yeah, like if i want to use it. i click on the shortcut to run the program.
it doesn't load the program and gets stuck at the splash image and then just quits and tells me if i want to report or relaunch.
i'm using a macbook pro with leopard osx.
anyone know if there might be a fix for it?
any help would be appreaciated.

Basic troubleshooting:
1. Restart your computer. I assume you've already done this, but it never hurts to ask.
if that doesn't work
2. Run Disk Utility and repair any problems it finds (You'll have to boot from a CD or external drive to repair your startup disk).
if that doesn't work
3. Trash your Painter prefs file.
if that doesn't work
4. Reinstall Painter.

When starting Painter, hold down the Shift key. What that does is load the default settings for Painter. Be sure and back up any extra brushes before doing this!

ok, i've tried everything there is.
reinstalled it, still wouldn't work. could it be something within my computer settings or something?

There was a similar problem with a PC and Internet explorer and the splashscreen. If you have a rif file, double click on that and see if painter will open. It will bypass the splash screen. I know absolutely nothing about macs, but this may be worth a try. If that does work, you can trash the splash screen. I don't remember how, but I'm sure someone else will remember. Also, check that you have the latest patch to Painter. You should have PainterX.1

hmm tried opening one of my Rif files, didn't work.
even if i got the latest patch, which i did.
even tried re-installing it.
do you think it's the new leopard version of osx being the problem?
my scanner won't work because it's not supported by leopard and i've heard alot of other compatability problems by other people with many other things.
but painter was working just fine before and it just started doing this. i don't remember anything i could have done that could cause this.
i'm totally losing it , an exspensive program that i really need to use and it just fails all of a sudden.

I don't have a solution for you, but I do "feel your pain," as they say. When I upgraded from a Mac PPC G4 to an Intel Mac Pro, I lost Painter 7 and I'm still sick over that. I love Painter 7's interface and would stay with it forever if I could.
I've decided to stay with OS 10.4.10 (Tiger) for now until the kinks are worked out in 10.5 Leopard. I'm just reading too many horror stories about Leopard - and Microsoft Vista, too.
More speed and advances in computer technology are great, but I sometimes wish they would just say, "We've gone as far as we can and there will be no more upgrades to anything." We'd lose a lot I'm sure, but it would make life a lot less complicated.
Call me an ""old fogey" (http://blog.jtimothyking.com/2007/08/22/you-know-youre-an-old-fogey-software-engineer-when#more-153)" or a pessimist (http://thinkexist.com/quotes/with/keyword/pessimist/) if you like, but when you spend a ton of money on new stuff and it breaks something that was fixed, it upsets me.

well i got it working again, i missed one of th options elwell suggested about the prefs file. apparently that's what made it screw up. after that i reinstalled it and ran the latest update it runs much better now.
THANKS!
