Hello everyone. I'm not going to bother boring you with words. Just have fun looking. :)

Edit: So, after a year or so with that utterly boring, pompous and uninformative intro, I've decided to actually say something.

Hello, I am a 17 year old Canadian girl. I had lurked on CA for way, way, way too long without becoming a member, sadly enough, though this has been rectified as you can see. I'm planning on going into something at least vaguely art related whether it be illustration, architecture, industrial design or something else. Crits and advice are always welcome!

A cup (plus bad background) , some ears, and a quickie of a character named Sir Goremont. I'm still having issues getting anything I do on the computer to get into focus. Any advice would be welcome.

Finally the promised colour! :)
A random fairytale sort of thing (random title).
A beginning for the comet rider COW before I remember that a comet was ice etc. and not rock. The idea was that the comet rider ate the minerals and metals in the rock until it ate through it. It was also allergic to oxygen because all of the metals in it would oxidize it to dust.
30 minute speed paint from ref.
IDOW Power boots: Ruby Slippers! This wasn't really an industrial design but I really liked it. I eventually made a really good sequin brush for this which is now forever lost somewhere in my computer.

I really like the glass (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=314200&stc=1&d=1204281374) and the landscape (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=317015&d=1204576418) in the last post.

At this stage you just need to work more and post more - the rest of the stuff is fairly unrefined. Scanning your stuff with higher contrast will help a lot too - or increasing the contrast after you scan.

Keep posting and don't give up because people here don't reply, they're too busy checking out the 5* threads :)

EEK! No posts for a month. Anyway, here is an absolutely huge dump to make up. I'd love some crits. Please..... :P

1 Coconut crusher COW
2 Horsies! There was originally a person on the black one but I removed his existance
3 Quickies hands. These are only about 2 cm high each so I'm quite happy with them
4 Practicing perspective without guidelines on imaginary chairs
5 Enviro practice
6 Random doodles I liked
7 Bleh enviro
8 This is from that Steampunk Prof, Penguin Chow. I never finished it but I'm thing of it now
9 Apple harvester from IDW. The trees suck, but I really got attached to the concept.

I also did some watercolor studies that I actually like of (like 2 hours each) but I need to find a camera to take some pics. I think I overworked them but I want to get them up here for some crits.

You've got some real nice work here! It's a good start. I think though, that you could benefit from some brush/pencil stroke economy-- try to do more with each brush or pencil stroke. Right now you have a lot of little marks happening, which can muddy things up when you're painting and/or make things look really "hesitant". There's a great Prometheus tutorial that deals with, well, everything, but there's a good section on economy in there... here's the link:

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm

Keep it up! And thanks for dropping by my sketchbook! :)

Evil Bunny: Thanks. I plan on doing just as you say.
Ridz: In terms of time issues, its getting the extra 5% that takes the work.
Ookchk: Thanks for the link. And you're welcome. I've been trying some marker stuff to try and help with the whole extra lines stuff, but I've been having issues which probably means that it's something that I should work on. :) You can probably see the same thing in the splochiness of the watercolours below.

Here's the watercolours.
Self crits: Splotchy. The bottle is really flat. I think I spent more time looking at the wrinkles through the cloth than actually looking at the bottle. I really, really don't like watercolours.

Big dump this time. An assignment at school was to write a kids book in french and illustrate, so here are about two thirds of what I have to do so. Hopefully I will have enough time to do some colour and make some other fixes. Also some enviro studies, Mouse House EOW and some random stuffs.

Well, I ended up cutting out a lot of the images for the book, so here are most of the ones that did get in it. There was a black hole too, but it was scribbles put into liquify filter....fun though :) I also got around to doing some mini-studies in pencil. The deer skull in the other has been slowly flaking apart and bing eaten by mice on by porch so it now. Also some sketches for DEEP, not really going to do anything though.

Here's some stuffs. I haven't really spent any tume before now with pen or marker so most of this (incl the anatomy) is just experimenting. Hopefully it will help with the whole line economy thing. I have so many pages of things like the teapots, but I have decided to spare the eyes of CA. I have a real issue with going over things over, and over and over again even if they don't need it... bleh. I have so many excessive lines everywhere in the anatomy... But I really like flowers: no one can tell if you messed them up. :P

I've had issues with colour conversion from PSD to JPG. (just look at the one above for an example) If anyone has a solution pleassssse help me! :$ To get this I had to take a screenshot and do some other fooling around. The colour is so much more dull... oh well.

hey there pixie. great detail still lives there; and good studies as well. notice you like drawing horses. a great thing to do is observe them with a marker and some cheap-ass paper; and just draw what you see. you're gonna end up with a line for the back and 2 for a leg, and then start on a new one within a minute. it give great speed practice as well as make you feel their dynamic lines. uhm. dont really think its right to link to my own stuff in other's threads, but I mean like this:

Nice studies! You really seem to improve a lot with them. And as bbwolf says, the chess pieces are great!
So you're doing pretty well, and you are handling nature and landscapes very good. I would like to see you do even more studies on human anatomy, though.
Keep up the good work!

Pixie Trick
December 29th, 2008, 02:34 PM
bbwolf: Thanks. I couldn't think of anything imaginative really so I went with what I knew. :)

Mokinzi: Thanks. I have mixed thought about humans. I like to draw/paint etc things. As far as I'm concerned people are things, and personally, I'm not too much more interested in people than a really cool seashell, or a rabbit. This said, it really doesn't compare because other people are very interested in other people... mmmm just some rambling thoughts. I like anatomy a lot as I like to see how things work, however, the only books I have are medical ones, and they're not the greatest. You should see the amazing works by the illustrator in Grey's Anatomy. I think the guy deserves an award.

So here's some various sketches for the ___of the weeks. I finally figured out why the computer wasn't liking my camera card. Sorry for the bad quality.

So here's something that came out of avoiding studying and somewhat fits the current IDW. And I looove the dragon harness design sheets. Very creative.
Any thoughts behind that you´d like to share?

Pixie Trick
February 8th, 2009, 01:27 PM
Hive_minD: Thanks.

bbwolf: Ok. Well, here's more of a run through, but hopefully it'll tell you what you wanted to know.

1) I decided that since the point was the harness, there was no reason to get overly fancy with the dragon itself, so I painted myself a fairly bland dragon in a couple minutes. If I did decide to get fancy, I could always just adjust the proportions of the design.

