Edward Scissor Hands gardening for the mad hatter from alice in wonderland springs to mind immediately! a very cool subject, and the kinda wierd stuff i like to conjure up. I was gonna try and make time for the Herald CHoW, but may have to consider this instead...we shall see :)

jread, i agree with you here, its funny how people seem to flock towards anything demonic or evil, yet when it comes to pretty surreal projects, they run and hide, even though these more surreal projects are so much more open ended. Everyone should go and have a look at some Dali art, Max Ernst or possibly even H.Bosch. that'll get their minds flowing.

yeah its quite strange because when there is a tight brief, alot of people can go quite off topic and 'out-there' but when there is a brief that demands 'out-there' no one joins in...wierd! :P

I find it rather depressing
I giveyou something that isn't a generic castle or Space station and you all go into hiding.
Its a creative idea that requires a creative solution.

"City of Artists" was over Thanksgiving. Seriously, if you posted it up to do it again, you'd get more people. Stop thinking it was scary. :)
This one isn't frightening, it just requires more detail than most. Even I'm daunted by it little, I'm not the "absurd" type, but I'm still gonna do it if the time can be found. Hopefully everyone else will too.

Instead of due on Dec. 12rd, you should make it due on Dec. 12surd.
19 out of 20 people instinctively want to be told what to do. Giving them freedom is anathema to them.

Or it could just be a combination of LMS/CHOW. ;)
The later for me, but I might still give it a go if I find the time.

Hey Chaos, never fear, there are some people that are interested in this topic. I'm still brainstorming, I'll post something when I have something more concrete to show.

Oh and I should add I do have a concept and some sketches already roughed out. So with any luck I'll have the time to finish the piece. And hopefully others will too. ;)
Edit: Though I should also warn you I'm interpreting the subject pretty loosely.

this is probably the final due to not enough time... :((((
bc: 60 years ago, this island used to be home of a religious fanatic. One day he abadoned all his statues and just disappeard... A rumour says, that he died of hearth attack, when walking along his garden and his staues, because they loved him, burried him on the top of the hill under the statue of archangel...

Chaos: I must say I like the topic very much, the first time I read it I immediately had an image in my head thats now banging and rattling to get out. I really really should do other things like work, but I couldn't resist :). Also, I know how hard it is to come up with a new and spicey topic every time, especially if you don't want it to be the generic stuff, so thanks for this one. I'm already thinking how I can convert this to IDW now :P
Here's mine, lots of stuff still to do and little time to do it in :(.
Edit: Small update, still an awefull lot to do about it. Somehow I still manage to find some spare hours hidden under the sofa though even though some deadlines already cast their shadows over me :P

FINAL IMAGE (for now, I'm still working on it but just in case Chaos closes this round before I get that done, here it is):
Edit: FINAL version of my FINAL is up :)

Gardens of the Running Man
After the dimensional gaters where opened, this weird little plane in a backyard dimension hardly stable enough to build on was discovered. The island is surrounded by a lake which ends in nothingness. Sail or swimm to far from the coast and you fall over an edge. The statues in this garden paradise all give the strange feeling that the are running from or to something yet unknown. Frozen in their movement, these statues look almost human was it not for the absurd proportions and shapes.
This little paradise, unspoiled by modern machinery like the steampowered locomotives and petrol powered cars, is now used a holiday destination for the rich upper class of society.

I really wanted to do this but I got caught up with chow 99, *extension* ? I even missed doing the creature and I had it 60 percent finished, and I want to do IDW! and that is due tomorrow I think! damn there is too much stuff to do here....

Final, unfortunately.
http://fc05.deviantart.com/fs22/f/2007/343/0/9/Rinoculous_by_KeeleeHamomin8788.jpg
Rinoculous was the center of power and knowledge for many thousands of years before the dawn of humanity. It's residents were the inventors of grand technology which would later be discovered and claimed by the thieving humans. But despite the Rinoculians power, their city began to crumble and so to did the morality of its inhabitants. Civil war broke out, nearly obliterating the Rinoculians entirely. The survivors fled the planet in search of new life, leaving behind some of their offspring to watch and wait for the time to rise and take power once more....
dun, dun, dunnnnnn!
Unfortunately, I don't have the time I want to spend on this. This took me about eight hours. Now, what you have to bear in mind here is that I have never even attempted something like this before, so I would really appreciate any feedback anyone would like to give me. I'm not so good at environments. I'm more of a character artist. So.... I hope I came close. ^^

