Requiem

At November, 2007 I have started my new fundamental canvas “Requiem”. This painting will be dedicated to my mother that died at this spring.
I think it will be good for me (and may be interesting for you) to show whole steps in the creating of this painting (such as with my last big painting “Terrestrial Grief” – see my thread http://wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406420)

It's really nice to see art like this still being made.

I'm curious to see what your plans are for color - maybe some cool blues or enriched oranges and reds in the stone?

I like the flower petals beneath the central characters, maybe you could take it a step further with some patchy grass under them.

I'd really like to see some stonework and statues in this, maybe with some hanging ivy or other plants to get more of a grand vertical feel.

I'm also curious about the 5 men at the top.

I think an open sky with some mountains or rising towers/spires behind them will add to their presence of authority.

The only real critique I have is that I think the sky at the top should be more open since I think the sky represents hope and the realm of the divine and an enclosed sky shows lack of hope and faith.

All in all, I'm really looking forward to seeing your work in progress so don't forget to take lots of pictures!

Have you ever thought of creating a step-by-step tutorial for painting different types of cloths?

I know many people on here (myself included) would really appreciate it.

I would like to explain some details at this painting.
Central group is me with my mother near the grave (as I have already sad she has died at this spring). In the figure’s drawing I try to show the whole strength of son’s love to his mother. It is a readers the burial service at the upper part of the painting and mullah (Moslem priest) between them at the centre of the group. There is the Koran on the table.
At the top of the painting you can find arches of crypt.
At the left and right sides of the painting you can see the life scenes.
Falling flowers are the jasmine (it is a our family’s flower).

I will finished this painting soon. Just after finishing I`ll show it to you.

Hi Ilya,

I was blown away by your website. Your drawings, studies and sketches look like excerpts from Da Vinci's codex. Your paintings are beautifully composed, complex and stunning on a technical level. You -really- know how to paint fabrics ;). 'Requiem' is no exception.

Sorry to hear about you mother. It's apparent in 'Requiem' how much you miss her. I can't think of a sweeter thing to do in her honor than immortalize her in a painting. My hat goes off to you.

Here is my “Requiem”. The painting practically finished. I think it is need 2-3 week to complete it. I think it is final position of the figures. I Just add more lightning to the central group into final painting. And some reflexes and semitones..

besides the fact that it looks AMAZING but I let alone give you kudos for haveing the mental patience to even do such a large/detailed piece ... I know your mother would be VERY VERY proud... I mean mine are proud of me, and yours is like 1000X better. :D