587272

2) So then I just duplicated said dragon a couple of times, and lowered the opacity of the layer. Then the fun part was dredging up random ideas. Originally I had an idea in mind, but I ended up ditching it. I think a large part of the process is running out of 'cool' ideas and actually having to think about it. :D I ended up picking 1b which was a combo of a couple of designs from the previous sheet.

587274

3) A rough up of the design, and possible saddles and buckles etc.

587277

4) The final.

I was realizing while doing the bridgeman stuff, that it really wasn't making any sense to me, mainly because I wasn't getting what the blocks he had were representing, and it was irritating me. So I decided to get some more medical texts and straighten out what goes where etc. These are from "Human Function and Structure" Some of the proportions are ridiculously off, and lopsided, etc but it's all getting sorted out in my head. I also tried flipping the images in my head to get both sides, and it worked with variations of success. More is coming. (oops, the last page is upside down, but you get the idea)

An IDW Baba Yaga's house thing I have many, many complaints about. If you actually want to see the complaints, pop over to the wip thread for IDW. And a self portrait and eyes, and noses, and mouths. Wearing glasses sucks because either a) it distorts everything, b) you can't see when you angle your face away enough to get profile-ish, and c) getting hit in the face really, really hurts when it happens. And some hands, I decided to do some very gentle playing with in PS. Faux chalk. I've noticed everything on the right side of anything I do tends to be higher and I'm trying to fix that by just being conscious of it, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

On another note, in art class, were doing history which means that when I have to do little thumbs of old artworks, I get to make Jesus look however as I like. I laugh and laugh and laugh until the people next to me start moving away slowly. Fun. :sungod: That and I think Mary and the saints were drawn after aliens because their fingers are so boneless and long. Actually, if you look at Egyptian stuff they have the same thing going on. It's a conspiracy!!!!! The mother ship is coming!!!!! Run......... *ahem* .....well.

Soooooo, I'm off to France again on the 22nd so two and a half week no update for a while. Meh. It will be better as my partner this time seems really nice. I did some more foots and hands and bones and stuffs. I seemed to be in a happy place for drawing for like three days, and then yesterday, I tried to draw any thing properly, and I came out like mush. It made me sad. :( The feet above in pen, I was actually seeing the random bumps that Bridgeman has, and was getting that is was all a matter of accentuation of minuscule bumps and ridges and things, and then its like boom and nothing's working in my head and hand and the connection's gone. Ahhhhhhh..... Ohh, and I just noticed I've actually been updating semi decently. Weird. Anyways, If you can actually make out which body part goes where, and if it actually is a body part you get a prize. Actually, you don't but you get the idea. Sorry for bad photos.

My IDW final. I can't spend any more time on this. I've got to pack!!!!

Herre's the write up.
This is a set of eating-ware that is made for the first interplanetary travelers from Earth. It is made of stainless steel to be easily sterilized without precious water. This set has an integrated gravitational unit in each of the pieces in order to keep the food from flying off your plate in space and on low g. planets. The units can be switched off to save power, and the cutlery (knives, forks and spoon, or spoon and chopsticks) clip into the holders on either side of the plate in this situation. (The knobs on the ends keep them from slipping out.) The cup can be clipped onto the plate so it can be let go of while eating, has a lid with attached straw that keeps liquids from being knocked out. When the cutlery is clipped in, cup attached and power off, the whole set can be attached to a belt and moved as one piece.

The closeup is a view from the bottom of the plate showing some of the mech, and tech, and a miniature of the same is what is used with the cup. All cutlery have smaller units in the handles.

And the pic.

Sorkness: Thanks. I really do hope the crits made sense. I loved that village too. My family just shook their heads and tip toed around it. :P Studies are lots of fun too. I find them really relaxing.

So, I'm back from the trip. Went to the Louvre, and only had two hours, so I got to the Byzantine period, realized I had used and hour already, and rushed through the rest. It was literally painful to walk past and not look. I fell in love with these really cool rolly beads. They were like rolling stamps.... anywhooo.

I didn't do too much drawing, but here's what I did get done that was semi-decent. The bus was pink on the inside, and got Christened the love bug/shagg wagon. Fun times.

The whole dark next to light = looks darker than it is, thing going on I think. You've got some funky designs here, and perspective too, like it! It's fun to look at, and its nice to kick back from the busy.ness

I have some suggestion for lighting, although this is supposed to be colour study. I've made a few quick tweaks as suggestions. Increased the Levels & Brightness Contrast* on some areas to push the lighting. What you could do is switch between black and white / colour when you paint digital, may help significantly. Keep it up.

strings: Ummm, I ment the image was getting busy from all the things I kept on adding to it, but it's true that it was fun to just have fun with it. (...and how is this a colour study? I think it's the most balant usage of every candy related colour on Earth, sadly enough. :P) Thank you for the compliment. Also, thanks a ton for spending the time to try figure out what I'm doing wrong. I kept the highest contrast in tone in one object to the tripod to help keep it as the focus, and it was a bit on purpose keeping the rest rather toned down. A lot of this was figuring out why I had done something in the original sketch, and how this worked compositionally. I think where you placed the house's shadow may be a tad off. I will admit that I placed my shadows by eye, but for all the light came from behind the viewer, and not from behind the house.

ashess: Thanks. I do have issues with planes, but I have no idea what sort of things I can do to remedy this situation. I get the idea, but I have no idea how to translate that to an image.

MrSmith: That's something that's always nice to hear.

Actually, on that note, I looked through some of my old sbs, and took some pics. These are from 2006, when I was thirteen. I find it neat that I can look at something I drew three years ago and remember the moment exactly. Better than a photo. I do find it sad to see how little I've progressed. I love the tree one more now than when I made it. Look at the detail! It feels like another person did draw it.

631120

I've signed myself up for the CHOW The final Dr. Who (how could I not with my avatar?) so that's the next week's project. The last CHOW I did was a year ago (and believe me it was hideous) so I'm a bit apprehensive. Thank god it's a two week time limit and not one. Eeeek!

