Yeah..I know this is likely the absolute wrong place to put this, but it's needed for demonstration purposes for fellow cash strapped mentees from the mentoring thread..(you know who you are...)

I've done a few tutorials for Gimp in the past, and this is likely the UGLY-ist I've done, cause it's in a thread, rather than html'ed. Anyhow...

This is basically how you make an image b/w without changing the whole shebang to grayscale. You use layers!

This is Gimp with image in question:

you make a new layer by pushing on this button:

change the layer's mode thought this drop down menu...it's all the way on the bottom...

grab the paint bucket, make the foreground color either black or white, and fill the whole layer with it. Your end result will look like this:

click on the eye icon of the layer to turn on or off.
