Hey guys,
Sorry for the delays... the finishing touches took longer than expected. We haven't updated the website yet but you can find the link here:
http://store.payloadz.com/str-asp-i.89294-n.NoxPart1_Video_Educational-end-detail.html
Part 1 contains a .zip file that includes his color wheel, a 50 minute quicktime, and the .psd at the halfway point.
Part 2 should be out later this week and will contain the final .psd.
Let us know your thoughts. :)
ENJOY!

Heya peeps, video is good so far.
If your having problems with the color wheel swatches, as in, it's not actually a wheel, make sure you delete or move the glob of PS generic colors at the top, (you can do this in the swatches preset manager), and all will be well.

HAH! I keep telling people that, and they just snicker. :P
Great video, very educational. Who said conceptart was just about tits and robots eh? Thanks for the inspiration!
One thing i wondered about is why you've bleeped out the word "fuck" in some places, but left it in elsewhere. (like around 37 minutes)
..or why you bleeped "fuck" at all, considering the subject matter isn't exactly fit for prudes. :P

Ok Got it! Reau figured it out. Go to the Preset Manager and highlight the first batch of colors until you get to the swatch before the first batch of white swatches, then click delete. Presto, you're good to go. Just make sure you resize the swatches window so that it's 20 swatches wide. If this bothered anyone else, I hope this helps. (Sorry if anybody posted about this earlier, to lazy to check :P)

Great video so far, one question: Does Nox changes his opacity at all, or is it all based on pen pressure. Ididn't know because of the speed whether it was just that fast, layers, or the pen pressure.

That was a really cool video. It shows that I need to be less reluctant about redoing things. He painted like 10 different concepts before he picked one he liked. I normally just work on one for a long time because I'm too lazy to do more than that.
And I feel so conflicted now! In Todd Lockwood's book he says that porn is completely unhelpful and useless and Nox says it helps! Well I've got a few years to figure that one out. ;)

Downloaded.
When I opened it in Quicktime it wasn't working properly. It was super slow even if I made the window small. Hopefully everything was all right in VLC media player even on fullscreen turned on. Pheew....
The video was great. I definately learned few things that I haven't known before. I also often worry about sticking to steps while here it was all reworked at every single moment and it still looked fresh. Amazing :teeth:
At the end I noticed the hand with middle finger and thought to myself: At which moment did he paint that? I wasn't paying attention enough. Lol.
The end was great . Thanks a lot for the video and swatches. :yayca:

Cool. The only problem that it doesn't work in QuickTime player (buffer overrun error) while Andrew/Jason demos works fine.
Considering video, would be great if you add more info on tools setup in future. I see Nox painting at 100% opacity while brush strokes aren't solid.

Considering video, would be great if you add more info on tools setup in future. I see Nox painting at 100% opacity while brush strokes aren't solid.
Leo, Nox seems to be using a very simple brush and he has just adjusted the Opacity jitter in the Brush presets menu in Photoshop.
This allows you to vary the opacity of your brush through the pressure of the stylus on the tablet, so you don't have to adjust opacity all the time.
It's a fairly simple setup which is probably why an explanation of tool setup wasn't included in the video.
As for the buffer overrun error, this means the video wasn't downloaded in full. It happened to me with Jason's video. Just re-download it, and make sure the file is the correct size when the download is complete.

Ok here is a quick review of the NOX part 1. FIRST OF ALL the download method is great just make sure your paypal isnt set to echeck method or there will be a delay.
I will start with the negatives since nothing is perfect. First and formost the subject mater. No matter what you say it won't appeal to everyone. which is a shame cause this type of art style can benefit the younger generation of artist and the price tag is great for high school students. Draw back number 2 is the actual use of photoshop is not mentioned ( no expaination of brushes, opacity, or settings) the color wheel is included but even that is not explained and to how he uses it.
Ok the art work is great and worth watching from start to finish. The editing is good ( no major jumps from on stage to the next). It is always great to see how art is work from revision to revision. The lessons and tips are great even to hear an artist complain about thier own methods is refreshing. There is a lot to learn from this down load with a great drawing to boot. The language used in the instruction can get on your nerves if you don't like foul language. ( something that should be considered, there is a reason most teachers and leaders don't use foul language it adds a bit of professionalism to the speak as opposed to a novelty). this is a definate must get Not one of the character DVD's from that other 'workshop' website cover as much territory at 5 times the price
-leo
December 9th, 2007, 02:00 AM
carotello, thanks a lot! You've saved me many hours! :) Yeah with 6-10% opacity jitter it behaviours almost the same way.
Anyway those tiny things may be obvious for someone while others would have no idea why it works that way. A good teacher always keep in mind that people are different and trying to shape the message so it affects everyone. Ironically the best painters aren't always the best teachers.
Personally I've found Andrew demo is the best: it's live presentation packed with energy, humor, tons of ideas and as a result it has tremendous impact. The rest is fine though it looks like artist have fun while painting and then he trying to remember what he was doing.
ps. The unrared mov shows 232 062 976 bytes and runs fine in other players (I use GOM Player).