Pixie Trick
March 30th, 2009, 06:33 PM
So I have nothing in colour, and nothing to show for the CHOW yet, but I have most of the junk from class for last week. I did a portrait of my Dad that actually shows a resemblance which is nice. So anatomy stuff. Actually the page of only feet is from memory except for the bad looking one which was from life. Weird. Anywhooo, massive dump of sketchies. The page with the grid is horrible I know. We got the muscles for each appendage separately, and I had to piece it together in my head, so It got kind of out of whack, so I stuck a bucket on him. Currently we are drawing our teacher so that'll be showing up soon. Another current project is a mosaic, done in little, tiny pieces of paper. It's horrible to do and to see.

wow!!!! you've got an awesome mix of creative sketches and studies from life and anatomy here!

You're surprisingly dedicated for someone so young! That's a rare talent, so keep it up! If you can get your hands on "Scott Robertson's Rendering Matte Surfaces".. i think it could help you get more realistic lighting into your creative sketches!

Keep it up Pixie Trick!

knoxie: Thanks. And thank you for the suggestion. I'll have to see if I can get a copy. A bit out of my personal price range, but what else are birthdays and chistmas for?

Actually, that reminds me, I had a teacher who used to be a uni prof in China when I was between eight and ten, and for two years we did 30min-2hour still lifes of white cubes and spheres, and finally fake fruit and cups and stuff. After that we finally got to use oil pastels to do the same. It was the most boring thing on earth after a while, especially when you're eight, but I think she tried to teach me the most out of any art teacher I had since. She also had us (my brother and I, he was only seven-ish) adjust all the pictures in her house to be perfectly level, and to find the exact centre of a sheet of paper without measuring. She also used to tell us how she used to be in a class of fifty girls, and one eraser. I miss her.

strings: This is for you. There's probably one or two of these spread out somewhere in this sb. This is fun, but you arm gets numb after five minutes or so. Elbows look so cool from this angle! I love how the perspective gets all funny when your shoulder is only a couple of inches away. I think it would be fun to do a drawing all the way up to your nose (or however hgh you can see) of your own body. The only problem is that you kep on shifting without noticing and things start to look really weird really fast.

Heya Pixie Trick

Very nice studies again. Imho you´re best when you do studies. Also shows that you´ll be quiet good if you´ll keep practising. Glad you had a good teacher, albeit a boring one from time to time, who showed you the importance on studies and introduced you to stuff like the drawing of white cubes and stuff. Sometimes I wish I had the opportunity to go to art school. Any art school. *meh* I did okay by myself long enough and then there was internet and conceptart. :yayca:

Keep it up. cya ´round.

That's mind bending, I've gotta try that drawing exercise.

Pixie Trick

bbworlf: I know that my studies and real life are the best. Basicly they're just copying. I don't go to art school. Any art education I have is from that one woman (once a week in her basement), various week long, once a summer, kid's art courses at the local community college (pottery mainly, only one year drawing), various jewellery courses (actually, I started silversmithing last summer, but I never have time for it now), one pysanky course, and highschool art class.

Strings: Try it. It's fun! :D It's not all that different than just looking down at your foot and drawing it, but just at a much weirder angle. Have you ever gone on your stomach and looked at how your kitchen table + chairs looks from underneath or down low? (okay, stupid question) It's the same thing as the top, just a bit less ordinary.

Here's a portion of what's been keeping me busy for the last week. This hideous thing took about twenty hours all told. It's about 10 inches by 8 inches. It took foreeeeever to do and I'm not overly fond of it. I got lazier for the last two hours or so. The first photo is colour adjusted, but the second is on. After that is a portrait from a photo of my grandmother and I. I think I looked adopted when I was young. I know her eyes are too far apart but it was ten at night alright! More to come, but I haven't photographed much of it.

Actually, I got the suggestion to set up as a portrait drawer downtown at the farmer's market in the summer and do some drawing there. I may just do that.

Thank you Mokinzi.

Long time, no post. I had an indecisive week or two where I couldn't figure out if I wanted to do something enough to start.

A three week old portrait of my dear dad (20min or so as he would only sit still for the end of the show he was watching) Sketchies for sculpture in class: I started the first gown lady, only to have her fall in half, get a tear in the clay going halfway across the skirts and generally be miserable on the fifth day. I'm doing the rag girl now. She seemed the most structurally sound, although I'm having problems with her cloak. Wip for six legged steed for cow.

Hi Pixie Trick, nice sketchbook! Good that you try many different media. I really like the ideas for the chessmen. The digital stillive is good, but the very inhomogeneous holes in the dipper (the big spoon?) are a bit disturbing. Are you going to post photos of the caly stuff you do? - that would be great!

Pixie Trick

UnidColor: Nice to 'see' ya! My brother can just suck it up, though next time I think I'll do something smaller, but more refined.

engelhardt: It's nice to know what you like. I've been thinking about which things I've done that people like, and trying to make a connection, but there doesn't seem to be much of one. The list is something like: chess pieces, collage/mosaic, time machine, studies. Studies I can see why more so, but other than that, I have no clue!?!? Frustrating because the ones I like, on one else seems to. Weird. I don't do a whole lot of clay work, but I've taken a course or two. I have one statue that I mentioned to you in your sb, and is mentioned earlier in this threat, but it is currently on display with my life drawing of my teacher. And what do you mean about the holes being 'homogeneous' and 'disturbing'? They're in the wrong spots perhaps? If you could clarify that'd be great.

Mehhh...some stuff. I really haven't gotten much done, and I'm feeling rather burnt out for no apparent reason. I just don't feel like doing anything. Here's some week or two old stuff. Porous exo-skeleton final and garden shears from multiple angles.

Here's what I spent a wonderful, marvelous, absolutely charming hour doing. Everyone else had bought out of class to watch the girls rugby game (I hear one got sent to the hospital with a broken collarbone), I decided I'd do some french work. This turned up instead. Actually a friend of mine drew a dragon across the same length of board and it was up there for three weeks in April. The only truly random thing is the cheese. Everything else is either connected (at least in my mind) or has some purpose. I love doing things like this. Puns, inside of randomness, inside of puns. FUNNNNNN!!!!! Thanks quackart. I love that little guy too. No one expects him to do anything, but he moves!

