View Full Version : Teen Challenge #39: Themed Self Portrait
Evil_Sloth
December 7th, 2007, 01:11 AM
G'day you sexy bunch,
Participation was lacking in the last challenge, so I was saving this topic until number 40 but decided to unleash it now.
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic:
Themed Self Portrait, create a self portrait involving a theme, love, 1960's, Renaissance, kaiwaii, emo if you wish...
Please add a small description or storyline. We don't want a five page essay but make it nice, brief, and to the point. Especially if there is something in your design which needs explaining. PLEASE STATE WHAT THEME YOUR SP IS BASED ON.
Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
The Deadline:
Wenesday, December 21st at midnight PST
Two weeks. Going to unleash all the skills in the arsenal!

Maybe this topic will help bring people in, maybe not. We'll have to see. I didn't participate with the last one and others because i was occupied with my thread. But now that things have slowed down(almost even stopped) you can count me in :)

I'm not going to make any promises about participating as I've slacked off on the last two, but I was about to do few self-portraits again anyway. I too think it would be cool to see what everyone looks like.

Hey I'm definitely in, well this pic is now a pic of me and the people I'm living with but I will cut it down to just me for this contest (that was the way it started then I got carried away and thought it would be a nice idea for a christmas card anyway.)

But it'll be nice to see what other people come up with. : D

Me as a junky/degenerate-type. I only chose this theme because I wanted to make the big, dark bags around my eyes. I like painting colorful faces.
EDIT: I still might change it. I wanted to add a better background and I forgot to add some dirt and stuff to the shirt, but just in case I don't get around to it, here it is framed and otherwise complete.

I think I am going to participate in this one, I should have time. Never done one of these competitions so my question to you is if it is okay to render it with pencil (it wont be a countour or doodle, ill make sure it is fully rendered), as I still have not attuned myself to photoshop and with Paints I wont be able to make it detailed enough to be distinguishable as me.
Although that question sort of turned into an explanation...yea...the question is; Can I use pencil?
Jasper_
December 9th, 2007, 10:38 PM
I'm pretty sure pencil is alright. I'm doing mine in pencil first, then I'll try painting it in photoshop, or doing a grayscale. But if it doesn't turn out like I thought it would, I'll probably just submit the pencil.

I actually don't do drugs. At all. I'm 18 and I've never even been drunk (I didn't mean for that to sound so self-righteous). That said, I'm sure more than one would be fine as long as they're not identical.
On a side note, my art teacher saw me working on that today... I had some explaining to do.

and this gives you another reason not to try .....coz you'll look horrible man (judging by ur work - with those dark circled eyes n all ..)!!!! lol...

The theme for my selfportrait is "mechanical human being"
i kinda went to this flaming look because i actually painted my hair yellow a few weeks ago.
this was penciled in front of the mirror then photoshoped over the lines. my right eye has a locomotive mechanism wich allows it to travel around that opened part of my face eheh guess thats it!

vibhas_virwani i think in order to improove yours you need to add some more depth to you painting (lighter and darker tones) as atm it looks a little flat.

December 19th, 2007, 08:12 PM
okay..so the theme i was aiming for "rockstar" with a bit of a funny twist i think. kind of poking a little fun of those who think they're super awesome cause they can play expert level on guitar hero.
bit more cartoony than everyone else is doing.. ;_;

Love your concept, Stepherz! Guitar Hero is really addicting. XD
Here's my entry:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r315/Fettucine/SP1-1.jpg
It's about emotions, basically. I did it from a very basic pose without a lot of emotion and added what I thought was really strong feelings in words.
If this is not what you're looking for, whoops, heh. It's more design-based, and uses words to convey the concept. If the deadline is actually Friday, then I can draw another one if this one doesn't fit. :D

Woof, I rushed the background a bit to get it in on time (I work tomorrow, blah). I'm pleased with how this turned out. I chose the sad/bum clown because, well, I am terrified of clowns and I thought this would be a fun challenge.

im still working on it ....its WIP.....still got a lot to do ...but my computer keeps freezing ...... my theme is "scuicidal life " .... you will know why when you see it carefully ....else make your own interpretations ....
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc132/vibhas_virwani/submit.jpg
this is what i got from the one above :
theme is suicidal life.....if you look carefully ...each 'me' is killing 'myself' in the piece...including the figure which has the focus, by taking drugs.......thats why i tried showing the stoned face...

