1. open up painter, photoshop and 3d max for texturing work.
2. open up your internet cache and turn thumbnail view "on"
(imagin what your 9800 radeon has to do for 600mb worth of 1kb to 5kb images, not to mention a realtime model and both painter and pshop buffers)

my card actually started to smoke

any suggestions on a new card :(

Woah! I was actually gonna order a Radeon9800 today.

If that's what caused it, I think you'd certainly be within your rights to investigate the warranty and guarantee with ATI for a replacement. The card should not fry just like that.

Was it overclocked?

there is a possibilty that there was existing damage, the power poll next to my house was hit by lightning last month, and it fried my powersource even with the surge protector..it was so close it stoped battery opperated clocks in the house.. including the cars.

Wow. That must have been really scary! Does that happen often where you live? Since lightening hit that close to your home, I would go to a computer technician and get the whole computer checked out before you put another card in. As for the graphics card, if the lightening caused the damage and the problem wasn't with the card itself, I suggest another Radeon9800. I have been shopping around for a new card myself, and it seems like the best one so far.
