View Full Version : DSG 1308:Environ: THE DIRT ROAD TUNNELED RIGHT UNDER THE ANCIENT TREE'S GNARLED ROOTS

[ It might be beautiful, or it might be frightening. ]
[ Make it your own. ]
[ The walls of the tunnel will, of course, be a fantastic texture of twisting root system. ]
[ There might well be all kinds of tree fungus sticking off the insides... ]
[ Mosses... ]
[ Larger roots, like the legs and trunk of an elephant, and smaller snake-like roots... ]
[ Small animals may have made their homes here... ]
[ Is it being illuminated by sunlight, moonlight, or the glow of a torch? ]
[ If some of the roots stick out far from the sides, then interesting perspective possibilities crop up. ]
[ The view might be from within, or from without. ]
[ Always remember that if a topic seems uninteresting, then it's just because you are picturing a solution that lacks vigor. ]
[ ;) ]

1 hour in painter, will play with it more as I'm unhappy with it? I think I can salvage it, though. x_x I have issues tightening things up. ._.
Apocalypse_Rex : Lovely tree, I love how you've rendered the roots. I like the foggy treatment, too. It reads very atmospheric.
TheBeast : I want to slide down those. It looks insane...not exactly a dirt road, though. XD

Here is my first Daily Sketch Group painting, also my first fully completed digital painting ever. (except for an entire village missing from the original plan) 4 hours or so. I really wonder how people build master pieces in one hour! Was going to build a cute little tree village then got side tracked =/ I think I should have sketched out the village part before I jumped into the coloring! Covered up bad planning with lots of foliage =)

Apocalypse_Rex: Love the clean lines and perspective.
TheBeast: Looks like a lot of fun!
asbestoshazard: very foreboding!

1 hour in photoshop.
Apocalypse_Rex: great rendering - love the texture and the atmosphere.
TheBeast: Looks like amusement ride :) I'm a little confused about the perspective. Is it top-down or front-view? Very imaginative and unique drawing nonetheless.
asbestoshazard: the wet, creepy tunnel feeling is simply sweet. I envy your mark-making abilities - clean and efficient.
littlellama: speed seems to come largely from skill and style. I'm much faster than when I first started painting digitally a year ago, but I still get floored when I see people here whip out something totally amazing in a matter of hours. Your drawing has a nice textured feel to it, but I'm a little confused about what everything is. It's 1 AM now and that could be why I'm so easily confused tonight :P

Nightblue: I think I rushed it too much at the end when I started on the dirt road itself, and my planning was flawed in the beginning I think. I can see where I can help it by doing a bit more hashing on the roots and add more detailing to the dirt road to show the curvature on the sides of the road. I don't think it helped that the dirt road's lighting is so rushed too. I think I will leave it alone though and save it for next time. Btw love the serenity in your picture!

Apocalypse_Rex; Nice contrast between the tunnel and the outside. Also like your tree design. I think the front view of the entrance flattens the image a little, especially compared to the dynamic tree. A hint of what's going on inside would help perhaps, or just tilting the entrance a little. Love the branches btw.
TheBeast; You're making it pretty hard for yourself with so many light sources. Love the gleaming texture of the metal at the bottom of your pic though, how did you do that? You should also work on the atmospheric depth. You can have loads of detail on the front elements, but stuff far away is usually less saturated and more vague. In this regard, everything seems to be on the same plane in your pic. It will also give you some more focus. How you crammed all this in an hour is beyond me though :) I like your concept by the way.
asbestoshazard; Like the atmosphere you've put down. The gleam on those mushrooms are a nice addition. It took me a while to notice the outside sky and the moonlight on the left, perhaps you should accentuate that. Would probably help placing your tunnel in 'a bigger picture'. Nice job on the grass.
littlellama; Think you should texture those roots (nice texture btw) in a different way than the road underneath it. Nice to see a top view though, I can imagine it being pretty tough. Those fallen leaves add a good natural feel to your piece. Think it's hard to see which way your road is going. Also, I think the big plants in the front are a little confusing. Could be because the ones at the bottom, and the ones top left are the same size.
Nightblue; The flow of those mountains and hills is pretty convincing. Think the path is a little sharp at the end. There are also some white spots left here and there, not sure if that was intended. The grass at the feet of the rock in the right-middle is throwing me off a little. The rock seems fairly far away, but the grass seems pretty big. I like your idea of picturing the surroundings, with the tree further away.
dayglowdave; Great color palette, and very very nice work on the structure of those roots and the tree. I think sharpening the tree a little would help your focus. Also, judging from how far in the entrance is, you'd expect to be at the other end of your hill already. Thats all I can come up with, great concept ;)
ashton; Ha! a car going trough. Love the long horizontal shot, goes very well with the contrast between the tunnel on the left and the surroundings on the right. Fun sketch. Road perspective and car placement seem a bit odd. Perhaps it adds to the creepy feel of your pic though.
erniesthings; Afraid I don't own a tablet, so I'm not accustomed to pen pressure ;[. I like the colors you've used, unfinished though.
Hunger_Artist; Love it. Very convincing texture on the tree. Very loose sketch, makes for a nice natural feel. Pretty good use of textures. Think only the bottom left is a little flat. No real crits here.
Just what comes to mind, hope its of any help.
I usually refrain from checking the other entries before I finish my own. Think I deviated from the topic a bit this time around. Not exactly a tunnel.
Damn environments ;[ 1hr, ps, mouse

