I threw these together in about 15 minutes just as an attempt to vary the way I draw faces. Then a friend of mine looks over my shoulder and says "Hey, that dude looks pretty gay." My intention was for it to be a female. So, my question for you is, does it in fact look masculine and if so what can I do to change that? Thanks for any help you can give.

yeah it does look like a very feminine male.
jaw is too sharp
eyebrow too thick?

when I look at the neck, I do feel that it is a feminine face,

actually the more i look at the first one it looks more like a girl.
but the second one is the inbetweener.
It's jaw is to angular,
but I think the chin is too big.
I don't know if that's what you want it to look like, but that's what I cansee.

The adam's apple is as much of a givaway in art as it is in real life;).

Thanks guys.
Joshua-I really wasn't going for any specific look, this isn't based on a real person or anything. I kind of worried the jaw was too angular. I'll look out for that and the size of my eyebrows in the future.
Elwell-The adam's apple, eh? I've been told that women have an adam's apple too, it's just not as pronounced. I guess I'll just avoid it entirely in the future to be safe.
I appreciate the help, both of you.

hey all.. just wanted to throw my two cents in...
I think it appears to be more masculine because of the strong lines used in the jaw area... especially in the first one... I generally think that thick lines on the jaw make a person appear more masculine rather than femanine. Yeah... thinner lines, smoother shapes, less jagged angles and no adam's apple... LOL but I do like the graphic style you used....

Cheers!

Well because of your style its not too hard to make some simple alterations.
Thin the eyebrows
The chin is square and masculine, thin it, round it and shorten it, it juts out.. a male trait
You could make the nose smaller and where it meets the brow have it not so level, drop the height where it meets the bridge
At the moment you have a hard angle for the back of the jaw bone.. it comes down from the ear and then changed at quite an acute angle. I would shave that significantly, especially on the lower pic, thats what really gives it a guy appearance.

Lower pic:
On the outer edge of the face you have some strong curves going on, the brow, then the prominent cheekbones, the curvature for the mouth and lastly the large chin. They are situated nicely, though too emphasized for a female face. The edge of chin from that angle could actually rest inwards of the mouth.

BUT: This is merely my opinion, others my disagree and more imortantly I wouldnt want you to change things so much it was no longer your work.(which is really good)
However just looking at your style I can pretty my see what you would want your females to look like, plus I think you'd end up with what Im envisioning eventually anyway.

Great stuff, Im really curious to see what happens!
:D

dyoung-Yeah, the consensus seems to be that the jaw is the main issue. I'm definitely making a mental note about using a softer approach in the future. Thanks for your input!

Lukias-In all honesty, that is the most thorough and constructive feedback I've yet to receive since joining ConceptArt (with no offense intended to others who have offered their assistance as well). I will certainly take what you've said to heart. You have my deepest grattitude for the time and effort you put into helping me out.

Thank you all! :ahha:
