Here are just some things from my sketchbook.
Included are character sketches for a story I'm trying to pile together as well as whatever I felt like drawing in class. I know one thing I have to start doing is more observational sketches. Those never thrill me =_=;
I'll be trying to update this thing at least once a week... Hehe.

Just getting all my scans & whatever done for the day before I get started on a few projects I've put on hold.
The Siege of Mars was done for a CA Teen Challenge. Loads of fun >o> I'm going to be trying to do a challenge a week for improvement purposes.
And the undead carriage is something for Industrial design for the week. Hope I can finish it before the deadline~
The last one I just like because I was screwin around with some textures and the results weren't bad. : D
And thanks for the feedback, everyone ;0;

Hey man,
Very interesting sketchbook you have here.
I love you attention to details and the clean linework, although somehow i prefer your "sketchy" drawings, before you clean them up.
Some wicked concepts you have here, that undead carriage for an instance. And I also like textures in last piece.
Keep updating, Id like to see more of those figure studies. They are going along very nicely. :teeth:

JFierce - Thanks, dude xD
Jarhead - Haha I'll try. I'm a chick though : D
Blaz - Thanks~ I've seen you sketchbook as well. The detailed city-scape really caught my eye. I'll totally try to do more of those studies. Maybe next time with different species and what-not.

Just spent the afternoon coloring some figures I've been doodling. The coloring took about 40 minutes or so on each character, screwin with color schemes or whatever. Trying to depict fashion in each different region for a personal project I'm working on. *refuses to give out anymore on that*
There was one more but there was some trouble lining him :davi: , so I'll fix him up later.

Nice SB so far. Some very cool pencil work.
The painted image actually would benefit from some of that linework, so get in there with a sharper brush and basically add some coloured lines. The images would be alot stronger IMO with some sharper edges.

The images with the gray backs and random characters are just some sketch commissions I whored myself out to to get some extra cash for holiday shopping. There'll be more of those >_>
The other two or just little things from my actual sketchbook. :0
I should start... Working on something for my own benefit ~sigh~

I'm digging your style, especially the poses you've done. The character you've done are 'just' cool. You make me want to sit drawing all the bizarre things in my mind

I just wanted this to be a post for itself to say: Dear god someone crit me with colors/skin tones/coloring the human body because as seen below this can be described as a bucket of failure. A big bucket. :davi:
I don't mean to be so hard on myself.... Well... Yes I do because that's the only way to improve, eh? Anyways, HELP. CRIT. ADVICE. Anything and everything is appreciated. <3
(I'll be posting more later today)

Happy New Years~!
Another dump of sketchbook junk. I've been doing alot of face/human body studies lately. Its fun and all but it gives me the shaky feeling that the more I work on this stuff the more rusty I get on my environments. And I've rusty to begin with.
I wish there were more hours in the day. :lifedrawing:

What's there to say. Your stuff is sick. I'm in love with the very very last image with the 2 of them splitting apart.
I think the one thing you're missing is angular shots. Try some very weird perspective stuff. You'd probably rock it and give your mind a workout!

Awesome! But I wold try to add in some more cool colors, not just blues and all that, but muted colors. Hmm.. it does depend on lighting, and I guess I'd have to show you myself or something. xD Idk. But yar - :P you're getting better with poses! Very quick and lively.

I've been wanting to work a little more with super-dynamic poses >3>
Waaaggghhhh so many things I should be working on :^^;:
So here're just some things I've been screwin' with this past week for kicks and giggles.
I've actually started on this week's Teen Challenge but the WIP so far is pretty uhm... Well, not pretty. I'll try to be working more on that later today if I get th time.

Hey Dude, thanks for popping by my sketchbook and leaving kind words.
You've got some nice things happening in here, really nice line work, I'm lovin that last piece with the shark, very cool. My suggestion for your skin tones is to create a basic under-painting of your base skin tones and from there start adding opacity washes of reds and blues over that, and remember Shadows generally = cool colors and highlights generally = warm.
Hope this helps, will drop back soon.
Cheers.