I wrote short comment on the website.
As for the brushes. Actually this video is perfect example that they are not the thing that make your illustration good looking. You just take simple round brush and do almost everything with it. Just like when rendering with pencil.
But in case you didn't notice - he switched back and forth between completely opaque round brush (without opacity jitter) and round brush with opacity jitter. The first one for blocking solid shapes and second one for rendering.
Next day I started doodling something random in Photoshop with this video in mind and many things worked out suprisingly well. Of course earlier I was reading a lot about color theory and it propably gave some additional kick to my choices. The funny thing is that by coincidence I also had problems with stomach area and repainted it many times :P.
I think it wouldn't be so helpful without the PSD file. I looked into it several times to make sure of few things.

I echo the comments that the $10 downloads are an amazing resource for all artists. I hope we see a steady trickle if not a torrent of them in the future!
The Nox demo is inspiring, great to see a painter so familiar with his tools, working environment and procedure. Nox's commentary simply rounds it all off, and the outakes made me do a little wee in me pants. Great stuff once again guys.

number one...lol...there have not been that many sales...so I think perhaps the site doesn't get all that much traffic. but the support for being here on the forums is just fine...we will pay the bills this month.
Well, this is my first post here on CA, though I've lurked on the forums for quite some time now, and I must say that its a shame that you haven't had many sales of these videos. I've purchased all of them and they are all absolutely amazing. Each one of these has practically a whole painting course worth of information in them and all for $10.
There is one thing that I've noticed though, I've searched the entire Massive Black website and maybe I'm just dumb/blind but I could not find a link to these downloads from your website. I can easily access them from here on CA, but I think adding a simple link to the MB website could help increase the sales some.
Hell, you already have a new dvd/downloads page created for these so you could simply replace the current http://massiveblack.com/mbNew/html/dvd.shtml link with the newer http://dvd.massiveblack.com/downloads.html link.
Anyways, that's just my 2 cents. Thanks again for the awesome videos and I cant wait for the next ones to be released.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, when I first purchased andrew and jason's videos, while I was watching jason's video an illustration professor at the college I go to (SCAD) asked me about the videos and asked where I got it because she wanted to tell her classes about them and without really thinking I told her I got them from massive black, assuming that there was a link on the site to them. Since I cant find link on your site I don't know if she found the videos or not, but that potentially could have been multiple classes worth of downloads as well as anyone else they may have told about them.

From what i have seen of you guys, I think you are doing all you can to sell them, I guess you could advertise on the TV, but for 10$ that would be crazy talk.
I still have not watched this one even though it has been on my HDD for the past weekend.

Fantastic tutorial, love his style, thnx Nox and MB.
Just one little thing. In the intro you see weird lines running true Nox's face when he is moving. If you want to get rid of this, you should put Deinterlace on. I don't know what editing software you use, but in adobe premiere you can select this when you export the footage.
Here is a wiki article about deinterlacing if you don't know what I mean: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinterlacing

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for the positive response. We're extremely happy you're finding the downloads to be such a good value and we've got a bunch more planned.
Yeah, we're a bit slow on updating the webpage. It's not yet an official part of the pipeline but we're working on it.
The main footage isn't interlaced so I didn't de-interlace the project. I don't know what happens when you de-interlace progressive-scan footage... I guess it's time for some tests?? :) We've already figured out a number of technical issues since Jason Chan. Smaller file sizes, fewer compression artifacts, and we've just improved our setup for doing the voiceovers.
Cheers!!

ive been trying to use the colourwheel swatch while painting in photoshop, but I just dont understand how you are supposed to use it to get different colours and what its advantages are over the photoshop colour picker?
from the video it seems like nox uses the colour(f6) tool to mix the colours, but i still dont understand why the colourwheel swatch is so important?
sorry if it's a dumb question...
btw, its great that MB is investing more into these vids, just one thing, maybe you guys should have a 1 min preview for each of the vids to make it clearer to the buyer what they are getting? although, it is pretty clear already, but it might help!
cheers

^you dont have to switch tools or use any keys to change tools just for color. clicking on the color will automatically change you to that color, which is a huge convenience in photoshop... It also makes your color more simplified and pure because you limit your range..

just downloaded...yehaa!
Big thanks to nox and mb, for these incredible fount of wisdom and inspiration:yum:
...one thing (and i feel really retarded right now), i tried to load the color swatch.....before i deleted the existing one in the preset manager...but it's still no color wheel, just rows...........
"make sure you delete or move the glob of PS generic colors at the top"
...maybe I misinterpretet this sentence...but "the glob" are the existing swatches right ?
I really need to have this color wheel, i'm getting crazy with the color picker....way too much options

December 12th, 2007, 02:37 PM
do "replace swatches" instead of just loading it. it will make sure its coordinated correctly. from there, you just have to alter the width of the swatch menu so that the circle forms. the swatch menu needs to be 20 boxes wide.
after the circle is there, you can go ahead an reload other swatches below if for more stuff

thanks wesburt, but now i replaced it and still no wheel.....i know it's annoying, but if someone could help me out there. Is it possible that smth is wrong in my general PS presets..?

