC: Thank you! Yes! I think they look abit nicer in person too :)
liam.c: AH thank you very much! means alot comin from someone as talented as you.

November 14th, 2009, 04:07 PM
Great pencil mileage :P Your paintings are looking great but I think you can add more depth to them. I feel in a lot of your pieces the different elements look as though theyre on the same plane.
November 15th, 2009, 12:03 PM

November 24th, 2009, 06:04 PM
I really liked their drawings and their creations!
remain so, congratulations!
November 25th, 2009, 05:39 AM
Your drawings and paintings blow my mind, really impressive work. Just out of curiosity: what tools/brushes you are using in Painter? You seem to have two main "styles":
1st one is thick oil paint like textured http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=775040&d=1252624171 and
2nd one soft and smooth http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=825391&d=1257803380.
First one is something i've wanted to do for long time so I'd be more than greaful if you could share a tip or two.
November 25th, 2009, 08:57 AM
You are magic with a pencil! i don't think my hand could steady itself enough to get the effect you get (which is great for lighting btw) even if i had your technical knowledge.
Just one question, what weight of pencil and paper (and size of paper) are most of your pencils done in? (I ask because you said the scanner doesn't do a good job of replicating)
Amazing work. Subscribed and 5 *'s
November 25th, 2009, 09:06 AM
very good stuff! your work lives! ... why asian people allways kicking ass in case of art?! :D is it a given talent or just the application of your nation? :)

ALEXANDRE da Vinci: Thank you!
Tmza: Thanks! hm lets see, the first pic you mentioned I used the dry clumpy impasto brush (can be abit hard to work with at times, but I do like its texture)
The second one I actually did in photoshop, just used a normal default brush
hopefully thats of some help!
BranFlakes: Thanks! just practice lots! i'm not even sure what type of paper i'm using, the stuff out of my A5 sketchbook, don't think its anything that special.
Lateman: Thanks! haha! well I dunno about that, it all just comes down to hard work I suppose.

just havin abit of fun makin up a story (continued from some previous pics)
This is Calathea, another one of the elder tree spirits.
She controls most of the Northern tropical borders of the forest
where she renews the boundaries to keep outside visitors out.
she has her spiritual minions to do her bidding
I was watching this documentary about Mongolia, and this family was going to perform a ritual. These monks also joined in.
'Mankind plunders the earth for her treasures, thus driving the spirits away. We pray to bring them back.'
I really liked this quote. Definitely workin that into the story.
these are doodles of some animal spirits that live in the forest.
Theres pockets of forest scattered at different areas and different climate zones. Elder tree spirits everywhere but in seclusion, where they protect them. Endangered they are!
January 30th, 2010, 11:54 AM
wow thats some quality you got here!
January 30th, 2010, 08:55 PM

April 29th, 2010, 07:55 AM

April 29th, 2010, 06:47 PM
Great SB you have going. A lot of really nice work. I especially like your bus sketches and the giant tiger chameleon piece. Unique painting style on that and some of your other paintings.
I have a suggestion. Try using the side of a standard wood pencil (or drafting-style leadholder if you don't like to sharpen) to shade sometimes. The smooth, even tone you get will really add an extra element of professionalism to your work. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :rendered:
May 8th, 2010, 01:37 AM
Chaser226: Thanks man!
soros: Thank you! will do :)

keep the good work coming
June 8th, 2010, 08:03 PM
Those dragons were tons of fun to glance though - and the very quick people studies feel perfect considering that people aren't still very long hey? Its good to see a range from the contour outlines, to the shaded drawings that follow.
The dwarf painting looks fun - i think the perspective on the axe is a little strange, and compositionally it cuts such a strong diagonal through the whole piece it might contribute to it feeling cramped. Interesting colors though with our off screen warm light :)
June 8th, 2010, 08:25 PM
Nie forms and shapes. Great action on the last one too. KEep it up.
June 8th, 2010, 08:27 PM