Selkie for teen challenge. I'm trying to keep away from naked lady coming out of skin, as that seems to be what everyone else is doing. Going more for the symbolic view. She was caught (the net), and is trapped in the human world (closed window and in a house), while she can't find her skin (I know it's right there, but the idea is that it is being kept 'over her head'). I'll probably add some water on the bench where she's come back from standing in the water. I'm not sure if I should have the skin chained or caged or something. I don't want to add any more strait lines into the mix, so I think cage is out. Also, I want the dress to be white, or at least light coloured, and I'm afraid of making is blend with the skin. Ahhhhh..... Crits as always are very welcome.

engelhardt: The overpaint is perfectly alright.

Here's a picture of the actual spoon. It's curved so the dots wouldn't be in a grid shape like you have shown. They have to change position and shape to match how they warp because of the perspective going on. Thanks.

Some really random and un-connected stuff this post..... An acrylic 30 min paint that got ps adjusted so it looks funny + overworking of shadow. About 4x6. A continuation of the cowgirl thing (I'm not sure about the moon in the corner... opinions anyone?), and the tentative first four pages of a kids book. The moral will be "Worry gives all things a bigger shadow", of something to that effect. Basically, she's worried that there's ghosts etc, and therefore she sees all sorts of scary shadows. She then goes back and sees that they were all ordinary things. I'm trying to keep the pages to half and hour each.

Strings: Thanks so much. It means a lot coming from such a great storyboarder. The continuity in this case had as much to do with time constraints than anything. Find something that works and stick with it. Hugs to you. In a non weird way... if possible.

Anywhoooo, 'tis exam time once again, and most of this is stress reliever hence some really creepyness (The dude I love you guy in a tutu was inspired by a sprite + w.o.w. ad... sleeeeeep :P). I need to do some more pen or something 'cause my strokes are reverting to scribbly right to left. Actually, I'm not using it, so I'm losing it, it seems like. Meh I'm still working on the space cowgirl thing. It's now on an approx 12.2x16.3 board (or some horrible numbers like that) that required transfer by grid + calculation of squares. The cow is all white, so it's a lesson in making something white look not flat. Add to that it's done with only black, white, and the primaries it's a bit difficult. Fun, but difficult. We shall see...

HUGS! You're too kind  and again kudos to you for finishing those panels.

Love the new WIP, although I'd have to say the two pieces of wood in the air seems to be placed awkwardly for me. Maybe it's because it forms an X and it destroys the rhythm of the composition. Well, since it's still in progress and maybe it will work out when you add few more floating debris. I also think you can push to make the composition a lot more dynamic. Just by tilting the image, as film makers would call it the dutch tilt. I don't know if that even made any difference but keep going, it's kickin' ass! :uzi:

Thanks for your feedback on my sketchbook, that clarified a lot of things. You singled out that one fish, made me lol.

Yeah, I also forgot to mention that canted/tilt shots work best on a panoramic frame. It helps establish the horizon line and the water wont bug you as much, also use the sky to help establish the tilted horizon. I don't know what else to suggest about it, you could render the water more violent to compensate for the angle, though that just leaves to more work. I leave that up to you :)

Actually, more thoughts on the walrus: What is the plural of walrus? You can put an i on a lot of things that end with an s sound, eg. cactus -> cacti, but some go funny like, mice -> mouse, or moose -> moose. So, would walrus stay the same and be plural? Same goes for the platypus....

Here's a self portrait that has minor resemblance to me, and some more on the vacuum. Not particularly happy with it, or the title, but I made some pretty neat brushes for this.

Good study of the walrus there, and the wrinkle texture is a fine addition. It's nice to see that you pushed the vacuum idea to final stage, I like the choice of colours (damn it there goes again) and the base seems like it made of carbon fibre material? A logo would be nice to go with the design, tho you've already got some nice flame-like decals on there. The shadow may be conflicting with the subject, or if you like to have a wall there maybe use that for something like an electric socket. Great piece overall!

I hope I made some good comments, you give a lot of feedback to my work. And plural for walrus.. a walrie? sounds like wall-e (no stereotype intended)

I actually really liked those posters though, CA material or not - I don't think anything drawn or sculpted is "not CA material" anymore, heh.

The vaccum kind of needs more of a focus point, getting a part of it more shiny or detailed.. it ends up being a lot of empty space but it's not really leading to anything... Not sure I can express myself right here or that if I make any sense at all :P

Thank you all! I apologize for my extended absence: I've been on vacation dodging elk droppings (they make some pretty massive piles) and praying for running water each night, then getting up and climbing 700m vertically. Lots of fun. :sungod: Enjoyed myself immensely and did absolutely no drawing. Oooo, and now I know what a big horn sheep burping sounds like. It's hilarious. Trust me.

Strings: Thanks for the crits and ideas. It turned out I ran out of time, and all I added was the diagram I did earlier minus the explanation to fill under the title. I hate painting shiney things from my head- study, study, study....

BlackDelphin: Well, this wasn't intentional, but after some thought as to why I may have chosen the colours I did unconciously (I didn't think too much as you might be able to tell :P) might have been that I have some variation of the primary colours (Pink bg-> red, Aqua vac -> blue, Limeish headlights -> yellow) . I think you're aiming for the opposite on the colour wheel. I'm not so much bothered by the colour scheme myself, but that really means nothing.

Sorkness: WALRUSSES!!!!!!... or whatever, really, really rock. Yeah, considering CA has a toy section now, I'm not sure if there is really even going to be 'not CA material' soon. The more the merrier in my opinion. If you're talking about the empty area to the right of the vac, I added the diagram that I did earlier, but I agree about some detail or something- it's quite bland right now.

Walid D: Thank you very much. My contrast sucks and leaches excitement from many things. I shall practice.

Along with fixing the gal's leg, you might want to move her body a bit higher on the rock so it looks more like she's riding it. Right now it seems her non seen leg is inside it.
Also, I was having a hard time figuring if that was a goat or a cow. (still am actually. : O ) Maybe give it a bit more fat if it's a cow?
But it's looking pretty fantastic so far. : > It's a neat concept. I do like the idea of an actual milky way in the background.

I almost want to see the entire planet rather than having it cropped on the corner. And you've already pointed out her leg and while you're working on that part, maybe include small pieces of the rock/comet trailing it. The animal scores a perfect 10 for me :D

I did a ton of stuff today! Made four pairs of earrings and a necklace, cleaned, sketched a bunch, and then painted this stuff. My eyes hurt now, but I'm happy.

