I think the price is justified, if you look at it in the right context.
A good screen alone is worth around 1000$ and the biggest Intuos3 costs another 750$.

Also, it's not like a computer upgrade that will be obsolete after a year or two, I think one can get atleast several years out of a Cintiq if you treat it right.

There are more expensive hobbies out there and if you actually get paid for doing art, just offset it as a business investment against tax. ; )