alright, awesome work all around everyone
I think generally for any environment it'd be nice to see a figure or something familiar (ruined building, old vehicle etc.) to give a sense of scale. For this topic especially it's easy to lose sight of the larger forms in favor of details...

Wow! Awesome looking scenes!
I have to say, dayglowdave, I really like the glow coming from the entrance of your tunnel. Very nicely done.
Nice root action Anthis, and with a mouse no less. Wow again.
Really like the textures you have built up in your environment Hunger_Artist. Very rich in detail. Yours too careless. Nice environments.
That's a real challenge to get the action look of racing that your going for in your composition TheBeast. Great idea. I'm not sure how I would approach that one either. Hmmm. Nice job. Will you post another?
Great root system going on in your Apocalypse_Rex, just like dayglowdave, I really like the lighting you've developed for your tunnel.
I really like the inner tunnel view Ampersand, the glowing mushrooms are great.
The environment you have developed is really nicely done Nightblue. I like the balanced composition and the way you've rendered it.
Great nocturnal scene rendering asbestoshazard. I love the dark foreboding quality of the scene. Nice textures and rendering.
Nice lighting implied with the shadow work on your post Hamsta, but as for the structure itself, it seems that the girth of the tree trunk suggests a weight that would surpass the dimension of the root system that you have rendered in your composition. I like the scene you've created nonetheless.
I like the developement of the root system in yours littlellama. The foliage on the left of your composition, although very nicely done, does seem to be an concealing/cover texture. Will you work on a more involved version of your village in a future rendering?
A very green scene SpaceRogue. :) Nice lighting and structure.
That is one awesome environment maths82. The vast space conjures the idea of a natural cathedral. Nice scene rendering.
Some really intense contrast going on in yours Ninja9. Hard to make out coherent shapes at this point. Maybe more subtle forms to suggest a smoother visual transition in depth.
Really like your scene ashton. The ominous venture into the vast labyrinth of the huge root system of great trees. Oh snap! :) Great theme.
Wow! aha JIVA*SOUL! fantastic theme. Looks like a wild adventure scene in a story. Very determined looking driver and his along for the adventure date/wife.. :) Great scene and render!

Apocalypse_Rex Dude... Your DSGs are ridiculous. All of them. You're too good. You make me want to quit drawing... jk. But really. They are the best I've seen. Good job.
TheBeast I like the road. Texture is cool.
Hunger_Artist Almost photorealistic. Really nice. Love the colored ones. 1st one is better to me.
Anthis I like the perspective. 3D looking (the blur)
Jiva*Soul Straight from a story book. I like it. Are they driving off the cliff on purpose?
Anyways. I need to do some DSGs. I've missed like 5. I do the next one!

