Underpaint the dark greens, black, and burnt umbers and then paint the wood sticks on top very patiently.

study robert bateman paintings
think abstract
keep it loose
and thin yer paints
build the layers slowly
once its in artistic focus
hit it with bright delicious colors
the branches are stark white, so incorporate colors from the reflections, and moss
hope this helps,
