i think the foreground turned out very well. But the background appears kinda bland. i dont think that tone for the sky fits so well, apart from that it looks a bit boring.

but as you said its a WIP :D

The foreground seems to merge with the background a bit too much, so I'd probably suggest you a) increase the detail in the foreground, b) decrease the detail in the background and/or c)make the difference in saturation between the foreground and background stronger

Edit: I tried a few of the things I suggested in photoshop and I think I've worked out how to help bring the focus to the tree.

1) The highlights on the clouds behind the left most branch are too strong. Strong contrast always draws focus, so in this case the clouds become the focus instead of the tree. Just dim down the brightness of them and that's that solved. The dark patch in the top right clouds could be lightened a bit, same reason, highlights becoming too strong because of the contrast.

2) Increase the saturation of the highlights on the tree. This is the same rule as the last point, high ontrast draws focus, so higher saturated highlights on the tree will draw your focus to it.

3) This one isn't all that big a deal, but it might make a slight difference. use more colour in he shadows on the trunk. I tried a very dark green (almost black) and it seemed to help a bit. You might want to try out a few different colours for it instead though, see which has the better effect.

Hope that's helpful to you. You could try some of the other points I mentioned before, but these would probably improve it most (greying the background gives it a more sullen feel, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for)
