An art movement is a euphemism for tearing your bad art up and flushing it down the crapper. An art period is how you know your art is done. if it's got a comma, it's not finished yet.

Read kev's link there. The difference between movement and period is most apparent in Modernism, which can be considered a single art period that includes many different art movements.

My personal definition of them.

Movement: Refers to the style in which the painting is done.

Period: Refers to the time, context(social issues, cultural stuff) that it was painted in.

ie. Mona Lisa, Leonardo DaVinci. Renassiance Art which I believe was early 16th century oil painting. A big part of the Renaissance movement was something called Chiascuro(basically shading to create rounded forms).

Le Moulin de la Galette, Renoir. Oil painting. Late 18th C. Movement was impressionist and the period was Modern. I think the reason it's said to be modern period is because technology was really beginning to make a difference in peoples lives at this point.

One other thing to note about this movement is that it was(in part) influenced by the new creation of *gasp* paint tubes! Artists could now paint outdoors easily.

This becomes too much of a simplification: Movement much rather refers to the (often philosophical) ideas and goals behind the works of art - often the more intellectual and academic side of things. Most philosophies make for a fairly logical application, but some - such as Dada - do not.

Haha Steph. As I was reading the thread I was trying to think how to make the same joke. You did it way more adorably than I would've.