Soo....I think everybody did some really dope, thoughful stuff this round- please don't be offended by my comments, they're all stream of consciousness and I think it's great that you're all doing this- that's the main thing, keep working. Please feel free to point out how I can get better technically if you have time. thanks.
-
Rex: I really like your birds. They look very real. Or are they bats? Your contrast of texture, value + saturation works well. I love your gesture. Looks feminine. I love the fog over the tree...I think u could've used a little more atmosphere perspective on the middle/top like you did on the left and right sides. Top feels a bit too sharp to me- seems to compete with your focal point. Nice fireflies near the lamps also.
Beast: I like your use of texture on the slides + plants and the manga-esque action lines. The glow of the lights is nice. I'd work on the design a bit more..it's hard to read exactly what's happening with the perspective/organics.
Abestos: This has a very nice feeling- especially on the left hand side. I like the way you handled the mushrooms and the backlight on the left branches. Nice low key painting with a a color/value contrast in the center of the focal point. It works! One thing I don't understand is where the light is coming from on the path way. It's not from the moon...it's not from torches...it's not from the person/object approaching from behind..
Llama: First of all- no offense- I personally hate signatures unless I can barely see it, i think it distracts majorly from the piece...I really like how you handles the plants on the top left, and the overall texturing throughout. Which brushes did you use?
I like your complimentary color scheme also...but I don't exactly understand how the light is affecting your piece- doesn't appear very even. Nice job though.
Nightblue: Ahh...very soffttt. Very pretty. Man, I love girls. I love the feeling...the wind...feels very Asian. I immediately like your texture contrast between the tree & the rocks. I like the warmth of the rock's shadow. I think you should think more in 3D- about planes and how the light is affecting your area as a whole. Using flat shapes as the initial block in, it's easier to determine how light is being affected. Also...my eye goes straight to the rock on the right, caz it's a very bright against a very dark. I'd think about controlling the eye a little more towards where you want it [the tree] with value/color/texture contrasts.
DglowD: Great job. Feels very complete. I love the overall color and tone structure. I like how your branches hug that rock. I would think about sharpening up your focal point and blurring down some periphery shapes to heighten the edge contrasts. Maybe take your flow down to 10 and opacity down to 20 so your gradients are more smooth. Nice background too.
Ashton: Don't know how long you spent on this...I think the drawing/perspective/tone is the most important thing to work on. I'd stick with that for a while...it's hard to juggle 4 or 5 balls at once. I do really like the colors you used for your sky...i just think that yellow is a discord.
Ernie: Cool Ernie...I like the effect you came up with. As a picture though...i'd think about your focal point...value/color/texture/etc. and where you want your veiwers eye to work on. As a test on opacity alone, I like your analogous color scheme.
Anthis: I really like that major contrast you have with the branch in front. Looks real, you pulled it off. The sharpness in your focal point is great. Your r/g contrast is great. I like your puddles also. I think I'd blur down those trees at the top left, and take down the value a bit in the sky. The upper left is distracting + pulls the eye away from your focal point. Nice wet redwoods feeling though.
Hunger: Solid. Your B+W is sexy as fuck.
The second color choice is way better...you don't want that upper level to distract from your focal point. I actually like the B+W way better...the color doesn't totally sit with me...I'd think about using a split comp color scheme...in your picture, if you're using b-greens and y-greens you should stick with a reddish tone instead of a yellowish tone. Try messing with color balance or color replace + see what you think.
Maths: Ah, nice feeling! Like the tone contrast and the edge contrasts. Really works. I'd play with color slightly and give your focal point a slight blue-green glow. Reealll slight. I like what's going on at the top...seems like there should be sharper edges/values at the foreground where we're looking in...and more attention to the tree at the lower left...nice feeling though.
Careless: Beautiful. Looks like my home here in Mendocino. As a fine artist...i really appreciate this. I think you could've used a slight increase on the value/edges of the roots to showcase them more...and it looks like a figure is down there...it's beautiful as it is...but I'm dying to know more about the story.
Ninja 9: I really like your style and your r/g contrast. Looks dope. I can't really see the roots though...i'm thinking that it's more like a cave...conceptually it looks cool, i just don't think it communicates the topic. As a dope piece to look at artistically, it works.
Ampersand: Nice job! Welcome. Beautiful greeny mushrooms. They look magic. I'd think about using a larger value range though all around. I like your little critters chillin up in the rocks. I'd get rid of those branches in the exit and heighten the value/color contrast for the focal point. Maybe soften up the edges a bit on the trees outside... and sharpen the edges/values on the roots/rocks closest to us.
Hamsta: That tree looks like it's walking to town to get a sandwich, straight up. Where are the shadows on the rest of his legs? I like that dark shadow in the sky and that breath of blue creeping out.
Muleskinner: Thanks for the nice notes man...I appreciate it. Assuming your a man. I don't know. Don't know many girls who skin mules. Or any guys who do it actually. uh nevermind. I like your blowed-out color effect. It's different and dazzling.
The tree looks electric- it's neat. I don't know where the focal point is though...my eye is confused...I want to hang out with that tree...but those darks make me come down...then theres that little mouse hole at the bottom...and the birds/cornuts crumbs/ eraser shreds at the left....nice work, overall I think you'd benefit by simplifying and sharpening.
Lady H: mmmm dope. Love your color choice. Ill. Love the subtle trees in the red background. Nice texture contrast. Almost looks like he's drawing a line in the dirt...cross this and you're fuckin' toast, fool. Hey Will, can we cuss? Anyways, I don't have much to say. I think the light from inside would be affecting the branches a bit more. Maybe have a new light source coming from in front so we can see those branches a bit more, just for the topics sake. But conceptually, like Ninja's, it looks tight.
Sen: Yea...like Llama's I can't deal with signatures...my eye goes directly to it...because the flowy design is contrasting majorly with those super straight trees. My eye just goes straight there and doesn't leave, and I don't think that's what you want. I'd at least brighten up that flashlight more. I do like your r/g contrast...i think your picture would benefit from more value/edge contrasting. Also...throw in some other shapes and some movement...looks a bit stiff.
Meli: Outstanding. I don't have much to say but compliments. Your birds/figures are dope...your drawing skill in on point...colors look good...perspective/atmospheric perspective is great...you know...maybe this would benefit with certain areas slightly darker...Looks great though, how did you start this? Did you scan in a penciled image first? How do you handle your opacity/flow throughout the piece?
Ink-Ronin: Hmmm...I'm going to put this in the "dope aesthetically but not consistent with topic" category. I love your texture...maybe balance the left side with more blue...feels too left weighty.
Psychostrat:
I like your composition. Minus that branch that hangs out, the eye flows around nicely. Your value structure isn't too bad, looks like it could be structured a little more evenly in the brights. I'm not sure the color is complimentary...I would mute those yellows a bit to make the color work together a little better.
Ryoken: I like your drawing style + your handle with opacity/flow. Nice energy and movement. Has a nice feel to it for a quick drawing. If you were going to spend more time on this, I'd add some subtle color + structure the lines/values a little more. Looks good though!
Peace!!