So..... Dragon. Tried two different colour combos, but decided on this. About six or seven hours. I'm shocked at myself. Is the smudge a bit too much? Crits?

733969

733970

Then tried to do skintones from my mind just to see if I could.

733971

And did some airplane sketches. I'm going to do an acrylic with one of the thumbs, so which do you think is best?

Nice sketchbook. There's such a variety going on here. The only thing I would say is free up your hand a bit, some things look a bit static? Maybe practise drawing loosely. Awesome though. Weird and wonderful stuff.

This update is kick@ss! Pixie_Trick, and it is really refreshing to see you've been consistently mixing up the technical and organic studies. Is that an Avro Arrow design up there? On the dragon piece, I think you've made good decisions. Even if you don't think so, take what you learn from it I guess. I'm really digging the lighting/shadow work in this. I sort of like the mirror flip version of this composition, though that can really vary. I also think that the colours of the bg elements should be somewhat muted, less saturated.

:asspat:

Awwww man I'm inspired to draw up some airplanes. Who knows, I'm all beat up today.

HAJiME: Thanks! Right about the hand bit. I've got some 4 foot tall paper I think I'm going to go draw the neighbor's deer with. Should help with that!

Strings: Nope. No avro arrow. Mainly the Mirage 4000. I think most have little labels next to them tho they're a little small in the pics. I'm kind of worried about this because it's for a pilot. *eek* You're right about the bg I thinks. It needs some general touchups, which are staring at me. The best compositions are the ones that work in both directions I've heard! Go draw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Small post -> Godly gift wip. I think the mb perspective vid is leaking. :P It needs some major reds in there. I might go with something altogether different from this. Who knows? And what's really weird is that I'm feeling sickly from not doing a study two big-ish works in a row. studystudystudystudy

Some stuff. A process of the plane. Lots of work left. It looks a great deal better in real life. The bottom is actually a nice turquoise-ish colour, but I painted over some crappy(er) background and put on a yellow glaze which the camera doesn't appear to like.

That cow is so awsome, hehe!

When it comes to the paintings though, maybe just putting them to BW/grey for a short while and figuring out where the shadows should drop might be a good idea? Focus on your light and darken or desaturate or whatever the area where the shadows falls, both first and secondary, it might help you get some more depth and 3d in your images? Then go back and work from what you found?

hey there pix!
wait ta go here; really nice stuff.
I still see a break between your fantasy and your life drawing -but it's coming closer together. I really dig that black statue btw. but you'll notice the front 'leg' in the colored version is a lot higher up then in the sketch -which puts it off balance.
the monkey is great too. whatch your verticle lines when drawing life outside with a pad. it's easier to get distortion b/c of the paper not being in the optimal position.
all in all, digging the progress though!

I've gotten to the point where it isn't too hard for me to think of things in 3 dimensions, so I have a basic idea what it's going to look like. Weeeeelllll... I've decided I'm going to take a bit of a break from digital work. Traditional is just so much easier and faster for me personally. It's more enjoyable and easier to just let loose. Currently I'm..... I don't want to say confused, 'cause I'm not, but I'm just really, really unsure as to what on earth I'm going to do with myself after I finish high school and that's been haunting me. Whenever I have free time, I just kinda wander and do a bit of everything I enjoy (too much reading!!!) and just in general feel a bit aimless. I have no goal or passion or whatever. I'll browse people's sketchbooks etc. and see people who are working sooooo hard to be concept artists, and architects etc. and it bothers me to no end. I just feel that if I had a definite goal, I could be more focused. I don't know.... gahhhh. Emotion dump. :P I've been thinking of this a lot obviously.

And now for the real post.... :D Went to an air show yesterday!!!!!!!! Saw aerobatics with the smoke and everything, and fighter jets, and vintage planes from the 30s onwards. By the end of the day I had sunburn and was too drained and excited to draw properly which can be seen in the worsening of the pen sketches.

So, there's an acrylic study. It turned out pretty well (better than the photo shows). I only have titanium white, cadmium red med., hansa yellow med., mars black, and pthalo blue (red shade). This means that it's impossible to get a good purple or pink because of the such non-blue red. I've had to pick objects to paint very carefully.

Just random things. I've been looking at the illustration sin by "The best children's books in the World" book, and drooling over the illustrations. My current fave is Dragon Feathers illustrated by Andrej and Olga Dugina. They capture midieval style sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo well. They've actually illutrated some of Madonna's kids books (yes the singer) Looky looky Link (http://www.metakultura.ru/dugin/index1.html)

Had some fun with loading bushes different ways. I actually like this a bit even though it looks a bit faded and washed out. Colour frustrations again! Need a more red blue too....

I actually wasn't going to post this for obvious reasons, but decided for record purposes to do so. It's also the day a black subject matters shows up and guess who happens to forget that colour of paint at home. I was actually helping out here so it was also really, really rushed which didn't help.

Meh. The person really isn't that demonic as the first head, and not a snapey as the second.

785961

And some silverpoint. I had read about this in a few places, and decided if it was good enough a couple of hundred years ago, the least I could do was give it a go. I had thought you needed a special base, but it turns out gesso works fine. Just stick some of my scrap silver in a pin vise and doodled. I don't like it much, but it was good to try. Unfortunately silver isn't listed as a medium in the upload list. :P

Yup yup! Good to see a number a drawings added! Keep pushing for more practice. The more you get, the more you are getting better! With that female portrait, be careful about coloring tones the same color as the base colors. So if something is yellow, dont just have the shaded area a darker version of that yellow. This can be quite tricky to understand but you can use some reference to help you see.
If you want to look into the technical side of the color thing I was talking about, you can read up some tutorials on light behaviors. But it can be quite technical though. Best thing to do really is observe as much from life.

Nice digi paint! Watch the perspective and make sure different objects follow the same erm.... perspective! :P You have the horizon line quite high up, but if you imagine the turtle on a square base, it looks like its at a quite level angle. Now put that same base (of the turtle) onto the landscape, the angle should be more level too. Just visualize it this way in the beginning and it should help. Keep going!

T: *sigh* It's the quiet ones you always have to watch.

