Hi - i just found this site a few days ago through Bobo's site, but i've been enthralled and inspired ever since - this is a really amazing community, and i'm literally in awe of half the artists here - well, that's not true - more like 95% really :) anyways, i have never had any formal training of any kind (except for art class in 7th grade) but have tried really hard to self-teach my..self (too many selfs!) to draw/paint, and made really what i would call mediocre progress. Most of my art has been limited to pencil and pen sketches, so a la Andrew Jones i've decided to try and do a new and different piece of art every single day, even if i only have 15 minutes to do it - at first i'm going to work mostly with the male torso, i think, but the series may sort of include other things eventually...anyways, this is what i made in between research papers this afternoon in about 15 minutes...i'm really excited about it, except i went a little wild on the white highlights on some of the edges...also, when i was neatening up the edges of the figure i missed some spots, so on those nice high-contrast mac monitors this pic might look slightly odd (though on a normal shitty pc monitor it looks like hot stuff :)) I made the pic in PS 6.0 using just a Wacom graphire pad and 5 colors (white, black, red, blue, and a fleshtone) - i primarily used just a paintbrush on about 4-8%, and i used some dodge/burn just a little to touch up. If anyone has any hints about how to get a more...'painty' result i'd love to hear some advice!!! Ok enough ranting - i'll try and post something every day here barring any kind of catastrophes. Thanks for making a forum like this available!!!

Adam, you should definitely check out MindCandyMan's "Journey of an Absolute Rookie" thread. He's teaching himself from scratch. There's a lot for everyone to learn from his efforts.

Check it out. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=870)

I like the colors in this piece. Get yourself some reference and really work on how bones and muscles interact. It'll help you tighten up the forms in a convincing way.

To painter things up in Photoshop, that's a challenge. But there are some guys here doing some amazing things with it!

I'm personally resigned to the fact that I'll never do a painterly looking piece on a computer (cos I NEED photoshop, and haven't got the cash for Painter 7..yet), check Scott RObertson's thread for a little pick me up. :)

But if you really go for that traditional look, there's always that *other* program.