Very nice subject !
Here is a sketch :
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii178/iwantjelly/garden.jpg
"Deep into the furthest regions of the frozen sea, lies some strange structures emerging from the water. Made from an unknown and undestructible material, these walls are always warm to the touch as if an everflowing energy radiated from the heart of the massive city. Nobody has ever discovered neither the purpous, nor the origin of this strange place, and it is so huge and inhuman that mariners called it island of the absurd.
In the east side of the island is the garden of sculpture, a set of structures of more human proportions that are lined as a grid. Lately, a confrery of monks settled there. They walk among the inhuman sculptures, admiring their perfect shapes and meditating."
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii178/iwantjelly/island.jpg
update : that's as far as I'll go for tonight. Any comment or crits would be of great help !
No garden yet, no sculpture either, all that for tomorrow
Note to self : I need to get rid of that spot of blue sky in the upper right corner
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii178/iwantjelly/garden-1.jpg
update : 2AM, must stop if I want to go to work tomorrow.
It still needs some work and foliage, I won't be able to work on it tomorrow so I just hope there will be an extension...
If not, consider it as FINAL
update : my final final :
Hum... I liked it that way, and didn't add anything vegetal. Assuming that I don't fulfill point 4 of the brief, it would be perfectly understandable if you didn't take me to the poll, chaosrocks. I'm a naughty, naughty illustrator...

floating weird statues hovering around the island of absurd.

Shardana, I love massive floating weird things, and I like the lighting on your drawing. If I might do a suggestion, maybe you could add a little depth, like a foreground and a more detailed background, maybe it is a little flat.
I think you should finish it !

December 11th, 2007, 01:00 PM
Well, guess I'll have to push myself and finish mine as well now that CHOW is out of the way.
The first idea that came to my head when I read the brief was a rock garden. Always wanted to do one of those. Then I thought of the floating rock gardens of Ryloth and figured it could work. So the idea I'm going with is that in one area of the island, the power of gravity lowers exponentially based on the weight asserted on it. Thus, the heavier the object pulling, the less it resists. Which lets visitors walk around and along the little hanging bridges between the carved sculptures (which are huge).
Here's as far as I got with the wip early in the week.
http://www.form2function.info/images/island_study.jpg
It was just a small study I did to get a feel for what I wanted to do, before starting on the actual piece. I'll do my best to finish it today, but any crit is welcome. I'm unsure about the palette at this point and the vines still feel a bit forced (probably because they were). It's also a tad more cheerful and cartoony than I'm comfortable with, but some of that will go away once I paint some realism into the final.

merl1n: it looks kinda rough ( i know you said it wasn't really done) but i like where you are going.
iwantjelly : awesome. there are some perspective issues on some of the ramps, but the whole piece is awesome. i could totally see this being in some sort of lord of the rings type movie.
jove : i don't feel there are enough statues in it ( my eyes are drawn more to the ship). but i really like your style. it looks great. just not completely finished.

Agg.. this has some nice things.. but so many ugly details >_< I like the idea but my skills suck at the moment, I have to practice a lot more, I know :P
This was originally colored, but it looks much better like this.
Description:
Loki The Wizard of Lies endulged himself with a beautiful landscape, and filled it with images that evoke frantic action and mockery at the same time, naming the place "the Island of the Absurd". This garden the most attractive place in the Island, and is tought to have been Loki's favorite hiding place from the wrath of both Odin and his fellow gods.

AntiMatty : thanks, and you're right about the perspective issue : it's a little less revolting than the ones in my last EOW, but it is one of the thing I really need to watch out and work on. I think my piece could really look better with more details, more color care and some folliage here and there...
PutridusCor : nice ideas, like the two hands holding the stairs. The anatomy of the statue girl and monster is a bit simplistic to me. My favorite entry so far, it's the one looking the most crazy and twisted. Keep it up !
Jove : I like the composition, and these weird mushrooms are nice, but everything seems a bit flat : maybe you could add texture and details, and maybe a little contrast.

Not only were the monolithic sculptures ridiculous, but the garden was also absurdly large. It took days just to walk from one side to the other, and even though the Major had dropped me off at the farting statue, I wouldn't be able to make it to the Great Bull of Ludiocracy until sometime tomorrow. At least I would have some time to spend at F*#$ You Hill and Ass Mound Valley.