Thanks for stopping by guys, appreciate it x> !
I'm too lazy to actually get out my sketchbook and scan things so here're just a couple things I've finished.
The two with the tree was somewhat therapeutic for me because lately I've felt like balls so I decided to draw something "nice" for myself =o= And speed colored it in about 2.5/3 hours.
The comic is a commission I'm doing for this guy, who's paying me to do a couple pages of his story for him. He tried to cram a bunch of dialog and movement into two pages but I managed to talk him into stretching it out into four pages, so the introduction is nice and smooth rather than being crammed together. This is the first page so... Hence nothing much going on. There were some sepia tones in there but I personally think it looks way better just b&w.
Crit/whatever always welcome, dudes :)
~Peace.

I'd like to know how you make your lines like that. Is there a special brush you use? if so, care to share? Thanks.
Danuh
January 15th, 2008, 10:01 PM
coagulated - Nope, no special brushes here. I normally just either use microns or in photoshop the 3/4 px brush, and all the other standard brushes. Hope that helped :>

Hay Danuh i like your stuff bro! Especially your graphic design type pieces. The only thing i would suggest though is that you do as much desaturated stuff as u do saturated. Or at least try and find the right balance by mixing the strong colors with the weaker ones in the same place. Eg. use high saturation or contrasting colors in your focal area and leave everything else less saturated. Im starting to do that on the pieces i've almost finished and it makes a big difference.
Cant wait to see more Danuh - ness.

Hi there!
First time I've stumbled across your sketchbook and I must say your style is rather refreshing!
One quick crit...your pencil/sketch work needs some improving in areas, some look a bit 'whispy' and light and unbalanced in comparison to your marvalous ink/line work on the more finished pieces. (for example the sketches in post#3of the dog character).
On the positive side, I'm a massive fan of trying to create interesting fashion ideas for characters so the pictures in post #12 are amazingly beautiful to me! Especially the detail in the girls garments. The bold contrasting colours work so well too.
The album design in post #1 is lovely also. Can't wait to see more, I'll be dropping by again to see updates! :)

Just more junk from the sketchbook and two fanarts for the anime Samurai Champloo.

wooow!!!! first of all, thnx for stopping by my sketchbook mate
as for your stuff, what to say, your illustrated pieces are very powerful!!!! Mugen caught me right away, (samurai champloo is THE shit, offcourse)
I have to agree with icon, tweaking your colors is where you need to focus, other than that, my only comment is that you sometimes seem to have a "shaky" anatomy, especially in faces. Meaning that you're not stable at your symmetry and propotions. I think it's a matter of being focused, since most of your work is spot on!
Keep up, and don't ever let your manga roots out, they give a great edge to what you do! ;)

Raqsonu- Thanks, man. Eden, huh? I'll have to check that out~ It looks way interesting. <3
Davio- Thank you ;0; I personally didn't think that particular one came out too well. Its nice to see that someone liked it. xD
TheJester- Thanks for pointing all that out to me. Yeah, my coloring skills aren't "up to par" as of right now because I tend to rush things. And faces have always been a torture for me- I'm trying to solve that problem once and for all by the end of this year.
(And yes, Samurai Champloo is the shit indeed)

This is a work in progress of a project I'm doing for an AP Portfolio class. The mission was to create a "strange environment" so I chose something a little sci-fi and... cute because I fail at life and I wanted to draw a cafe scene.
so this is the lineart done with microns on bristol paper. I'm planning on sticking it in photoshop and playing around with it until I get something worth showing.

2 weeks until SUMMER BEGINS.
Of course I always get that itch to start producing crap like craazzyyy once finals start.
-Felt like watercoloring, he went from smoking a cig to smoking a damn firecracker. We had a few laughs about that.
-Birthday present for boyfriend *schoolgirlgiggle* and just a few doodles. For some reason I've been in a real dinosaur kick lately. Especially those cute wittle ceolophysises. Hehe they're chicken-sized.
-Observational sketch of a statue at the Met. Augh I had so much fun drawing all them twisted bodies and muscles. For once I enjoyed working in pencil.
-More doodles from class cause I have nothing else to do (aside from schoolworklol)
-More of my ceolophysis...
-Just something I did while waiting for the bus with colored sharpies and copic pens. It scanned really well for some reason >w<
-And finally something I should really get to inking. A random project created for my own satisfaction. Haven't drawn a chinese dragon since I was 11. It was a nice experiment. Working on matt board (cause that stuffs just so much fun) and this is only about half of everything. It's bigger than what I usually work with.
Bagh I need to start working in color
Danuh
June 12th, 2008, 10:05 PM
Okay I just finished this lineart of a Foo Dog and I disparately want it to be done and finished and colored and pretty. I haven't colored in photoshop in a while (or at all, actually) so at the moment I really can only focus on black and white.
WHAT IM TRYING TO ASK IS...
Any suggestions on how I should go about this? ;A; I'm like, starting from square one again.

