View Full Version : ****Zhen's Sketchbook (UPDATE: Tail Head Dragon)
December 3rd, 2007, 07:53 PM
hey guys, this is Zhen from calgary, AB, Canada. I'm currently a student from Alberta college of art and design. i like drawing and painting alot but didn't got much time to do a lot of sketches, but i will start to do that for sure :)
here, i will put any new stuff i got as well as some school project and some work i did b4, hope to get some critique, suggestion and opinions!i
December 3rd, 2007, 08:14 PM
not bad of a job uve doen there... ur just like me i guess - we like to spend alot of time on one piece no matter wat type of pic it is.
pic is still clear even with the sketchy look coz ur proportions r pro lol. only thing u prob should have done was put some highlights in ur hair coz it looks like u just placed black paint over ur head.
visit my sketchbook (gkrit's sketchbook) somtime if u like ... point out wat i could do to make my stuff better!! lol
(could u tell me how to do that "my sketchbook" thing underneath ur post so ppl can click on it if they want to go ... me noob :))
but nice work and post some more so we have more to comment on.
December 4th, 2007, 08:40 PM
i just started to do some self-portrait lately, and i will try to do more to practice colors.
I was trying to do some sketchy work since i always paint smooth things b4. i kept this one rough and no blending; i spent 3 hours on this piece :)
December 4th, 2007, 10:38 PM
Very nice start to this sketchbook, man. I like the variety of hues in the self portrait, and the muscle chart looks pretty much flawless. Excellent work.
December 4th, 2007, 10:43 PM
the portrait its really good...and the muscle chart looks very clean and accurated, nice lines..keep it up!!
December 5th, 2007, 03:26 PM
here's two of my school projects: Medusa mask and Muscle chart.
The medusa mask is the final project for visualization class, which is basicly drawing class, rendered with pencils.
The muscle chat is for Anatomy class, it was a big project and took so long to drawing it.
December 5th, 2007, 09:07 PM
this is a drawing i did a little bit earlier, i found that i really like this kind of theme. some of my friends ask me about the story of it but i can;t really tell, it is pretty dreamful i guess.
December 6th, 2007, 01:00 PM
Good start here. Very nice muscle chart. Looks good man. Now, keep on posting. :)
December 6th, 2007, 05:40 PM
A mysterious castle. this is a project i did for drawing class, after drawing this castle i colored it with markers; however i did not really like the final effect.
so i post the line drawing here and i hope all of you guys can grab it and color it your way (you can do it really quick and rough) and post it back, i want to see what kind of effect it can get :)
btw, if you want to change some part of the line drawing just do it.
here it is: The Castle
December 6th, 2007, 05:48 PM
Cool work draniel!
How did u get the perspective on the last one?? was it a grid underneath?
I need a simple way to sort out perspective, I understand it but you need a massive bits of paper to get in 2 point perspective any suggestions?
December 6th, 2007, 05:56 PM
Nice Stuff. Let us see the coulored castle. And keep on posting. :-)
December 6th, 2007, 06:13 PM
Thanks man, this drawing is from a drawing class, so it is done by perspective.
i did a really small sketch for the building first based on a perspective grid so that i can get the VP points pretty far away from each other, and then i use copy machine to enlarge it and did the details.
after that i scaned it into computer and narrow down the top part so that it gives a slight three point perspective instead of two point one.
Said: there's two really rough ideas i got b4, and i want to see how would other people color it though.
December 6th, 2007, 06:16 PM
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook, man. Looks like you have some great stuff happening here too. Your anatomy work looks really solid (I checked out your website too), but yeah, you can't really get too much of it. Keep posting man, I'll keep looking.
December 6th, 2007, 07:00 PM
I love the perspective on "The Castle"
The line work on the tree at the top is cool looking
And as for the color schemes your looking at
Hard choice, the one on the left has a good match of colors they compliment each other pretty well.
The right one I like the colors/blending for the clouds but the tree being green kinda contrasts too much for me at least
(maybe try making it brownish and use the opening at the top of the clouds for a yellowish lighting? Just a thought)
Well anyways keep it up:)
December 7th, 2007, 01:50 AM
Jfierce thanks, the reason i make the tree green is because the concept: everything around that area is deadly and dry, but the tree is the heart of the castle and brings it life......but it's just a first idea, so it would be good with any color :)
December 7th, 2007, 05:17 AM
I just finished a new color sketch, this is from a Chinese movie "Green Snake", this character in the movie is a monk that has a great power. it is a a really nice movie with fantastic story and beautiful pictures
you can go there to see the introduction of this movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Snake
this is the first time i paint something from movie, and it is fun, i will do more for sure :)
Monk Fa Hai
December 7th, 2007, 06:56 AM
Very nice update. I will have to find this movies to see now! HAha. :)
December 7th, 2007, 07:50 AM
very nice pic of that actor, i see u focused a lot on his face to look good then u seemed to have slacked off for the rest of it (unless u havent finished), but i guess thats wat speed painting is. however i would like to see a more refined version of it if u ever feel like doing it again lol.
just keep em comin and will surely take a look :P
December 7th, 2007, 08:52 AM
last ones very nice man, keep it up
December 7th, 2007, 08:17 PM
joaKimArt haha, oh yeah, watch it, it's great!
gkrit thanks for the comment, hehe, yeah, the rest of the part does look rough, I am not sure if i will refine it more or not, maybe i should do more other thing instead.
December 8th, 2007, 04:03 AM
i did a color sketch with D&G's perfume as the reference, nice pic :)
December 8th, 2007, 04:28 AM
The first one is great. You proved here that you can draw very well, and also that you can understand lght and put color, but I don't think I like your palettes very much.
December 8th, 2007, 09:52 AM
i like the imagery on the line drawing for the " castle " - very nice man - looking forward to seeing you flesh it out with some more colors at some point...
December 8th, 2007, 03:37 PM
Wow, your art is really beautiful! I especially dig that Shaolin Monk looking piece.
Oh...I just checked out the link for Green Snake. Im a HUGE Tsui Hark fan! I havent seen that one...I better find a copy. My fave of Tsui's stuff is Legend Of Zu. Love that stuff! My favorite comics are wuxia Hong Kong comics like Stormriders, Force of Buddhas Palm, Drunked Fist, Dragon Tiger Gate, Saint Legend, etc...
Keep up the great work! I'll keep an eye on your thread for more.
December 9th, 2007, 10:57 AM
me gusta mucho como pones el color por planos
December 10th, 2007, 02:45 AM
I tried ZBrush the first time tonight, and it was sooo fun, i love this program!
the stuff i create is the head of the Elf Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, the Elf Gollum was normal but the ring changed him and transfered him into an ugly monster.
My Gollum still has a relative normal look so that i suppose he did not get the ring yet, hehe.
I will do more stuff on ZBrush later :)
December 10th, 2007, 04:12 AM
hey man thought i posted in here, guess not
i'm diggin what you got here, seems like you are fast learner
that monk piece proves it
keep it up man
December 10th, 2007, 11:10 PM
some sketches from my sketchbook : )
the last one is a homework my teacher gave me: to grab reference from a movie magazine and put them togather and create some image (kinda like a drawing collage). It is quite interesting stuff :)
December 10th, 2007, 11:25 PM
wow ... really lliking ur faces! and now we get a better idea of ur drawing skills too ... which r way up.