At which point I did not erase it, but added a speech bubble to the alien/furry racoon/snail with legs which said "Hello Mrs......." as well as "La, La, La!!!" The wrote a note saying I would erase it if she wanted but I just really wanted someone to sit down and laugh.

I should scan in the backs of my French notes too.... :P

Anywhoo...at some point there will be a huge skechdump. I have a bunch, but I don't want to scan so many pages and since I accidentally killed my camera I have to carefully sneak my bro's off some day.

Went to BodyWorlds in Orontonto (Toronto) over the weekend. Bought a bunch of paint. Saw the most grown people dressed up that I've ever seen. I was a Unicorn Hustler. Don't laugh. :D

So some IDW duplicator stuff. Inspired by polymer clay art pendants and the shape of a heart. (Yep, another post will nearly no art...)

georgdeesio: Thank you very much! (look down to see your with granted..... :D)

Caco: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into that. And thanks for dropping by.

iven: Thanks. Oooo.... I'm blushing! What do you mean precisely by drawing in boxes? Hehehe... wire is fun to play with. You can go the hardware store and get about 50m for about 2 or 3 bucks.

On Sunday, I went to the National Portfolio Day in Toronto. As I was standing in the first of many lines, my mom started talking to the mom of the person behind us. We start talking and I got to see the person's portfolio. I see the first pic and think, "Hmmm... I've seen that somewhere...???" It turns out I was standing next to Zorcron from here on CA!!!!! It's really neat to meet someone from halfway across your Country that it turns out you've kind of "seen" before. :D :yayca:

Anyway, NPD is a chance to meet reps from art schools across Canada and the US, and get feedback on your portfolio. I saw one of Sheridan reps. It was a waste, as the woman was more focused on telling me how great their current students were. She didn't say what she didn't like, did like, why she liked it or anything. The second rep I saw was from Alberta College of Art and Design. The rep said that they'd waive the portfolio part of the application for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's absolutely great to have someone "important" acknowledge all the time and effort into my pieces. I'm very happy to say the least.

So, the art for the last weeks.

Some play. There's some interference paint (<- awesomeness) in there, as well as some beads.

832136

A SP... thing. The normal looking one is from a mirror, and the weird one is from mind/looking at the first. The pic really looks bad compared to real life. The first is an....OK likeness. Not great, but not horrible as some I've done. Oh, and they're on the front and back of the same panel. I think I need to start using acrylics more thickly.

Really like the jeans on the person laying in the lawn chair, and the design of the robed character in the first image is interesting. :)

For the rendering, I would suggest maybe trying to focus less on outlining things, and more in the shapes that different values are making. Some of your sketches don't really feel very 3D, so that may help.

BlackDelphin
November 30th, 2009, 06:28 AM
And here you are with more traditional work, giving me a great example of what i should do :D

Well i really like the first page, with the writing on the sock and the 4th one, with the tiger, the girl and the pants-drawing view :)

Pixie Trick
November 30th, 2009, 03:56 PM
Danny K: Thanks! Will do!

Caco: You make a very valid point. Thanks.

Blacky: The tiger and girl are both from a beautiful book cover by Sam Weber. I have his name on the page but it's too small to read I guess. Link -> Sam Weber's Site (http://sampaints.com/) Link -> The book Cover (http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n54/n271823.jpg)

Some little things. There is so much wrong with the anatomy, esp. the hands so I really don't even want to look at it. The experiment was originally an egg study (you can kinda see them in the bg) but it turned quite hideous, so it became abstract. I need to stop avoiding doing real work by doing 'experiments'.

Blacky: I know I can do better to. Currently it's more a matter of time than anything else though.

Bendgragon: Yep, yep yep. The words of truth.

This is probably the last, or second last post for this year. I'm soon off on what I hope will be an awesome trip to India. My life has been consumed by catching up on work I will be missing as well as the associated errands that must be done when traveling.

Anyway, in celebration for the trip, I've made myself a sketchbag! It's not the most beautiful, or best crafted by any means, but the idea has been bouncing around my head for a while. Pockets for pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners as well as two small sketchbooks, or one small sketchbook, a set of dry watercolours and other dodads. It rests at hip level on me.

I've also decorated a sb, which I think is going to become a sort of travel journal. It has 99 pages (used to be 100 :P), and hopefully will become 100% full. It makes good portfolio fodder for university applications anyway. I'm looking forward to how it's going to turn out.

And some sketches. Took BD and Caco's advice to heart. I looked at everything and saw that it was like a colouring book (to a certain extent) and decided I had to fix that. Some hands are good, some are bad. The small ones in the corner separated by a line are from mind. I really like the one of the guy sleeping on the couch. Fairly good likeness, even if he looks a bit happier in the pic than he actually did. I also got a bit of a eureka moment while doing the plane version.

Last thing to announce is that I've submitted a few thing to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Just got sent to New York today. We'll see how that turns out in a couple of months.

Happy 2010 everyone!

I've been feeling bad for putting off posting... here's some of the sb. It's going to take some time to take pics of it all and everything. I'm not going to do all of it. Some pages are solid writing too, so I'm leaving those out. I've been drawing since I've been back too, but that's going to have to wait to be scanned/photoed until I've got the backlog of school and this sb done.

Voila the first couple of pages of art. No particular order other than they're in the front. Oh, and I had relatives going through this every other day, so I apologize for how the pencils got fuzzy in the beginning.

And some more. I could actually tell I was getting better by the end, especially when I had enough time to draw a page or five a day. I also realized that I probably have an unhealthy fascination with the strangeness of animals. They have buffalo with blue eyes there. There's a pic below. There's also some very strange weaponry out there. There's a pic of how a scissor punching dagger works down below.

You're very skilled and a lot of cool things seems to be happening in your head.
If anything, you could try to construct everything more 3dish in your sketches. You don't decompose the shapes into basic primitives, and that only makes it harder for you.
Overall, very cool stuff.
PS: I really like the pig with the hat, it's incredibly funny!