The quickest way to throw colours under your linework in photoshop is as follows.
Open the file
tweak the levels if needed,
rename the layer (eg: Linework)
set it to multiply (this works like an animation cel-all white is see through).
Place a layer or more under the Linework layer
Start colouring in (on the layers under "linework")
There are other ways to do this too, but I think this ones the simplist.

That last one has nice colors and you did a great job on the guys shirt, the details on his shirt do seem out of place, the texture makes it look like silk because its reflective... I think it is a little to over rendered for the type of paint you are going for, but it is excellently rendered if that makes sense...
but ya sketch studies look good, might want to look at the eyes though they are a little out perspective keep it up though and stop by sometime

Ah, I've started figure drawing classes in NYC at SVA so I'll have some of those up after a few weeks. I've only been there for two sessions so far so the most we've done is 20 minutes *can't wait to get into watercolors*.

Thanks for the nice comment in my sketchbook.
hmm, as far as advice about portfolio, I can say the best thing would be to attend national portfolio day and talk to a RISD representative face to face. (check the website for dates near your area). As a veteran of national portfolio days, I can tell you the line for RISD will be about 1 or more hours long X_x. It's good to also go to a bunch of schools that you might not be applying to, but have small lines, and get as much feedback as possible, and then only wait in one or two long lines. (I got some of the best advice from the SMFA folks). Also, I cheated and had my mom wait in the RISD line while I visited other schools.
As for general portfolio tips: they like to see lots of observational work and things drawn from life. Too much in one set "style" can be harmful sometimes. They want to see variety between personal/creative work and foundation/observational stuff. It's a tricky balance. Good luck!
ps. If you are on facebook, check out the group Lucy's Risd Admissions 101. It's very helpful :)

that coloured figure further up is nice, and the cluttered image at the top is cool. I guess you could start defining the better ideas in your sketches, picking them out and developing them further, that's a skill that takes a lot of practice, ya know, picking out ya best bits, something I'm shite at. Found my camera so here are a few of many figure studies from the past two months (I'll have more up later) - and an entire collage of gesture drawings. When I submit gestures as a part of my portfolio I don't want just one page with like.. FOUR PEOPLE- I want em all- er- most of em >__>; *had to make some sacrifices*
Under that is a color study; nothing really thought about when I made this I just wanted to test out my gauche skills (I can never remember how to spell that crap). And under THAT is a drawing I did for this freshman I know. It was her birthday and she likes the animemanga like woah so I felt like being nice. hurhur.
Ah, also are some photos of me nd my friend Carlen battle drawing on a white board *I'm not actually in there lolz* aaannnnddd one of the teachers at my school who dressed up as Sarah Palin for halloween. I thought that was pretty great.

The rest of the figures I've done w/ my crappy little camera. Sorry, some of the pics here were taken at weird angles because I was in sort of a rush.
My figures still aren't the best (for example I see now that I have the tendency to draw wrists and ankles too thin) but at least I know what to watch out for next time.

I fiddled around with him in photoshop to see if I could come up with some better advice for you, and here it is. If you press ctrl+l, you can see the level distribution in your pic. Where all of your values fall, basically. Poor Goblin has all dark and light values, but no midtone :( I think you have a bit of a trick-of-the-eye thing going on with him, and it's not working in your favor. When you see that particular shadow color and highlight color together, your brain comes up with kind of an icky midtone. That's the color the viewer thinks his skin is in less intense light.
What you can try is, on another layer, pick a nice midtone and schmear it all over his face at %50 opacity. Then, at whatever opacity you usually use, redefine all of his features, then reshade and highlight what you've got. LSDfl;jsajfd. I'll just draw you a diagram. That trick helps me a lot when I've gone overboard.