December 10th, 2007, 11:42 PM
Great SB so far. No major crits, just would love to see some faster, looser stuff too. Maybe with inks, so your mistakes and planning can't be removed.
December 11th, 2007, 05:50 AM
nice stuff, keep it up!
December 11th, 2007, 06:04 AM
great start to a sketchbook.
ur paints are really nice. way to work loose with ur color application. that is how i try to work as well. loose in some places to build tension and then spot on in others.
nice start with zbrush
how old are you again?
December 11th, 2007, 06:09 PM
thanks man, i will put more :)
good idea man, i am started to do some speedy stuff lately, but i've been busy since it's getting close to the end of my semester, but i will do a lot of that stuff soon :)

the pen rendered "The Creation of Eve"
December 17th, 2007, 10:14 AM
great stuff! I am really digging that egyptian godess! the face looks excellent! the boobs look really awkward though, maybe it is because they are just a sketch though... the arms look stiff too! maybe they should bend a bit more?
looking forward to seeing it finished!
December 17th, 2007, 10:58 AM
the last one looks awesome man...sweeeeet rendering..keep it up bro!
December 17th, 2007, 11:59 AM
looking good dranny boy, never seen that first piece of yours. Long live VC.
December 17th, 2007, 02:44 PM
that "the creation of eve" piece is Wicked .... and this is not an ass pat man.. it's has that classic ness (adam's anatomy and pose) to it , and parts of it point towards a rather modern style too (eve's body is rendered in a rather alfons mucha manner) ...
that's hard to do man... really hard to do....
December 17th, 2007, 03:54 PM
The creation of eve is beautifully finished. Nicely done man.
The Egyptian Goddess is looking good so far too, finish it.
... and thanks for making me feel lazy with your last really solid posts.
December 19th, 2007, 09:42 PM
fixed face of Egyptian goddess... still need more fixing :D
December 19th, 2007, 10:01 PM
that egyptian goddes its lookin' fine man!...add another color to her eyes, like a deep green and a light one...
December 19th, 2007, 10:43 PM
Hey there, you've got some inspiration stuff going on! I'm really liking the Egyptian goddess, her face is especially beautiful in your latest update, hopefully you'll be able to finish that one soon. You seem to have a good sketching hand as well, your drawings (like the Adam and Eve one) have some excellent pencil renderings. Keep up the good work!
December 20th, 2007, 06:02 AM
thanks man, yeah, i chose green because the wolves(see the whole composition) beside her also have green eyes :)
Thanks :D i don't think i can finish the Egyptian goddess soon though, maybe it gonna take a long time to finally finish it, but i will try my best :)
December 21st, 2007, 05:52 AM

update, step 2
January 2nd, 2008, 02:15 AM
the new working i am working on right now. (i know i didn't finish the last few piece yet.....)
the characters are from the game Might and Magic Heroes V, they are Shamana, Sky daughter and Earth daughter. They sacrifice goblin to gain power.
It still look wired now, but i will keep working on it, hope to get some opinions and suggestions :)
January 6th, 2008, 03:07 AM
update on The Sacrifice:
This illustration I am working on right now is for an art contest held by a video game company. The poster is for their game Might and Magic Heroes V - Tribes of the East.
The characters are the creatures from this game. They are Shaman, Sky daughter, Earth daughter, and Goblins. They are all from the Tribe of Barbarian but in different status; however, these three high status soldiers (the girls) can gain strong power and magic mana once they sacrifice the Goblins during battles.
The Goblins are such a pathetic creature cos they are always sacrificed by their allys (the single eye giants in the same tribe throw them to the enermy for range attack). So in this illustration i am trying to show the comic movemt when the goblins realized that they are going to be sacrificed by the cruelhearted wowen.
I am working on it with PainterX, Yes, i just got it! the general composition is finished and i will work more on details.
January 6th, 2008, 03:11 AM

