ahoy-hoy, time for me to thrown in to the sketchbook chaos. anywho, my name is chase and im just an art school kid up in calgary, alberta, canada. I think i have waited this long to post a sketchbook due to an overwhelmed feeling created by so many damn artists on this forum. I am just completely inspired by the commitment and unrelenting talent that some many show day after day.

most these images are on my blog, but i think its time to get out of basement and get some crits. P.S. say what you gotta say!

It does look like Buscemi, although I didn't know he was sexiest. That and Kramer being racist, who would have thought.
Very nice work, you understand of light and color, but your brushing technique is bad wich is nothing important. Perhaps is because of the way your using your program. Also, don't upload your image so small. Don't be shy, your work is good.

Wow, lotsa great stuff. Of all the pictures here, i think the hand on a tablet sketch in post 9 is my favourite.

However, something must be picked on. In the "jailhouse" pic, the perspective looks rather extreme on the left. I'm struggling to see where the viewer is standing in the picture. The detail is cool, thou. Gotta love that crane.

I wish you had finished that Medusa for the comp, it'd definitely be one of the better entries.

you're doing some really neat things. Your sketches have especially strong linework. Your rendered/painterly stuff seems to lack a certain amount of punch. When practicing tones, what helped me a lot was doing value studies from photographs / old masters. It helps you understand the difference between using a full value scale and using a full value scale effectively. ;) It also helps a bit when thinking about lighting...which directly affects ze values.

TOOLED!

the only thing that bugs me (but i'm also enjoying it) is that all your pics are somewhat comical. nothing serious- just caricatures or bunny monsters

hehe, i think that my sketchbook is more of a reflection of my lighter side. i get a little more serious with natural media, i think it may be a time thing (more time invested tends to settle me down and get serious). thanks for the comment though, it is good to hear some alternative opinions. i'll have to mix it up a little more

ahh hillariously awesome stuff in here!
Your line-drawings are really ace. Argh I can spend so much time looking at those lines :o
You really should have 5 stars for this playground...argh

aaand crits! [well, just one really]
On your rendered stuff I really think you can push your lighting. Thinking more about staged lighting, or spotlighting...Right now you're mostly using a generic light source direction. It feels a bit like "light source is over here somewhere, and then everything else I'll chalk up to diffuse light". Spot lighting on details is good, and then playing with the diffusion of light as it fades out from the spot light really ads some drama, and a clear focuspoint. Then you can play up the bounce and diffuse lights for areas that are important, but not the main focus. Justin Sweet plays with the spotlighting stuff really well, if you're not familiar with his work...erm well you should be . ;)

July 16th, 2008, 03:25 PM
Hey man, thanks for stopping by my SB (you jumped on that update fast, lol).

Looks like you've got some pretty good work here.

Your figures are really excellent, remind me of Min (Bumskee). You might want to brush up on some details of non-human anatomy though (see that octopus-centaur DMC, you were really struggling with the horse legs).

faces are good too, I especially like some of the caricatures.

You might want to spend some time absorbing mechanical components and joints ... you want the details of how that stuff fits together to be a subconscious knowledge, just like the anatomy and proportions of humans.

Also, your rendering technique is quite good, although you seem to leave some promising pieces unfinished / underdeveloped.

A lot of your work seems very helter-skelter and stream-of-consciousness. Although you seem to really tighten things up as the process goes forward. This is a great way to develop ideas, but in some cases you might find yourself getting lost or frustrated.

One thing I notice is that you appear to be working purely in digital media. This really fits neatly into an approach with lots of reworking and overpainting, and that seems to work well for you, especially when you push things through to a polished finish.

However, I do suggest you try doing some traditional stuff, just to force yourself to commit to choices, it might help you to develop *effective* ideas more rapidly, in stead of having to do quite so much feeling around.

well enough of BS opinions, keep up the good work, I'll try to stop by regularly.

TOOLED!
July 16th, 2008, 04:21 PM
great crit there bludhund, thanks alot. haha, funny you should mention those horse legs. i felt they were pretty ulgy and completely wrong. and i hope to get moving on the mechanical bits too, they are probably my biggest and worst problem. i'll post up some studies and hopefully some bots soon. as for digital vs natural, i used to only do natural and moved into digital cause of the speed. but i still do natural stuff, i just haven't posted any lately, but there is quite a few paintings earlier in this thread. anywho, thnx for the response, and i'll get cracking on those issues you brought up. once again thanks for the great crit.

Texahol
July 17th, 2008, 05:09 AM
nice you pushing the lighting and edges.
your color choices are a bit weird to me. It feels like you don't think much about the colors. The way you shift your hues on an object feels a bit odd. Your hues and saturations don't really shift in a realistic manner, but I don't think its from a lack of knowledge. Just in general though, your highlights seem to be too saturated.

man, this is kind of a useless post, but I guess i'd just like to see what you do to finish stuff. [yeah yeah, it's supposed to be a sketchbook..argh]

TOOLED!
July 17th, 2008, 09:52 AM
yea, most these colors are experiments, i'm trying to play around with different types of combinations. i figure i'll stumble on to something and think "damn thats wierd, i'm keepin it!" i usually have to saturate my colors because as i paint i get pretty greyed down. thnx for the comment tho tex.

Absolutely fantastic stuff! I say it every time, but it still hasn't changed, so....

Sorry for the late answer by the way. By strange lines I meant: On the end wall closest to the viewer and the little green window below it, there are odd artifacts in the dark parts crossing over. Like they were colored with a lasso tool but without anti-aliasing on. Hard to explain(and its pretty minor), just thought I'd be nit picky :)

Hey Chase.

The sketchbook's looking great. So much inspiration here. Having said that, I was frustrated looking at the sketch of the red headed guy on the previous page. I saw the four legs and got ready to cackle,-and then you made them into robotic legs. shame on you. Only purely for not amusing me as much.

I'm really loving the work. You've got to keep adding to it! There's people here who want to see.
