More recent work at the end of the thread... but I guess that goes without saying.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hello. Firstly, I wanna say that I am completely overwhelmed by the quality of art at CA. I am a 17 year old kid and by NO means competent enough to post here. And to top it all I don't have a scanner at home, so my updates will be mighty less. I have gathered the courage to post here simply because I want to improve. Please crit my art if you feel it has some potential.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc180/vritraforever/Teddycopy.jpg

Meet Zheng. One of my more… er… creative endeavours.

A once trainee monk in one-of-those-uber-secret-Tibetan-monasteries, he suffers from an extreme case of vertigo. As a result, he failed his final test, which involved an annoyingly large number of creaky wooden bridges. Zheng’s subsequent fall to the ground had threatened to bring down the Roof of Asia, but affected his head instead.

Since then, he calls himself Protector of the Weak (not to be confused with Protector of the Week, which, as of today, is a weird latex tube used by aliens to raise social awareness), and vows to protect all teddy bears, big or small. Although some insensitive runts prefer to call him ‘mass child murderer’, we must sympathize with him. For, after all, as his spokesperson puts it, ‘teddies are as much human as you or me’.

Welcome to CA!
first of all :nice character design, but I think that the neck is a bit weird... maybe if you look for references would help...

some CA members take photos to their drawings... it could be an option if you don't have scanner ..

aps, and about the "potencial" I think that you have a lot of talent,,, just pulish it! :P

Thank you so much for the comment Clodioz. Honestly, I did not expect anyone to make a comment that encouraging.

Yes, I decided to keep the neck raised to give him a 'bullish' look. But it ended up ruining the picture. :nohope:

The whole pencil, inks done in just short of an hour. Pathetic, really. http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc180/vritraforever/Pirategardenerjpeg.jpg

Yes. He's a pirate gardener. The original logic being, every good ship needs a garden, and every good garden requires a gardener. =?

Welcome to CA :) I'm new here too, but there's no need to feel nervous about posting anything. That's what these forums are here for ;D

For your last speed painting, I think one of the issues may be with his shoulders and neck, as his left arm looks like it's coming directly out of his neck, while his right shoulder seems to much broader than the left. How long this creatures neck is may be a character design idea, however in either case, both shoulders look different from each other in structure. (I hope that made sense)

As for your most recent post, I really like the contrast you're using with shadows to actually help define the shape.
Please keep on posting :) These are looking great so far!

Hey dude, don't be so hard on yourself. You are doing great, and if you just keep going and practising your figures you'll be ok. You obviously have talent.

Radio24
January 7th, 2008, 04:14 PM
nice work in this sketchbook, theres definately improvement.
My first and most important suggestion/crit - keep a positive attitude. It will help you develope a repect for your work - hence patience, less block, and more creative flow.
as for your latest painting, it looks great so far. Try and work on the chest area, the pectorals seem a bit high and small, and the flat sternum below them is slightly awkward and unrealistic. working on the pecs will fix this. also, I'd define the abdomen a bit more, see if you can provide a more constant flow from the upper abs to the chest. I highly suggest using a reference to help you with this area as it can be tough - it is an obscure place that doesn't stick easily in memory. As for the rest of the piece, the arm and neck area look great. keep it up man

Radio24
January 7th, 2008, 04:37 PM
i did a quick paintover to better express my idea. Its not perfect anatomy - don't take all of it for granted, I'd still use a reference. I also noticed that the skull seemed a bit squashed to me- but i'm not sure. see what you think. cheers

Vritra
January 22nd, 2008, 11:22 AM
lacadam, thank you for so much encouragement. I really mean it.

Pixelturner, I am trying. I've gotten hold of an Andrew Loomis book.

Radio24, your post changed a lot of me. I'll try my hardest to keep a positive attitude. I am working on that sternum area. You were right, of course. The flow of muscles is hard to notice and even harder to portray. Thank you for your post. Thank you so much.

hmanafi, I will be working on them. Somehow it seems much more difficult to do foreshortened constructions on my tablet. I'm not as used to it as my pencil. But of course, my knowledge is absolutely limited.

Retronym, Thank you. I will continue to try hard.

This is a very quick sketch, maximum 20 minutes. The lighting was kind of referenced from a magazine ( I had observed it around 12 hours back). My pre-boards are on and it is getting more and more difficult for me to give time to my art. Thank you CA for so much inspiration and encouragement. Here it is in full resolution.

Right. My pre-boards got over today.

People have been telling me (and rightly so) that I should be doing more referenced studies. So to begin with I've decided to start doing studies of two basic kinds of things. Ones that breath and ones that don't.

Okay, I have a very bad sense of humour. This one is referenced from pbase.com. About 3/4th the original resolution I worked on.

First off, the self criticism, while humbling, is more of a weakness than an asset. Stop it. Don't brag, but don't prostrate yourself in front of the forum either. You have a lot of talent.

That said, it seems your talent can really shine when you use traditional media. Your figure gestures are very good. Much of the problem in your paintings seems to come from the transition of trying to use a Wacom tablet instead of pen and paper. It's hard to have the same control over digital. Something that just takes time.

Yes, much of your anatomy is flawed, but not terribly. The human body is very, very symmetrical. Make sure you're watching that eyes stay on the same line, that shoulders come out from the head at equal distances (based on perspective, of course) and so forth.

You have a lot of potential, both realized and yet to be realized. Keep working!!

Delmar

Hey Vritra...thanks for your comment.

Very cool stuff you've got here...youre sense of value and your painterly approach are very promising. I really like the environment...those things are great to get a feel for atmosphere and value (reminds that i have to practice that too :)).....

man, you're 17....there is great potential. Keep on studying the human figure and color theory...if you're interested...here is a very good link for basic color theory....it helped me a lot.

Man, lacadam, you're absolutely right. But right now I'm being forced to prepare my college portfolio, and so I have to do finished pieces. This should be over by this week. Then, back to good old studying. Need to improve!!

The more I paint, the more I realise my crappiness. A couple of WIP's I'll never finish...

I already said my opinion on your Lounge post, but just to add, here, I'ma give you stars for your excellent comic concepts. These recent figure doodles are good - try less figures per page, larger, and with a tad more detail. And keep it up!

I can already see improvement. This last torso is one sexy torso, but I think because you understand almost flawlessly how to draw them, you should try other parts of the body that you have trouble with. Never allow yourself to be comfortable--if you aren't feeling motivated to draw a particular part of the anatomy, that's because you have trouble drawing it. Force yourself to draw, say, the back of the leg while flexing, or the tricep as it reaches behind the body...whatever you can think of to perfect your already improving skills. You seem to have the handle in it so far, just, like all who view your work, keep practicing and you're bound to greatness. Good work, Michelangelo.

The value transistions in the latest image is much better than the ones in the portrait. If you want to avoid blobby values you should include a couple of soft brushes in your brush library. Keep improving mate!

i clicked ur link expecting pathetic skills. you lied! the rendering on that last post is amazing and the clean confident lines for the bones show you already know what you're doing. pathetic my ass lol

although, in this post http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=459969&stc=1&d=1221054662 you get the outer side of the bones off. feel the side of your own leg--at the joint, the bones are what take the outline on the surface, so your red lines should really go out there, and the indent where you have the
you know what, i'll just paint it for you, hold on

there, i hope you don't mind, im just trying to help. the orange is where bone comes to surface and takes over the outline (or like, form intersections or whatever it would be called cause it's not a line drawing). no matter how fat people are these parts of the bones usually come right to the surface, which is nice cause it makes our job a little easier :)

So I've been having these issues with my art. Mainly concerning how bad it is... I just can't seem to finish any art. I mean, I sit with it, and after a while, it looks hideous, then I throw it away. but drawing has become hard... somehow. I've never ever felt like this before.

Every artist who wants to be true to himself goes through that period...and not just once but many times in his lifetime..
you are not alone ..take comfort in that fact..
also know that any artist whos is persistent and dedicated gets out of this phase sooner than later.... so keep drawing and watch the blues die away.

about the art.. its nice to see you doing studies as well trying out different styles.... there are no particular crits.... in the blue zone ...just getting a rhythm is important...and also doing studies to help you get control... you are doing that ....good for you....
Keep updating..cuz I am looking bro

thanks for stopping by man, your stuff is great!! your linework is just unbelievably good!!
I was gonna suggest some more practice in digital shading and painting but i see you did a great job in these last pages!!
if I really had to give a suggestion I'd say you can try pushing the shadows a little more..and be careful with highlights, I tend to avoid a totally white highlight and use them really sparingly.
in that last study of page #6 for example its starting to look a little wet/metallic.
but its all very inspiring..keep going! :D

shardana, thanks a lot! Yeah, I see what you mean about the wet/metallic crit. I'll try to avoid that.

monotony, wow, thanks! I'll look after that hue shift in the shadows. Thanks once again for dropping by.

A couple of updates for today.
The first one is a quick sketch. And the second one a WIP, inspired by Hurricane's Viking thread.

Even though the first one is a sketch...the hand is drawn weakly... and also, the hatching doesnt make much sense.... dont stop applying yerself even if you are sketching... and also work on getting dynamicism and flow

Neat ....
The first is very cool...stuart immonen meets marilyn manson....
and nice stuff on the study ..some proportion issues maybe...but I think you were concentrating on values and anatomy anyways....
more please

Sketch, I hope it happens, man. I need improvement desperately.

Fox1987, thanks a lot!

bigfooTrooper, glad you like them. Thanks for dropping by.

mentler, wow, thanks for commenting AGAIN! Dropping by your SB is no biggie. You deserve all the attention and more. Love LOVE your studies sir.

Been down south to a small city called Vizag here in India. Thus the lack in updates. Here's sharing a few photos I took. Not much of a photographer, not much of a camera. But, hey...

I have NO idea why I'm replying after so many months, but still...

Shard, thanks.

dchung, thanks a lot.

Charles Ratteray, wow, thank you.

Well, now that I think about it... those weren't exactly creative responses. Ah, well, I'm overexcited about posting in CA again.

It's been a while since my last post, and honestly, I haven't done much art. So, not big on the improvement part. But recently, I HAVE started drawing again, so I decided to start posting in my SB. I feel that need to better myself. Actually, always felt like it... now I feel like acting on it as well. So, yes, there will be constant updates from now on.

Comments welcome. Critiques more so. I need it, so thrash me.

awesome man, really digging that portrait study. The color render is cool, i like the style choice in the clouds but I think some finer line work here and there would bring them up to the quality level of the character. Cheers!

Metal Fingers, thanks a lot. Really appreciate you visiting my SB. I see what you mean by the BG, but I was trying to meet a deadline and couldn't really push the piece to my limit. But still, I wanted to keep it loose. Thanks for the feedback.

A couple of colour studies of the female figure. The second one really sucks. :S

Another pass at the CHOW.

Also, I wanted to share something. Other than when I'm drawing on the tablet, my hand is shaking like crazy. The back of my hand hurts, and the arm is a bit sore as well. But what is bugging me the most is the fact that I simply can't stop the hand from shaking.

Can it happen due to dehydration? I think now the maximum temperature at my place is around 38-40, and the humidity should be well above 90. I'm drinking about a litre of water a day.

bhanu

Carpal tunnel syndrome doesnt really has much arm shaking to it. I think its just muscles trying to recover from fatigue. Do some contraction and relaxation exercises.
Like, Tighten/tense up the muscle, the relax it. Do it a few times. And also pay attention to position of your wrist. Dont let it bend inside much.
I hope it helps.

And btw really cool CHOW entry man. I would love to see what you'd with the BG.
Much love.