Pixie Trick
January 27th, 2010, 01:45 PM
lennon: Hehe...the pig with the hat is from life and sings "I'm too sexy for your love..." etc. :P You're spot on about the basic shapes. I find it very hard to do so. I shall try anyway!

wicked updates, i think sitting down and doing a few long still life sessions with acrylics would be a super healthy way to be working with color
(with acrylics you can work with it for a long time and have a "visual dialogue" with the painting i think its a lot harder to do the same with watercolor or washes
in the beginning at least that has been my experience)

i cant stress the "from life" bit any more, photos just dont do what you see in reality justice

keep up the hard work its paying off :) (line is looking wicked btw )

A still life on 4x4 board with acrylics. I was pretty happy with it two days ago and now I see issues...gah. the parachute ideas were really cute.
The painting of the banana looks great too. But for some reason, it looks to worked up, like it has one layer to many of paint.

I think you draw what you like, no? So no, drawing weaponry and animals you find interesting doesn't seem weird to me.

Thanks for showing the blue eyed buffalo too :)

OmertA: Thanks!

LtPlissken: I have no idea. I was afraid to ask. :P

Zorcron: Thanks. Ya, it was small. I had a bunch of board that was pre-cut to that size so I just used it. Lazy!

BlackDelphin: It's great to see you back up and around! The still life was a lot of layers. I'm having trouble finding a balance of how I would like to work with acrylics. You can work with layers of thin paint on layers and get very good effects, but you can also work very thickly and get great results. In some ways they are very much like watercolours, and in others completely different. In this case I was trying to work thicker than I have in the past. I'll just work through it and find a way I like! :) Thankyou! :geekg: You should have seen the monkeys.....

Well, I've managed to get mild tendinitis in my right hand and arm, so I think hardcore artwork is out right now. I got up this morning and just holding doorknobs hurt. :( It's a bit better now, but I don't want to push it.

Ahoy there!
I see that you are doing two things that I am avoiding relatively good: you are drawing a lot from life and you are doing lot of animal drawings. I really appreciate it and I like your devotion to this drawings. I would like to start doing these also, especially drawings from life, like for example drawing people around me like you did, but I just cannot get myself into that dimension :( .

What I like more here is that you have a pretty amount of sketches and you are working overtime and I think that he mileage and the experience will bring the crop in at the end, just keep going like this.

I was examining more your sketchbook lately and I would suggest that you do your pencil drawings in the fashion like you did here, cause this looks the best if you ask me. The shading and the lines are so great, maybe just go more darker with the dark areas:

Pixie Trick
February 13th, 2010, 09:00 AM
LtPlissken: Just get out there and try doing some stuff from life, and animals and anything else you want. You can try it, and it might look horrible, but if you work at it, it'll work out. Working at anatomy etc. and from life is so you can show what you want to say through images and have it look the way you want. (HAVE FUN TOO :D) It's a bit like trying to speak swahili or something and not knowing where to start. You aren't going to be able to do poetry or make a nice story if you don't learn the language first. And believe me, when you try learn a language you make so many mistakes that are embarrassing it's ridiculous. I know I don't like to put myself out there and make the mistakes, so you end up not saying anything and not getting better.

Thank you for the insight. You're right about the darks.

I did some landscape thumbs a while back that I found. Meh.

The landscape studies in post #212 are good, though much too many colors. Limit your pallet to 3 or 4 main colors and check out this (http://chapter-56.blogspot.com/2006/11/speedpainting.html) tutorial on speed painting. It has helped me throughout the years.

If you got something from the study, that is worth your time! In fact, any time you sit down and draw you are learning more about art!

Nice paintings, though I think you can define the foliage more. Theres a tendancy to loosely brush in the foliage without much structure to it. Try think of it in 3d space like u do with the buildings.

Blacky: Thank you so much for the support. It mean so, so, so, so much. :sungod: Truly.

Bendragon: Thanks for the tip!

My arm was pretty upset last week. The tendonitis spead to my elbow, so now I have tennis elbow. Then I got some in my left arm from using it more. Finally I got some golfer's elbow (I didn't even know it existed!) in my right arm as well as pulling my triceps. It's all much better now, but that week was painful. :P

The interviews went well. At OCAD, they let you into the interview room about 20 minutes before the actual interview so you could set up and get and idea of what the profs were asking other people. The profs looked at the stuff for about two minutes, completely ignoring all digital work I had on my laptop. They then spent the last eight minutes lecturing me on how I was perfect for the materials arts program, and how I had to be sure I was doing what I loved as well as another lecture on what the two other 3d-real life design courses were and how I wouldn't like any of them. They finally told me that if you really want something hard enough you can do it. I was completely prepared to start answering questions etc. but they hardly let me say a single thing the entire time. Really, really anticlimatic. Whatever... they liked the work I had out and I got told by the student helping I was accepted, but wait for the letter.

Here's a pic of the waiting room on one side.
923748

The other one was with about 50 other people at the same time, and the test was really lame. They gave you two articles, had you summarize them, then add two or more pictures. You could either copy the pics off of a set of samples they gave, or make your own.

One of the things I was told at National Portfolio day was that a nice, well done pencil drawing would be a good addition to a portfolio. I made on up for the interviews. Eight hours or so, and a pic of the setup for those interested. The pics has a bit more contrast than the original. I've been doing so much digitally that I've been spoiled by the array of easily achieved values. Pencil just doesn't do BLACK, which upsets all the relative values. Add to that the amount of values that you can pick out with your eye that won't show up in a photos etc....... Learned a lot to say the least. Practice....

WHAT DID I TELL YA!?! EAAAASY :teeth:
I'm sure you'll be getting that letter soon!
I take it they were more interested in your traditional work, preferring it over digital?
Guess i should do more finished, neat pencil work, huh.

It is interesting reading about your interview :)
Makes me understand how things work about that, now that i'm starting to have a shred of a chance at least.

Sketch book is looking great, life-interview too, you also seem healthy, what more can you want?! :teeth:
Keep it up Pix! :D

goood this page is a real step up ! ugh i dont think il recover from NPD just so many people i got to see 2 schools >.< i still have nightmares im pretty sure LOL! did you ever take a look at NSCAD ? (they have a really strong program) i was kind of disapointed with OCAD's Student work ...design program looked good but others seemed left out

Thanks for your comment in my sketchbook :D

The hand sketches show a lot of form, but I doubt your hand really looks like that :P the technique is good, now your just have to .. feel the form I guess ^^

That National Portfolio day looked like a fun thing to do :) For what did they review? Art in general or for games.. etc. ?

Hope to see another update soon :)

Turbosnail: Thanks! :)

Kristoff: Thank you!

