Nice posts so far! Sparth, that character is great, looks part shark, robot and human. Very nice shapes. Bengal, nice work but did you use a drawing? I'm pretty sure speed paintings are supposed to be without a drawing. If I'm wrong, sorry.:) I like your first one, very animeish. I'll be working on mine shortly.

oh my, the thread is already kicking butt! :D
and: there is that awesome android touch in these, a mix of gothic/squeleton form. plain awesome.
bengal: don't forget to post the future funky rabbit bots outside of the froggy territories too :D:D:D
romus: iron giant feeling. a bit blury, but it really rocks. the tones are live.
mr T: i love the second "bubble" one.
sketch: for the first speed painting ever, you're doing great. you'll be able to make a more accurate design later on, but no rush, it's a good start already.
KP: true, second one is much more atmospheric. love it!
the analysis is very good on the upper one.
Grooveholmes: great! do not hesitate to add more details if you feel like it. true, it's important to go straight to the point, however, do not feel frustrated because you feel you'd have added things here and there, but couldn't because of the time. have fun.

Adam - it's speed, baby, speed! The softness is a result of adding medium to the image then working it into the color that is already there. In traditional terms, it's wet on wet. In Painter terms - the "resaturation" is controlled by the pen pressure, but the size never changes. This lets me add color with a hard stroke, then work it into the image with a soft stroke.

an hour 20 minutes. ouch, that's long, but i just couldn't stop! weeeeeez!
bengal: awesome! and sort of different from the others in your botrabbit collection.
Blankfrank: late thanx :D
Wetterschneider: ouch!! well done! the surgery robotic instruments are feel live and real.
cmortier2002: that's a good start. you could try to make your original sketch (if you have one), appear throughout the paint. it will help you to define the basic outlines.
Adam: both, rules and practice. :D but it differs so much from one illustrator to another. i have been drawing since i was 5. i'm now 31. but still, when you see 20 year old peeps drawing like gods sometimes, it helps you to see your life as short and exiting, (concerning art that is). it's really a passion.
rules: well, some rules i could give you. (very personal)
-try to always make a first basic sketch of the stuff you want to make, forgetting about details that may later appear, and most important, never stick your face on the puter, always try to have a certain distance between the screen or paper, and your eyes.
basically: you have two steps. step one, see the whole thing, and paint only the general forms. make the contrasts first.
step two: you come back on every area, and define the thing. but never begin to add details here and there before knowing how your illustration is gonna look like at the end.
ouch, long blabla :D

sparth that is gorgeous! the atmoshpere is awesome. it not only implies a sense of distance with fog, but it also looks as if there is a plane of focus! that is cool, i dont know if you try for things like that or if you have communicated it subconciously (which i could see happening alot with an experienced artist). great work, you are an awesome artist. i never knew, we never got to see much of your stuff.

Holy-smokes there's some great robots here!!!
all the different styles and "takes" are so good to see.
Sparth - thanks especially for all the robots
I've been wildly experimenting (for me :) ). This is a great place to do it. All of mine have started as broad stroke scribbles. I just scribble and erase and add layers until I start to see shapes that make me think of something. I'm trying new brushes and different variants, etc. Unlike Sparth, I have no idea where they're going to end up when I start. Sometimes they sort of work and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they're just odd. Along the way with the ones I've done here there were a few things I 've liked that may find their way into my regular work.

mcotie: nice. using a ballpoint pen is a very difficult task . don't even ask me to do so, i'll make the shittiest thing ever!
taff: very nice study really. nice tones, a atmospheric image.
aleksi: your own destiny was to come on CA and post your awesome stuff. it was written!! hehe :D