hey Jiva, thanks for the comments.
Sorry about the sig, I will keep it in mind for next time, do painters in general use less obvious/no signatures?
I used the standard round brush for the inky textures, then a hair brush for the long parallel lines. I think it's called a hair brush? Oh I also added a rough texture to add a roughness to the hairbrush for certain spots. For the highlights, it looks like I used a few strokes of 'Dodge' with a sponge type brush. Is that cheating? =)
Still experimenting on how to put together a painting, I guess I focused too much on the texturing and not enough on the overall perspective/depth of the piece, I am still very much a newcomer to painting, but hopefully learned from my mistakes with the help of everyone here and their super useful comments! I must be making such fundamental stupid mistakes on my paintings haha :sungod:
Soo....I think everybody did some really dope, thoughful stuff this round- please don't be offended by my comments, they're all stream of consciousness and I think it's great that you're all doing this- that's the main thing, keep working. Please feel free to point out how I can get better technically if you have time. thanks.

Hello, can't really comment because I'm pretty sore from yesterday's long work outside chopping trees down. Ouch! But I wanted to contribute badly. So, yeah... here it is.

I don't know how long I have spent on it, but I think it turned out ok. :) I need to be more confident in my coloring/values though...

welcome to DSGKroevyn, cool piece, i'm sure you had the basics of your sketch down in well under 2 hours then just got carried away tightening it up.
Dm7 great loose textures, the values/colour and lighting really pop the pathway out. great stuff.
PMaz sweet contrast between the sky and the glowing lights, think the composition is a bit sky heavy and swamps the lower section maybe.
careless i lurve that loose style!!!
JIVA*SOULcool illustration, love the swirls in the bark, and its cool that u take the time to crit everyone : )

I give mad props to JIVA, Ryoken and Apocalypse. You guys definitely combine great elements of light, color and composition. Also DM7, I like your use of color...maybe just try and tighten the lines of your background, or in my opinion, use the Blur brush for backgrounds, as it gives a good sense of realism to any piece.
JIVA: thanks for the critiques, as they're always welcome(I tend to sacrifice detail for the concept, my bad). finish that crazy mouse-ka-teers piece, cuz I'm diggin that illustrative style.
I promise I will try to adhere more to the topics...Keep on rockin' fools!