I'm just curious. How does my painting look in your monitors? On mine it's looks great! On the laptop however it looks over saturated, over contrasted, and choppy. How does it look on yours? And is there a way I can fix my monitor? I tried using a program called TrueColor but it didn't work. It's pretty old though, probably around 5-7 years.

Alright, I finally got something finished. I'm glad I did too, I think I really learned alot working through this one.
As for the theme, I was kinda going for some type of puppet or replica human being, a cyborg, something without a real personality
Deadline is today right? I just got some new parts for my computer, so I wanted to finish it before I went and screwed with my pc.
Everyone elses stuff is looking pretty kickass

Pyroclasm00: I really like how yours is rendered. Especially the mouth area! I think, though, that the right side of your face is a bit wide.
Edited to add: You kind of look like the Mad magazine/tv ginger kid.

Yay more entries. The more the merrier! :D
I was in mood for some comments:
-Weeda: Well you definitley got your theme right. Nice interpretation of yourself as a junky. I like those textures, and i think that background is just fine, it gives the whole piece more dramatic look.
-Arbu: Ive seen your SP portrait thread and you the are becoming better and better. Nice.
-Stepherz: Hey nice theme .Yes its more cartoony than everyone else but that doesnt mean its worse than everyone else. Definitely a nice twist.
-Linguini: Great rendering. Love the simplicity of it and the "graphic" feel to it. The words are nice addition to the drawing, and the theme is clear. :)
-addleheaded: Looking good so far. I hope you finish it.
-Jake Kobrin: Ooh that looks scary. You did the fire effect very well. And It looks just fine on my monitor, well maybe the face is a bit too dark but maybe thats how its supposed to be.
-MLara: Wow, that is just awesome. The colors, the expression on the face, the overall mood. My favourite so far. :)
-vibhas_virwani: Yeah the theme is pretty much clear. Looks nice although your piece lacks some contrast and depth if you know what I mean.
-Dutchdevil: Well there are some anatomy and proportion issues. And the face is a bit off, the eyes are not simetric and nose seem flat. But overall its pretty decent for a beginner, and nice theme. :)
-Rasga: Hey! That face position is a bit hard to draw. You managed to do it very well though chin area looks a bit odd. I like the colors.
-Clodioz: Hehe, yeah a hardcore cowboy farmer indeed. Only thing you are missing is a piece of grain in your nouth. :teeth:
-Pyroclasm00:Lovely rendering and lighting. Those cracks look great. Only crit is that I dont like how you cropped the ears, I think you could leave a bit of space so they dont touch the border. Other that than its awesome.
-yungks.ae: Very nice. I like the pick of colors. Eyepatch and graffiti are nice details..
-Sung-jae Kim: Simple but very good. Great colors and reflections. Looks bit unfisnihed though, and the theme? O.o
Evil_Sloth where are you? :xpld:

Ya the face was supposed to be much darker than the fire. This was sort of the effect I was going for. This was painted by the airbrush artist Henry Pyykkö:
http://www.mrdist.se/Bilder/helmets/Hjalm%20eldskalle/eldskalle.jpg
I wanted to only use it for inspiration though so I turned my hair into the fire and I boosted the contrast between me and the fire.

I'm probably too late and all, but I remembered about this half an hour ago, and decided to make a poor entry, just because it's better than none entry (?).
I chose the theme 'Artist'. As I've tried to illustrate, it isn't the artist who matters, it's the art he or she creates, no matter of it's a beginner, a kindergarten-child or a professional. It's the art that gives the artist colour.
