and part 2

Not long ago Mr. Blonde was a CA member and SCAD student. Then he went to school at the Concept Art Atelier. Now he works at Massive Black while still attending to his classical foundations at the Atelier. Not bad for someone who can't yet legally drink. He's a friendly guy and a humble teacher; this download demonstrates why he deserves all the success he's got coming his way. Hope you enjoy it! As usual, let us know your thoughts.

*Special thanks to Jonah who joined our team and did the bulk of the editing on this one.

"In this download, concept artist Whit Brachna explains how to break down and create an environment one step at a time. Going from thumbnails to a simple 3D model to a final Photoshop render, Whit constructs a unique and detailed piece with ease and creative ingenuity. As he does so, the viewer will witness a display of foundation skills and Photoshop wizardy combined to create an interior environment suitable for industry-level production. .psd, .mov, and several .jpgs included."

ps. No 3D modeling is covered.

Nice thumbnails. I think my favorite part of the finished piece is actually the lights hanging from the ceiling, just the way they're painted. Thats what I love about Whit's stuff, every little object or inch of the painting is interesting by itself and fun to check out. Probably comes from all that abstract stuff he used to do. I would have made those lights really friggen boring looking.

I've tried painting over a 3D model ummm... once. And was put off by not being able to get rid of the 3D feel. I'll have to give it another go.

For part to, I keep getting a 500 error. It downloads well for a long time, stops, I click resume and it starts from scratch. Lather, rinse, repeat. I'm using Mozilla's Down Them All add on and downloaded the first one with no problems.

EDIT: Errrr... happened twice again. It gets to 98% before completely crapping out on me.
EDIT 2: Finally worked. Sorry, but I don't know what would of caused the problem repeatedly.

You know, I haven't touched Photo Shop since I started watching these videos. I haven't looked at painter either, and have barely touched Z Brush, but this video, for some reason, got me to really start on Sketch Up. How do you get lighting to work in that program anyway?

Its cool watching his process for thumbnails as well. My thumbnails are usually more like elaborate gestures. I'm proud of the movement I can instill in them, but they often lack depth. Composition is hit or miss, but Mr Blonde seems to have the same problem. Anyway, he uses these really simple shapes, that work really well in SketchUp.

It'd be a big bonus if you had included the perspective brush and some of the other custom brushes too. Also, Rembrandt made hundreds of self portraits, so I'm highly curious as to which one he is referring to.

wow thanks for this dude. very nice vids. Love the thumb nails part the most from the first one. you have a nice process going on there. Think i'll have a go at environments too.

Keep em comin MB. the vids are really cool and informative.

It's already a week later after posting part 2, but you still haven't updated Mr Blonde's section over at the http://dvd.massiveblack.com/downloads.html with a Buy Part Two button. I just purchased all the vids, except that part two... because of the lack of that info/button in that site. If I didn't bother to check this forum, maybe I wouldn't have even known that part 2 was already available. Guess I'll buy it tomorrow (after downloading the rest of the vids), but i think you should take care in putting that little button there, for the sake of those who don't use the forums as much.

:yayca: eitherway, thanks MB for making these videos available! I'll be looking forward to watching them.

I'm pretty curious as to where the Dean Cornwell generic composition panels can be found. I've done some pretty quick searches but turned up nothing. Anyhoo, great vid, very inspiring and of all the MB videos I've seen (all of them except the Petey Konig DVD) I think this one actually taught me the most.

I think he confuse him with Wally Wood:

This looks really really cool. I think I may just have to get a copy of this one. I wonder what the 3D program of choice is for this production. Awesome job Mr. Blonde!

Ok, couldn't resist this one since I've been trying to improve my environments. Just watched part one, and will get part two later. Some pretty good info in there, and I would recommend this to anyone thinking about purchasing it.

I'll have to watch the part where he lays in the different images from sketchup though, there was a lot going in that section!

Ok, I got a question. What are the system specs for the computer that Whit is using? He gets up close to 500mb on his file size, and doesn't seem to have any problem with it slowing down.

I'm still buzzing off the fact he was using Sketchup. Probably the most useful tutorial I have ever seen.

Damn! Whit...you have some mad skill. I really enjoyed seeing the process in these two videos. Just like Coro's, it is refreshing to see 3d modeling come into play as well. The various techniques that were used were extremely informative. It is awesome seeing an environment tutorial as well. I hope there are more environment based tutorials to come! Characters are awesome too but I think sometimes environments are neglected when it comes to concept tutorial dvds so keep it up!!! Awesome!

Nice tutorial, Whit! I learned a lot... I've been playing around with sketchup myself, but I haven't applied it that effectively! Inspiring stuff, and I picked up a couple of cool tricks! Thanks man! I'll definitely recommend it to people!

I'd like to thank Whit, this tutorial has literally changed my life. I don't have any formal training in 3D modeling, but from what I learned, a simple program like Sketchup, can provide everything a 2D artist may need.

all credit goes to m@ for that perspective brush... it's the most brilliant and awesome idea ever.... and it has saved me hours of time and bundles of energy

thanks to everyone who posted kind words.. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I wasn't sure if anybody was gonna benefit from this... glad to know it wasn't a waste of effort!

jfwalls: my computer is nothing special... i don't really know the specs, but as soon as i go above 4000-5000 pixels on the long side it starts to go unbearably slow... I actually need a better computer for some of the higher rez stuff i've been working on

Lege1 hey man, I use sketchup and only sketchup for 3d work! i want to learn to render in 3dsmax though... or maybe some other rendering program

davi: cheers to sketchup!

romance thanks lover, i'm gonna watch you sleep tonight

Zaxser lighting is a tricky process in sketchup... you cannot add a lightsource in a scene, you have to use this "time of day" lighting thing to try and get what you want... to be quite honest... learning how to light in a program like 3dsmax is probably more beneficial and would yield a better result...

as for the perspective brush, it is already available online in m@'s exclusive sketchbook here on conceptart... all credit goes to him for that stroke of brilliance

the self portrait by rembrandt that I'm talking about is in the getty museum in LA... i've attached a crappy jpeg of it that does it no justice.

Unbreakable thanks mate! see ya tomorrow! :)

steak-pronz: hey man! you can't save padme cuz i've got the higher ground... don't try it!

Jedmo> i want your beard inside me.

idiot_apathy, you mean the guy who beat me in the lms? :P

shamagim: thanks man, cheers

Artworkguy, Dose206: hey! I haven't seen the full final-edit of the video (i can't stand the sound of my voice..) but I wasn't confusing dean cornwell with wally wood... i actually just forgot wally wood's name... maybe it was unclear in the final edit.

anyway, I was trying to make a connection between the "3 stage" panel of wally woods 22 panels that always work... and the work of dean cornwell... here is an example:
