Hey, just updating... Started this at age fourteen, and now I'm fifteen - soon to be sixteen. There's a portfolio thing at the last page - I'm applying to Alabama School of Fine Arts. Wish me luck!

Yeah, everything for the first couple of pages is pretty old and to be honest I don't update too often, but oh well.

Go to the last page to see some better work! :>

You've got good doodles. I'd say you need to elaborate more, show us "what yer made uv". You seem like you've got a lot of potential. I guess school is in the way right now, but whenever you find the time you should draw.

And stoph is right, a scanner would help big time.
Keep it up though. We want to see more!

Was intrigued by the story in the "Drawing Development in Children (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112510)" Thread - and decided to wander into your sketchbook - I was pleasantly surprised, you have some quality stuff here and a lot of potential (sky's the limit for you if you stick with it).

"MUM, I want a SCANNER for Christmas!"

Heh...I remember asking the exact same thing when I was younger :) (I was 16 or 17 though when I got it :) ) - However I unluckily didn't get serious about training until my early 20s due to various reasons (art education is weak where I lived, I hadn't found any good online art resources until 2003/2004, and my family/educators weren't exactly supportive of my art beyond the superficial level :P)

Doesn't make you a nerd to know what you want to do - and then go for it. Trust me, it'll put you a step ahead of all the people who simply focus on popularity and "what's cool" in junior high / high school (not to mention, drawing/painting tends to have that 'cool' factor when people discover that you can do it well :) - even if they can't see the career options in it ).

-----------

Now on to the artwork.

I have to say the strongest one is This one (http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v155/221/10/886640270/n886640270_1819233_564.jpg) - it demonstrates nice energy and blocking in of major forms, almost looks 'Vilppu-ish'.

The weakest one is probably This one (http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v168/221/10/886640270/n886640270_1819557_9621.jpg) - mainly due to 'petting' the lines (which is less evident, but still present, in a number of the other sketches). Basically this means using short/unsure strokes to restate a line while drawing (it's ok to build-up a line, or do a gesture then correct the line, but try to avoid short strokes as they feel hesitant and harm the overall feel of the image)

Now, the things I notice in your drawings that may need some practice are - as was mentioned before - hands/feet, these are fairly complicated little machines, but can luckily be simplified for study. As you get more comfortable drawing them, they will come off as being a little less 'unsure' when being drawn (which is one of the reasons they tend to be drawn smaller than they'd actually be usually). Be sure to not forget the 'scale' of the hands/feet when comparing to the body proportions.

Also don't be hesitant to 'ruin a good picture' - always try and push yourself a step further, if you fail to hit that mark you can always start over when practicing/sketching (slightly different on commissions, but you're a bit young to be worrying about that). Draw that other eye, try and add that texture you've never done before, push yourself with each drawing to make something just that much better.

As for environments, those are very important to practice, I am a figure artist as well though - and I should take the advice of working on environments before I try and pass that suggestion on to anyone else :).

Best of luck, don't let anyone discourage you from art - you either have talent for learning this stuff, or determination much greater than others your age. Either way, keep moving forward and pushing yourself and you'll be one of those artists the kids are copying in a few years.

Peetaer- Thanks! And I shall "show ya whut ah'm made uv" over winter break. OHEMGEE I will have access to a SCANNER during that period! (Parents' office is in the town we're going to... :D WOOT!)

Diphallia- Heh. Thanks. The teenage population is steadily growing here, but somehow it hasn't turned into a DA. I'm so proud of CA! :yayca:

Alzorath- Wow, you gave me an incredibly useful reply! I agree about the strengths/weaknesses of those drawings. So, essentially I should be more confident when I'm drawing? I'll give it a shot... :) I tend to forget that there's an eraser at the end of my pencil. Heh.

I've been doing some hand studies... I want to do a few pages and I'll post some. I'll start on the feet, too. And environments. Tonight, maybe I'll try some watercolor landscaping and see how I do with it. I'll work on my perspective, too.

As for the unfinished portraits... funny story... Basically, the 8-year-olds that were swarming me backstage had to go onstage, and I couldn't exactly finish their portraits when they came back, because I had been swarmed by more 8-year-olds. Lol. I did like six other portraits, but they kept 'em. I really wish I could have shown them here. Ah well. :P

Thank you so much for your insight!

Metal-Mike- Danke!

Okay, I'm finally getting to update with actual drawings! [OMG, you gasp!]

I've got some of those hand studies and a little bit in the way of foot studies that I've been needing to do... I'll work on them more, though... Then I've got a couple of sketches and three watercolors...

We're doing The Bluebird as our next school play, and I spazzed out and went straight to the drawing board for costumes.. They're not complex designs, just silly little watercolors, because I don't have a ton of time right now. I think I'll audition for the role of the cat, too... Time to find a monologue! :D

Critiques are appreciated on absolutely everything. If it looks wrong freakin' RIP it to SHREDS!

Yo o:
Man, I never did studies when I was 14. I was just struggling with attempting to draw.
On Glennis's portrait.. I really like her jaw area, like the whole left plane of her face; it looks a bit more finished than the rest of the painting. I think if you'd've sat down for about 3 hours or so it would've turned out really well. It's just screaming for you to sit down and add the details, though I don't think Glennis would be as pleased.
And that pear is amazing. I'm humbled.

Otsopsanig: I am really glad you're diggin the work no doubt. I am also glad that you respect traditional works outside the computer unlike some other people I know around this cyber joint. I of course wear a respirator when I put in work and thanks for being concerned with my health factor, that's super duper cute and kind. I use it, as annoying as it is, with both spraypaint and airbrush. I don't want to have kids coming out lungless or with like 5 arms. To answer you question about the developement of wildstyle......That's just years put in to the streets and people in them. It's been a long long way for me to get where I am at now and I am still going. You can learn anything you want just be ready to lock down like an inmate in solitary confinement and put in work. Maybe not that extreme but be ready to put in a lot of time. There are many studies and styles to master and the only true power you have in the world of art is the gift of time. Again I am glad you liked my little battle field of photos and feel free to drop a line whenevers. It's an honor that someone subscribed to my thread, I figured it had to happen sometime. Glad it could be you and thanks for keeping it real sweetheart ;)

EvilBunny: Thanks so much for your input! That was kind of the point of the design with the curvy legs... Heh... I know that sounds bad to say "it's my style" but it was just the way I wanted her to be, exaggerated. I think I might to do another robot girl with more realistic proportions, though. Thank you for your support! :D

With your enviroment studies, spend longer on them. Look at big chunks of value and colour, get them down, then progressivly get smaller as you deal with details.

Helps me, at least.

Looking good though!

Hi,
some crits, if you wish:
post 64, the womans face/head is a bit flat. You need stronger shadows to make the form readable. The head for example is like an egg, so if the light is from above, the area under the chin is pretty dark( of course with reflected light if you wish), so is the area under the nose (simplified the nose is half-pyramidal). Usually the upper lip is darker too, and there is a shadow under the lower lip. If you study the curvatures of the face you can construct decent and almost realistic faces from imagination later.
I also noticed, that your pencil lines are more confident than digital ones. I suggest to set opacity to pressure , too, and make quicker, swooshy lines.

So keep at it, it would be nice to see some finished stuff.
Good luck,
Troll

Dished: Thanks for the support, and I'll definitely work on my line quality!:)

Troll: Ooh thank you so much for this advice! I've been having issues with realistic faces... I think I'm just afraid to shade. Hah. Thanks for your analysis! And also, again, I'll work up my confidence with a tablet... I've noticed that it feels like a pencil when I put a sheet of paper over my tablet and kinda helps so maybe I should start doing that again! Heh. Thanks again!

The gestures in the comic are very good and very funny 8'D 'Specially the being-flattened-by-an-accordion one.
That face with the orange hair is also really good, though to me it's looking like her head and eye/brow are facing slightly to the right while her nose is facing straight at the viewer.
Perhaps for robogirl, darker shadows here and there to crispify her, and maybe some shinies. Shinies are good 8DD

YOU ARE ON THE PATH TO GREATNESS.

Thanks, man... Yeah, I'm gonna continue it as soon as we hook up the computer it's on again.

For now, I have three light/shadow studies. They are digital, done in photoshop. The first one I attempted (the cube) SUCKS, but the cylinder's alright I think... The sphere, the last I tried so far, I think turned out the best. Lemme know whatcha think. Any tips? Any advice as far as light and shadow goes?

~Faust~
May 19th, 2008, 02:49 PM
hey there, I took a quick look through your scetchbook (It's not so much in there yet, that'll be my first and worst crit, lol)

Anyways, I was returning to those geometry-studies lately as well so I might share some insight I made myself: As far as the values go, I actually like the cube the best, you got a nice range of values there and it shows that you actually attemped to paint that thing by hand. Now just my personal opinion: I think the sphere is pretty boring, mostly becuase it is so apparent that you used a mask in order to et this round form. I know nobody of us will get the perfect circle by hand, bt you will never make decent ellipses unless you try to! Of course, you could always rely on selections, but in the end that will slow you down. Take for instance an illustration with 100s of ellipses! making hundreds of selections won't be an option anymore. Just drawing them like that (You will be able to after practice) will go much faster. Also, you will have a MUCH better sense of ellipses in space, becuase your cylinder shows that you do not yet get the concept. In there the ellipse on top seems way of, mainly because of the edge in the background. Well, i could be read as a table or something, but still the shadow of the cylinder is describing a vanishing point that actually leads to a horizon close to that edge. Thus, you cylinder is not a cylinder anymore. Also, you should do the same diffuse reflection on the cube and the cylinder that you do on the sphere, meaning let that white floor reflect from the downside. I take you made the sphere that way because you saw people doing it that way in various tutorials, like the peer project. But you should always think before putting something down on the canvas. becuase the same rules apply to all of geometry, nd that white splorch on the downside of the sphere is there for a reason.

Anyway, you're on your way to gettign really awesome if you keep this up. And I can tell you, those exercises can get really exciting when you begin to accumulate more than one object, do compositions, different materials and so on. A lot of stuff to play around with!

Take care, I'll be staying inspired by your progress!

May 19th, 2008, 04:34 PM
Whoa, say, Faust! That was a fast response! Haha! Thanks for the detailed critique.

I knooow, I used the elipse selection tool... Shame on me... On paper I don't (well, can't anyway,) do that, of course. Haha. I'll try another sphere, hand-painted. Just for the record, it wasn't a tutorial or anything like that... I was reading a book on painting... I understand that it's a reflection! :]

Now that I look at it again, I'll agree, the cylinder is pretty bad... I can't get that shadow quite right. I think I need to redefine where my light's coming from. I'll try it again soon, on paper. (I have done this sort of study in acrylic paint... I guess I'll try it with all my mediums and work with it.)

'Guess I'll keeeeep doin' these studies! That was very helpful, thanks!

hey nice sb you got here, i really like your style and your lineart. its nice to see someone your age cranking out works like this. i'd suggest continuing on w/ all the anatomy studies, also try to push the values and colors in your paintings a bit more to help bring out more depth and contrast. some of your portraits appear very flat and that can be fixed w/ the added contrast. keep drawing from life and its not a problem to use reference for your work either. just keep it up, don't stop drawing, because you can only go up from here.

one more thing, you have a good taste in movies/music/books. but that is kinda beside the point. keep up the good work.

I think you need to give this work a theme. Naughty I guess? Well, for starters, I'd change her expression. I like the smile, but the eyes seem sort of weird. Like she's dazed?

Anatomy wise, I'd be careful. Her legs are really long and you have a foot cut off? Overall, could use some more colors in it. Flesh tones have hints of different colors. It's too derivative of one color for each part of the drawing.

I made it past the first round of auditions for Alabama School of Fine Arts, and I'm going in for an in-person portfolio review/audition/interview. I'm psyched. It's on March 7th, and I have a month to pull together a portfolio of 21 pieces. IF ANYONE COULD GIVE ME ADVICE ON WHAT TO PUT INTO THIS PORTFOLIO< I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!

I'll post what I've got so far soon... For now, though, I'm working on my very first sculpture. Ever. Super sculpey and super sculpey firm... Wooden base and wire armature, with wire mesh, too. It's going pretty well... I've gotta get his hind legs worked out before I start really detailing him... Crits really encouraged!

Oh, and before you see those, I'm also gonna upload a couple of paintings... The first is a monkey king thing, inspired by a painting process I saw here aeons ago. I couldn't remember where to find it so I tried to recall it... It was, too, of a monkey king. *shrug.* I know, his hand's a bit wonky. The admissions folk enjoyed it, though.

The other one is another acrylic piece of Daphne and Apollo. I think I'mma do a larger-scale one with more detail using this as a color study... Maybe in acrylic. Or oil. Dunno. I just got some blending medium for my acrylics the other day, and I am itching to use it! :> (I recently spent about $200 on art supplies... I am not spending anything for a while. I need a job. Hey, you're stuff's not that awkward :o

Good luck on the application too, can only guess they want to see something that defines you more as a person and less as an artist at such a young age,
i.e your playfulness, willingness to learn, diligence!
I guess if you really wanted to impress them with technique you could do some Bargues or Masterstudies, then again that might backfire, as they might, as other universities I've visited, say: You're too "set" in your ways.

I guess the best thing would be some variety (of approach and subject) which shows promise for learning. Getting out of your comfort zone and establishing it somewhere else is always good for this.

That's the fun part about doing portfolios at last minute -- all this stuff and no time to fix it. ):

Good strong still life (the second one); same with the self-portraits. The first still life is a bit weaker since there isn't as much contrast, though..

The lion and witch paintings are really cool concepts, but the composition is a bit bland since they're placed directly in the middle. I do it too, and a critique I got (on here, actually) was a good test of the foreground: "...the composition is very static and there's no interesting negative space to speak of. It might work if the figure were part of a larger composition, but if there's just the figure I'd do something with the arms that made for a more interesting silhouette. If you black out the background and white out the subject and the silhouette looks boring, then the composition's probably not so hot."

Nice colors on the one of your dad--lookin' rather young, isn't he?