I have bit of trouble with the color wheel.
Ok i get that I should delete the previous swatches on the color managent
tab, and it should be 20 swaches wide to be visible, now how do I fix
this error here? :) I cant figure out how to make the color wheel look
like a whole, I have Photo Shop CS3.

That color wheel is so awesome, it alone makes the purchase worth it. I mean the artwork is cool too...but that color wheel is a nice workaround for something lacking in the whole of Photoshop.
Thanks x10! :D

Thisisimpossible, you need to fill in blank swatch tiles first so that Nox's palette doesn't get ramped into the emplty slots, making it all weird. Then load in Nox's swatches.
Also you might need to drag the corner of the Palette dialog box a bit. Let me know if this helps.

Looking forward for the 2 part
It was good to hear Nox comments.
Also it would be interesting if he does
another one in the future, to see the
whole approach he was talking about,
doing studies and working on the design
before attacking the final image.
My honest and truthful respects for his
artistic abilities, great artist :yayca:
If I'm not all wrong, I'd like to make a statement.
There was no studies or design sketching.
Everything is showed in the video.
But I might also be wrong.
Gonna download it soon!

woo just bought this one, it was my first download and I loved it, just wish I had the extra ten bucks laying around to ge tthe second half lol. Yeah I would have preferred some more commentary on using photoshop in general, like brush settings and stuff but thanks to the comments in this thread I figured out most of it. I guess it is listed as intermediate skill level so Im sure you're assuming that people know this stuff. Only other suggestion is that theres a lot of time where nothing is being said, Im sure you could just spout random good tips about photoshop or something there in addition to the stuff about your thought process. Great though, I loved it.

Thanks for the info DTRAN, I have tried the two things you said: resize the palette itself and filling in blanks, I also tried the two combined, and also I tried loading Nox's palette by itself.
The best I get after hours of resizing is this - helllp!

argggg... for those with swatch palette problems, get rid of ALL of the colors that occur before the 6 white swatches in a row (they are just the standard PS swatches), then scale the palette until the circle snaps into place. C'mon people, setting up these swatches shouldn't take hours, this ain't rocket surgery :P

ROMANCE: I've done that! the pics in my last post show Nox's palette on it's own!

I agree that it should not be rocket science - that's WHY it's driving me nuts!!!

I think the problem with color wheel is that photoshop's replace swatches function doesn't seem to work. I had to manually delete the default swatches(edit-preset manager-swatches) and then load the color wheel.

January 12th, 2008, 06:26 PM
ThisIsImpossible - Hey dude, even after a REPLACE of the swatches, you have to delete the extra stuff at the top. Photoshop's REPLACE function is NOT broken, Nox's color wheel just contains the default swatches and a duplicate color wheel for some reason. So just do a clean REPLACE, then go to the PRESET MANAGER and delete that chunk of default colors that litter the top and the duplicate color wheel thats in there as well.
If your still having problems, I've uploaded a clean version of it HERE (http://www.divshare.com/download/3445848-533). Hopefully it's ok to post this, if not, someone let me know and I'll take it down.

EDIT : Uh a quick question, the color wheel is a real treat in PS and all, works wonders, been laying with it and all.
But since my main software is Painter i was wandering if there was anyway i could transfer it over? or do i have to
make a color set from a image with all the colors from the color wheel? i really like how the swatches limit your color choice.
Anyways hope u got some ideas :)
EDIT 2 : Ok nevermind, you cant have duplicate swatches in painter so that kinda disentegrates that idea for me ..... :(
EDIT 3 : YAY! for all interested in having the swatch color wheel in Painter, i have this little tip:
When u got the wheel working correctly in PS, simply take a screenshot of your workspace, then paste into a new image in PS,
then cutout the swatch and save it at maximum size. Now open up the image in painter, if you screen is large enough you should have room
for the swatch image besides your working image. this is a veeeery user-unfriendly way around it, but hey it helps me choose my colors! :D
EDIT 4 : For your convinience :

Rune Rask: i think the reason he made this for photoshop as there's no way to keep the color palette open while working, not even a shortcut to open it (but we've all hacked it and at least got a shortcut). Painter let's you do this with a more advanced palette and feedback. My advice is not to get hung up in things like these.

Dont worry man, people tend to take things for granted... follow this steps to have the wheel in photoshop:
1.- Download the wheel.
2.- Open photoshop and go to "swatches" (in "Window" , in case you donīt have it opened yet.)
3.- In the swatches window, click the little ">" (up, right, below the "x" for closing the window).
4.- Click the "replace swatches" option and select noxīs file(wherever is that you have it, donīt expect to immediately see it, you have to find the folder... this should be obvious anyway...).
5.- Now, what you have to do is resize that same window (by clicking in the small arrow pointing down, right[ that arrow is there too, down right]) until the wheel is formed.
I hope this to be useful :D