Your sketchbook has been a pleasure to look through and I'm very impressed. Keep up this excellent work. My only crit is that on this most recent piece, the toes on the figure shouldn't look like a bunch of individual sausages, they're pushing against the ground and will flatten out and smoosh against each other. It's likely that the only gap you'll see is between the big toe and all the others.
In other news: Smashing work, you're really getting this digital painting business quite well, makes me jealous. ;) Keep it up.

Great CHOW piece man, very nice presentation that I think will do well and get you some votes. I know your finished with it, but watch out on his left arm there. It looks like you were going for foreshortening but his silhouette reads like he's got a gimpy arm! Haha, nice rendering and colors however, good luck!

So first to your edited post from a couple of years ago...I think it deserves to be reposted so it can be in your current grouping.

I am writing about post 1. You wrote

For, after all, as his spokesperson puts it, ‘teddies are as much human as you or me’.

love it! re post it as a new post. it deserves to be seen.

Loved post 85, because of the raw energy.

I thought post 84 was good because of the execution of the pov.

Post 144 is awesome the juxtaposition of images and symbolic statements is visual poetry imho Hope you revisit whatever you had in mind. Its a story I wish to follow.

Post 160 the intensity of the eyes had a great feel. hope you have revisited this image. its too good to be at the bottom of the pack.

post 231...I think the character looks great. I think in the blades I might have wanted to see light, shapes, hints of things being reflected. The weight on the front leg the thigh muscles do not look like its weighted. I mean you have this intense, powerful, determined and very focused character who looks like he tip toeing on the ground instead of feeling like he is eating up the earth with each step he takes.

ok...thats my 1.5 inflated cents worth. I tell ya your original desire to post on CA has proved true. wow

But oooh la la, the body is painted superbly. Nice expression and gesture in the character too.One little crit would be that the feet dont seem to be taking the entire weight of the body, as if floating or something. But then again I dunno your original intention.

SUPERB man, you are getting there. Keep at it.

bhanu, thanks man. I noticed you called me a little bitch. Little? :(

Softskin, thanks man. Yeah, that guy is Hindu, but I don't think that should be his identity, really. We don't look at cowboys and say, 'Would you look at that Christian?'. Anyway, I hope you get what I mean.
And about the background, I kept it light to give it depth an to make the face pop. Thanks for dropping by. ;)

So my mom went out of station for work, so I have to handle most things at home. Spent most of the last couple of days cooking. In the end, I started getting disgusted with myself and got down to draw. I'll try to keep updating this thread daily.

And, yeah, I massacred this fairly good looking onion. Man my work is getting flatter and flatter by the day. :(

I love art, I love the creative process, I am not ashamed of my over the top guts pouring out with envy when I absorb not review but absorb a person's process. Some sketch books yell at me...some whisper...some make me envious...others I put on the back burner checking every now and again to see if the person has found their creative voice.

So believe I am not the only one who has looked through your entire sketchbook...I am just wordy...and not ashamed to express my guts in poor grammar.

sombertwin, yes, thank you for looking through. I may have worded MY guts wrongly, however. I did say review, but the strict professional meaning of the word was not the one I was referring to. I suppose I was relying heavily (and wrongly) on my own connotation of the word. I appreciate you looking through my sketchbook, you are more than welcome to leave comments. Thank you.

bhanu, fuck you.

Fumble, wow, thanks man! Much appreciated.

dleoblack, are you talking about the temperature outside? Yes, yes it is. :( Little monsoon showers aren't helping much yet. But thanks for dropping by.

So, yes, my mom was out on work. Turns out the people were unprofessional to say the least. They spoke rudely, paid not even half the amount, and didn't provide the housing they promised. What hurt most was the way they treated her. She reached the workplace only to find out that a person was already there to do her job. And on top of that she had to stay at a hotel where she was paying almost as much as her remuneration!

Anyway, she's coming back prematurely. It was a long, bad day. Couldn't even sit down to draw properly. It incites my irascible nature so when she's hurt. End of rant.

Crap...