I really feel like I'm beginning to fall out of the whole internet community thing. Getting help and crits from crowds of invisible people (no offense intended) is nice and all but speaking to people face to face is so much more impressionable. I think by the time I get to college I'll have removed myself from a lot of the sites I used to frequent, Deviantart, Sheezyart, Conceptart, etc., and just set up my own site or blog and leave it at that.
The internet is good for quick information but that's about it. I'd rather read a clunky dusty text book than a quick page-long article written by whoknowswho. I'm sick of all this pageview competition and fake interwebs publicity bullshit. Though CA isn't nearly as bad as deviantart or youtube (even facebook for that matter. HAY I GOT 489573498 FRIENDS!), I still see a lot of that needy attitude around. I'm no exception but I'm sick of finding myself so anxious over how many people looked at my SB today? Who commented on it today?
Cause guess what?
It doesn't matter anyway
... In other news I'm thinking about moving to England after college. What I'd really like to do is travel around Europe for maybe 10 years or so and see where it takes me. Brush up on all the languages I wanna learn. Only four years ahead, better start saving up.
....OH YEAH I TURNED 18.

Your tatoo looks sweet although it is not typical for tatoos. I don't have any myself although a friend of mine was enamored with Escher's repeating lizard and had himself scarred with that.
If that's a puppy he or she has got some really developed feelings to be shunning the photo ops. I'd also have to say that your hand Rocks! I'll have to scan mine although my camera's transfer cable has gone bad. It kind of looks like a gingerbread hand, made out of a cookie cutter clone...
Well, here's to the holidays anyway, :dead: Europe's not a bad idea but school is fun too, even if it's a communal thing in preparation for the big time! Happy B-day stay safe, drink some egg nog!:rocker:

EXCEPT I'm now doing capoeira (a brazilian martial art) and I have fell in love with it. The movements, the music, the excitement of the roda WAGH xD For the past 3-4 months I have been training 3-4 days a week and I will continue this into nyc in college.
I even graduated to my first cord (green) after like 2 and a half months ;w;
It's really a wonderful thing and I've met so many interesting people that offer a great source of inspiration when I sit down to draw. Healthy body healthy mind - got me outta my funk.

Oh yah and if no one has noticed yet I am an avid hellboy fan xD

Danuh cheers for dropping by my sb! I love your style and it's an awesome sb you got here! Absolutely loved all pages. The only thing, to me, that i could point out is that your outlines sometime detract from the perspective the figure has, but that may be a style thing as well. :D

Sound like a lot of good things going on all at the same time for you! Not to mention your sketches look fabulous. I'm sure you'll have no trouble picking up animation at SVA. I look forward to your animation studies!

mike- thanks so much :> Your avatar freaks me out to no end xD
comixnut- Thank you for pointing that out! :0 I always have trouble drawing people & perspectives, I don't know why. I'll work harder to improve. :>
camara- Thank you! :D
I decided to start a little portrait challenge, nothing big. Mostly pen sketches and speed paints of my friends from facebook and all that great stuff.
So let's hope I can actually complete this little project of mine.
Each head takes about 10-15 minutes and the speed paint was 45 min (and yes I realize her left eye is out of place a bit).

Just another set of 6. I'll try to do one set a day so I can finish this ridiculous quest early before I get sick of it.

Amazing sketchbook. Got to say that you have so many styles, or better word would be techniques used, in this sketchbook, even on the same page. Impressive. I especially love the Facebook sketches you're doing. Love the hatching.

It has been awhile since i've visited your sketchbook and i must say you've improved. Love the image with the octopi in the sky, love your animal studies, and your facial studies are really coming alone!
With the human faces: the way you've been using these studies and/or references (either from friends or faces you find) has really helped you to improve.
My only critique is to work a bit more on the fingers, especially when they curl, try to concentrate on how the lines and shadows shape the finger, see where they overlap & keep the roundness.
Hope the critique helps, Keep up the good work ;)
