Hey new here, ive only been painting on photoshop for a couple of months now but i was just wondering, how do people get more texture in their paintings? i mean i use smudge for a large part of the painting and it works great i just find that my paintings just look a little fake, if u see what i mean? like 3D cartoony style lol. So yeh, just any input wuld be much appreciated :) thanks!

Well, you can start using other brushes while you paint, that have some sort of texture (in the brush properties). You can add another layer atop of you work that has a texture on it, and then play with the blending modes and opacity.

I once read a great tutorial on that topic.

Have a look at this:

The artist is a very talended illustrator and she often uploads tutorials about her work.

Sorry didnt want to start a completely new thread when this one is about what i wanted to ask. Ive read the link posted and quite a few others about addign texture but still am unsure about a few things. Looking on all these tutorial sites at "tute for creating stone/ metal / gold texture etc" how would you go about adding a texture like that to your painting, if you used a method like setting the layer mode to overlay or color burn or using bevel and emboss or something you would loose the colour from the texture you created wouldnt you.

I'm pretty new at digital painting myself, but I've been doing LOTS of research and practice.

When you use the smudge tool only, your paintings will look flat. Experiment using different brushes to get textured effects. Don't use the same brush style for the entire painting. Using different brushes will add interest to your piece. Also, overuse of the burn and dodge tool will give you a flat look too. It's okay to use these tools every once and awhile, but you won't get the desired look if it's what you rely on.