a few thanx:
even though this thread is theorically never going to have any end, i wanted to thanx all of you peeps who have participated, and who will participate in the near future.
AND: eternal thanx for having created this area, and making it live with your art and amazing female/scannerized/metroid/gothic bot concepts.
second thanx for ............. having inspired me with your black frame. :D
_______________________________________
on the last bots:
Death.By.Pencil: you're having a very nice rythms with these bots. you could probably try to stretch the images a bit. more viewing pleasure. i love the mechaturtle too.
sym7: last one is very atmospheric, very nice compo too.
the huge spider is impressive too. and yet the whole thing remains so simple, very nice.
sketchyjay: the visual "passage" is a bit blocked because of the thick black outline. may be best to keep a link between the background and foreground. keep it up.
jezelf: very rapid, nervous sketches. i love that barbecue anecdote on the last one.
ecsdesign: i just love it. foggy atmospheric electronics.
.:RAPUNZEL:.: second one is very interesting. with a mouse? oh my.
Wetterschneider: as usual, it rocks
oblio: this thing is the weirdest thing ever! rofl
Wizard of KOZ: try to maybe break the symetry in the next ones, for exemple, turm the bot on one side or the other, it will help. symetric compos are (most of the time, but not always) less interesting than non symetrical ones. keep it up.
great work peeps.:D

hi Sparth.
thanks for your comments. I don't really like my last 2 - espeically the last one - probably make some evolution of it sometime, though. Im not much of a speed artist. I prefer to invest in the time to create something rather than anything - my brain just doesnt work fast enough, as I usually question the concept's worth all the time, often scrapping images before they are a minute's sketch old.
I also like to challenge myself to do the opposite than is expected all the time - just to create a new idea new shapes - search for a new direction that is not seen before - at the same time make sure it makes sense.
Though Im crap at speed painting, it is certianly a good exercise to get the old grey matter working better. I'll certianly post a few more pictures soon.
it's good seeing everyone else's work - inspirational stuff.
cheers
jez.

I must say that this piece is not done to
do mockery or disprage of September 11th 2001,
if somebody think it is.It was joke about army robots experiments,
and on the flag there is caption which says:``It`s wrong town
you idiot!!!``
Sorry, maybe now this joke it`s tasteless.

Thanks for the suggestion Sparth, but what is the visual passage?
If I go for an pen and ink look does that mean the background should also have pen and ink or do you mean that I should remove lines all together?

Ok guys lets finish out the weekend with Robots, so anybody that has been lurking in the twilight this is your invite to get your robots posted while it still holds center spotlight.
the next theme will begin monday, Ive been in contact with my favotire eat poo regular and he will help me introduce the new thread. i wont tell you who he is yet but his work is one of a kind, and he really likes bunnies.
keep an eye out monday for his work and the new theme. but until then keep the bots a marching.

jezelf: wether the concept is good or not, it doesn't change a thing to the drawing quality. and the opposite is true too. incredible concepts can be explained with the crappiest drawing ever.
concerning both aspects, if you decided to create the worst piece ever, no matter how you'll draw it, there would still be your fine style and pro technique in the final work. you can't escape from your own background and professionalism.
blankfrank: i especially love this one.
sketchyjay: visual passage: can't really translate it properly. it's just that when your eyes wander around a drawing or painting, they follow the rythms given by the forms. if these forms are too "blocked", if they don't let the light pass, your drawing becomes too closed. it doesn't breathe enough. yes i know, hard concept to understand, and mostly, hard to explain. the fact is, the eye observing a painting is like the eye looking out the window. your aim is to search for light.
your choice to let the background free of any line art is the right choice. it's just a question of final rendering i guess.
davi: a robot a day forum would be fine, but i'd be scared not beeing able to have that andrew daily consistency! :D
cmortier2002: tx m8. :D

sparth - totally agree. :)
Im often not happy with my own work - don't think it punches through the norm enough. with this thread I lm trying to get away from 'humanoid' robots. robots dont have to be confined to the human anatomy (though you can of coruse argue that the human form as evolved for a reson!) - I want to explore ways a machine can look like with thought to it's function first.
I hope to get a couple more pics done later, after work, just for fun, before we concentrate our efforts onto another speed thread (mythological creatures? (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1310) )

LOL, Forgive me, caught me sort of funny. First a great painting, but what caught me funny was this. As a POrtrait Artist I have paintings that have lasted me months.
So when we do one in a day we consider that a speed painting.
45 minutes is not a speed painting its a blink of the eye.... thats fast, very well done.
BTW, just how fast must it be to qualify here as a speed painting?