haha, yeah they are :)
January 29th, 2008, 06:25 PM
This is a marker redering project i just did for school, it's call "Fruit Land" - a children book cover illustration.
the main character is the "Dragon Fruit", (anybody haven't try it yet?) he was rejected by other fruits cos he looks weird and nobody knows him; he has to do a lot of good things to prove that he is a good boy so that he can be accepted by others :)
January 29th, 2008, 06:32 PM
HaHa those cherries are funny, can you imagine them trying to run around, and one going one way and the other the other... lol, ahem.. tickled me a little. ;-)
January 30th, 2008, 02:07 AM
Update on The Sacrifice:
did some more detail on this piece, almost done i think, and suggestions??
February 28th, 2008, 01:34 PM
what i would suggest here is to change most visually strong points (sorry about my engl some of my word can be picked here wrong)
what we starting to look at the pics now are the red\white lightnings in the up - then our eyes comes by the daggers down to the goblins and here is the problem - because the eye's are starting to jumping chaotic in the several place in the pics
what would i done is to make some strong accent in the goblin on the left (by the colors or condensation of lines)and at last on the mimic of feared goblins
but you can go some other way to - maybe chill out a bit the first strong point(the lightning in the up side of the pics) and make the clothes of the upper girl the strongest point?
many can depends of how do you put on the picture here the text so plan all carefully :)
February 28th, 2008, 03:08 PM
Hey Draniel, nice stuff, your have the skills bro, now keep it up.
March 8th, 2008, 05:07 AM
Nice array of work. Good stuff.
March 10th, 2008, 04:19 AM
Concept Art piece:
it's a new school project which is a piece of Concept Art rendered with traditional media.
I used Acrylic paint for this piece and it took quite a while to finish it. There's some anatomy problem since i didn't get some nice reference, but it's not that bad, i kind of like it and i also like the concept (well maybe it's not a really fresh idea :P ) When you first look at it, It looks like a romantic novel cover (and i was intend to do that ) and then you will see the terrible things inside the lady's body, then you find they are smoking and their love atmosphere is created by the smoke...yeah, that's the idea.
I will try to do better stuff later, and hope to get some comments and suggestions, thanks!

Book cover design:
This is a book cover design for a famous Chinese mythology story "NeZha Conquers the Dragon King".
The story begin with the commander Li Jing who is informed that after a three and half year pregnancy, his wife has given birth to something that look half way between an egg and a lotus flower. Before Li could strike the egg/flower with his sword (as he consider this thing to not be very natural), the bud open and reveal a small boy. Not long after, a sage named Taiyi comes to express congratulations. He names the boy Nezha and gives him a Universe Ring and a (magical) Red Sash and accept Nezha as his disciple.
When Nezha is seven years old, the area where he live is afflicted with severe drought and Ao Guang the Dragon king turn a blind eye to the offering he receive from the people suffering from the drought. Worse, he demands to Yecha (some sort of frog anthropomorphic daemon) to kidnap children so he could eat them. Yecha manage to kidnap one of the children before being defeated (but not killed) by Nezha. In a rage over Nezha defiance to his authority, the Dragon King send his third son, Ao Bing, to capture and kill Nezha.
After defeating Ao Bing's guard, Nezha manage to kill Ao Bing and also take his tendon as a reward. The Dragon King is infuriated and decide to plead his case with Heavenly King but Nezha is waiting for him there and after pointing out that it was Ao Bing who started the fight and that Ao Guang was lying, Nezha not only prevent him from meeting with the King of Heaven but also manage to beat Ao Guang into submission.
Afterwards, the Dragon king meet with three other dragon kings and together they flood, create considerable havoc where Nezha live and ask for his life in exchange of "peace". Commander Li is shocked and very disappointed that Nezha want to fight back the dragons but he cannot bring himself to execute his own son. Nezha realizing that he is indirectly the cause of much suffering around him decide that the only way to leave innocents out of his quarrel betwen him and the dragon kings, is to commit suicide so he cut his own throat by using his father's sword.
Taiyi, Nezha's master, revive him from death (rebuilt his body with lotus roots, leaves, and flowers ) and give him a set of fire wheels and a spear and he goes to destroy the Dragon king.

Hey, i just finished an illustration but i can decide which color is better (I love both of them)
can someone give me suggestions for which one's color i should choose? thanks :medusachow:
March 30th, 2008, 06:25 AM
Nice illustration, the use of colour in #89 reminds me James Jean.
I prefer the red version in the latest post, it's more harmonic. I like the idea of transforming those roots into human figure, implicative:P.
March 30th, 2008, 02:30 PM
Thank you for stopping by my SB :)
For this last illustration, I also like both colours :P it is a hard decision...
Hmm, if you wanted a more striking illustration, i would go for the blue one, as the flowers stand out more against the blue than they do on the red.
March 30th, 2008, 03:08 PM
i havent been here for a while.. and i can see a lot of improvement mate!...nice design on the book cover..keep it up!...oh and the cold colours one its the best...i think its more magical