LTPlissken: I'm not in the photo- I was the one taking it!

Blacky: hehe... I'm not sure about the easy bit. I was soooooo nervous. The student was very nice, and probably had something to do with the good response though. He liked my work and said that he 'set me up with the right profs'. I'm glad someone is getting something out of all this. I'm not sure how art universities work in Romania, but I'm sure they can't be tooooooo diferent.

Zorcron: Thanks! Yea- NPD was an experience. I've never really looked at NSCAD. I checked out their site, but not much more than that. It's a long way from home. :\ The thing about ACAD is that I have two families of relatives living a 5 min drive from the school, so I'm not quite so on my own. OCAD is only a 4h drive away, so those are the two schools I'm looking at. I hear what you mean about the student work at OCAD. I went to their open house, and what I saw was pretty mediocre, other than the design. I like the style and quality of work coming out of ACAD better too. OCAD seems more editorial centred, while ACAD is a bit more diverse. They even have a character design stream there! To tell you the truth, the people there were a bit friendlier too. Maybe it's just because it's a smaller school. Actually, I visited the campus of Emily Carr, and the placement of the school just turned me off. Granville island! Yes it's on the water, but in Vancouver the rent would be horrendous, and there's so many tourists around there.

N00dles: You're welcome! I know.... the hand! I can't believe I didn't notice the size discrepancy while I was drawing! National Portfolio Day happened in November. I have a bit more about it on the previous page. Basically it's a whole bunch of art schools, and you can go get your portfolio critiqued by the profs of different schools from U.S. and Canada. They're not allowed to give acceptances there, however. Here's a video of how hectic it is!: LINK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQy7wKbD8zs)

A big dump. Not happy with most of it. :(

On the other hand, did you know that whales have baby teeth! And dogs and cats and cows and dolphins and hamsters and any type of mammal! So coooooool! :steph:

Here's some more work on the peace piece (hehehe..... :geekg:). It's 24 x 16 inches I think. There's going to be a ton of glazing going on, so it looks a bit weird. This is basically under painting right now. And a bit for teen challenge.

LTPlissken: Puns...... :)

I did a ton more on the peace thing, but I'm too tired to try and take a good photo. In my attempt to make a warmer blue for the bottom, it kinda morphed into this purple/indigo shade. :( So here's some smaller things I did out of boredom as I waited for paint to dry. It seems all acrylic looks a million times better in real life. The bird one is actually kind of pretty. More work on the cave too. It's turning out better than I thought it would.

Oooo... and made some new brushes too! Fun! :D

Cool work in here man. The perspective on that hole in the top of the cave looks a little off, almost like we're looking above it. Play with that a bit if your still working on it. Keep it up!!

RickyS: Thanks. :)

jskotte: Thank you very much!

Kristoff: Thanks... I think enviros are one of my weaker spots....... figures are my weakest. :geekg:

Omerta: Markers are fun! They make you work with what you have down and keep you moving onwards.

Jasper: Great catch. :) I'm hoping to find some time and get a nice portfolio piece out of it.

Zorcron: :anime:

More work on the peace thing. Not done yet.

941422

Some closeups. Sorry for minor blurriness.

941423

A comic based off of the book No Great Mischief. This is following the story of the dogs in the book. The theme throughout is "trying too hard and caring too much" It turned out so depressing it's almost funny.

941425

Some sketches of Darwin. Strangely enough he wears almost the same outfit in all the photos/drawings I can find of him. Weird.

941426

More on the cave. The jpg file seems to bump the brightness up from what I see in PS so a lot of stuff that looks like uninterrupted dark turns out a gross. :( Also, the more I work on it, the more regular the rock formations get. Poo.

Hello my good friend. Great thing that you posted some new work, that is the sign that you are doing ok and everything is great around you.

The peace subject is going well, keep working on it, maybe do a little more details and all will be fine.
The cave is not looking really realistic, and those things do not look like rocks, they more look like piled up fat, like fat on the human body or something similar. Try to work more there on texture and materialization.

The comic book pages, are ruined, sorry I have to say ruined just because of one thing: the text is on most of the part un-readable.
No matter what you do or how you illustrate your story, no matter how crappy or how good your drawings are, one thing is a must: your text must be done with a clear and readable fonts.
Like this, I have tried to focus on the story and I can see what is on the pictures but at some point I cannot read the text clearly , let's say in the first quarter of the story, I already cannot read clearly and I am automatically losing the concept, the idea of the whole story. That is how the readers will easily lose the interest of the story and will not see what you have tried to say.
You have to think about that the next time, you do a comic book, and make the fonts a little bit larger.
I hope I was not too harsh with these statements.
All I wanna do is help.
I am glad that you tried different things and mediums.
Do more, post more, I will be following.

The 'peace thing' is starting to look very good :)
The colours make a nice contrast (i like the blue tones so much!) and the way those soldiers hold hands is very touching.

Wonderful overall mood pixie, can't wait to see it finished.
Portraits and everything else looks good too! :D

LtPlissken: Thanks for the crits. I agree the rocks look a bit iffy. I think part of the problem with the comic is that I posted the images smaller than life size so that you could see them all without excessive scrolling. Here's one page at life size. You weren't to harsh at all. I'm quite happy I'm getting crits and you gave me something to remember the next time I do a comic.

jskotte: Thank you my dear. :)

Blacky: Thankee, thankee. :)

Got accepted of OCAD for illustration. And Ryerson for Architecture. Gahhhhh..... I've had no time to draw until today really, and boy did I make up for it. I made a 6 foot long painted dragon with movable joints and body for a friend's bday over the weekend. Then I had a badminton tournament today so I took my sb along and did some gestures. Drew some friends on the bus. The girl on the page with math on it is nearly a perfect likeness. (So excited! :rocker:) And did some master value studies/comp studies, but by that point I was completely dead so they suck.

950004

950006

Other gestures from a couple of days ago. All from imagination. Did a PS thing but it was utter poo so it's not going up. :P

Oooo... and I added a link in my sig with a thread I'm going to loading pics of my jewellery onto. I figure I mention it enough, I might as well show some too.

Hey, you've been busy! :)

I like the studies, you're improving! Love the statue on the page before. It's also great that you did the comic, you develop both figures and enviros that way. It's a really sad story though... :(

Cheers and keep it up!