Looks like this topic is still running, so I've given it a shot... Any excuse to draw gnarly trees! Just black and white, messing around with brush and ink (whacking big sumi-e brushes, mostly...) Now let's see if I can make this image link work:
http://www.queengwenevere.com/queengwenevere/random-sketches/tree-and-road-by-Gwenevere.jpg
Ah. SQUARE brackets. Not angle brackets. Duh.
Some nifty sketches up here, I see...
Random crits/comments:
Careless: I like the color scheme you've got going on, but it's awfully hard to tell what's what... needs a bit more definition, maybe at least in the area where it seems like there's a figure going under a root?
Jiva*Soul: That is adorable. Really. I love the funky-fantastical style.. only crits might be, if the mice aren't meant to be killed, maybe extend the landing end of the bridge a bit more? (I didn't spot it til the second time I looked...) And, maybe it's just me, but the water looks oddly solid... too many lines? Not sure...
LadyHydralisk: eye-catching, that one is. Certainly a different color scheme, and I think it works...
senanimach9: couple of things you might want to work on for more drama - try for a greater range of light-and-dark, perhaps, and also try for more defined masses-and-spaces... this feels a bit too much like a regular pattern of verticals to me...
MeliHitchcock: I think that's one of my favorites so far. I love the baobab approach, and the lyrical feel... The colors don't bother me, really...
Ryoken: I quite like that one, too... a simple closeup, but it still gives a feeling of a unique place, and it says "tunnel" and "tree" to me, even with minimal detail...
PMaz: Love the lighting and atmosphere... the white squiggly lines are a tad distracting, though.
Kroevyn: oh, I like the lighting here, too! Especially the light coming through the distant trees...
Dm7: That's going interesting places, love the tropical feel and colors... The leaves in the upper left bug me, though. I keep thinking they look like venetian blinds. Maybe take them out and fill out the tree branches a bit? Or make them more subtle, or more leaf-like? Not sure...
Dr. Scribble: That's... rather creepy. In a good way. Not entirely sure what the thing running along the top of the tunnel is, but not entirely sure it matters either...

It's good to see lots of comments, thanks to people who
said things about my work.
JIVA*SOUL I like your take on the brief, it's deep.
It made me smile.
muleskinner You love that color palette don't you!
MeliHitchcock It's technically good but lacks drama.
TheBeast you had the same idea as me but did it far better.
Hunger_Artist looks like real watercolor, sets the scene well.
Keep on postin

Dr. Scribble; Charcoal? that's really done in charcoal? Really thought it was digital. I can see the push pins now though. Still, didn't know charcoal could do that. Crazy.

JIVA*SOUL Haha, real cute, I think the effort shows. I think the flat colors fit the cartoony style well, but perhaps they could be taken a step further in making the focus of the image (the mice, of course) pop out immediatly.
Ryoken It's not obvious that the walls of the cave are roots, not earth.
The illuminated extensions seem like separate objects, and not as part of the root system that builds the cave.
The lights need some more figuring out (shadows?) and I don't like the way the line art is so obvious in the foreground glowing things, but almost invisible in the rest of the pic.
muleskinner It's easy to spot one of your works, from the style and color, but I don't think it works every time.
Nice perspective, but it seems like the top of the tree is somewhat disconnected from the roots at the bottom - something in the perspective.
While I can see there should be a way through, I don't see a man made dirt path.

I think that was a compliment. If it was, it was my first, thanks.
I know it isn't really a charcoal forum. I just really liked the idea of walls made from tangled roots.
I actually have a lot to learn about digital. A LOT! But that's why I'm here.
(I also spent way more than an hour and a half on it)

I never saw anything that labeled this a digital forum. Quite the contrary, it's a daily "sketch" group, which implies the opposite. Continue to do what you're good at and what you enjoy at your leisure! (not to say don't try new things and challenge yourself, but you get the idea)

Arbu: Cool WIP, looks very much alive and storybook like, can't wait to see your final, hope we don't have to wait too long for it. =)
Arteater: Nice twisting roots, perhaps the road can be more progressively darkened as it enters the cave instead of just suddenly cut off, the downward slope seems a bit sudden.
