How do you resize the canvas in real time?

I've seen many videos where the artist simply drags the canvas out and adds a new section, I'm wondering how you do this?

Using the crop tool (the overlapping half squares in the tool menu)

I'm not sure if you misunderstood the question or not, but I mean making the canvas bigger, not cropping it.

Drag the crop marquee beyond the original canvas border and apply it.