hey, really like your work! for the mandrakes I'd stick to the blue version, don't know why somewhat more appealing to me! keep posting!
April 26th, 2008, 07:28 AM
That Persius poster kicks so much ass! I love the way you manipulate your shapes and tones to fit the diverse styles you have. Very great studies too! I will be visiting this skecthbook again *adds to favorites*
April 27th, 2008, 02:56 AM
great stuff man! Your poster designs are looking especially stylish. The mandrake roots and perseus are my current favorites. Thanks for posting in my SB too.
April 27th, 2008, 05:37 PM
The Greek Hero Perseus piece has a very nice, classical anatomy and clean colouring style - really suits the content IMO.
April 27th, 2008, 06:13 PM
I'm so new to this website, I don't know how to view your mandrake root image! It looks sooo neat, too; I love the concept ^_~
Your self portrait and that movie painting are wonderful! I love the colors :} And those are some nice heads you've sketched too!!! I can't wait to see more!
April 27th, 2008, 06:41 PM
You're awsome! You have so many different styles and they are really neat and clean =) good SB
May 5th, 2008, 05:05 PM
great designs and illustrations man. those roots look like they are having a hell of a time! and i do agree you should put a cooler coler somewhere there, like in the background or something. your website is also nice, very clean design. maybe the little flash enter button is kind of useless though, i'd remove it as a suggestion in usability. people like to see your work fast, specially art directors (or so that's what they say).. keep it up...
June 22nd, 2008, 10:18 PM
hey, Thanks alot GriNGo for the comment on my work and my website :)
maybe you are right on the enter button's opinion, but i still want to keep it as long as it could be loaded fast, because i think it does carries some idea about Zen which is kinda important. however i will still think about that :)

Character Design - Malice Do'Urden
Malice Do'Urden Information
Alignment Chaotic Evil
Malice Do'Urden was Matron of House Do'Urden until her death. She was a strong priestess and had favor of Lolth for a long time. She is the only known user of the power of the birth against her enemies. She was the mother of Drizzt, Dinin, Nalfein, Vierna, Maya and Briza. She also had to adopt SiNafay Hun'ett. She first fell out of the favor of Lloth because of Drizzt's actions on the surface raid. She regained temporarily the favor of Lloth by sacrifing Zaknafein as an atonement. She again lost the favor of Lloth after Drizzt's departure from Menzoberranzan. Malice never regained Lolth's favor but was given a final chance by Lloth to regain her favor by destroying Drizzt by the use of Zin-carla. She received the power for this spell by sacrificing SiNafay. She lost control of Zin-carla for a moment, which was enough time for Zaknafein to destroy himself. This caused Malice to forever lose the favor of Lloth and to be killed by Briza, in one last futile desperate attempt to regain Lloth's favor for House Do'Urden.
Malice had six children through three different males: the father of Briza is unknown, Zaknafein was the father of Vierna and Drizzt, and Rizzen was the father of Maya, Nalfein, and Dinin. When Malice's mother died, Briza, Zaknafein and Nalfein where still young, and Malice had just finished her clerical studies.

Good works you got there.. Your figure drawings and characters are so nice! The dragon concept seems right, only two things: I think you were trying to show a distant view to suggest mystery, but think that the dragon seems a bit far. Also you can draw something that serves to do a comparison of sizes between the dragon and the object. hope you understand me.
Over all it is a good work!

Great Zhen! It makes me happy to log onto conceptart and see your updated page at the top, and it's cool to see some of your work throughout our years at ACAD. I finally stopped lurking around here and posted up a sketchbook page, though I have a long way to go before I am satisfied with my quality of work. You are very savvy with your technical expertise
As for the dragon one I saw you working on during class, I'd have to agree with Ricardo there, more depth can be shown through a comparison of objects in the foreground, like trees or shrubbery (quest to find... a shrubbery!) Ni!
Use the airbrush tools in painter to get a misty, atmospheric perspective look in the background, right now the sky looks a bit grey and dreary. A snow storm would be more dramatic, like the dragon is calling upon the elements. Do it on a new layer and erase out a bit. There is also an airbrush that does a fine spatter effect, to get the snow to look closer in the foreground, to the viewer.
