MAY 21, 2008 ~ The best stuff is in the back! feel free to skip right to the last few pages if you want!
_______________
Hello, I decided to make a new sketchbook. I'm 18 years old and an art student at DCAD.
I have an older sketchbook filled with a lot of crap I don't like anymore lol, so I decided to make a new one with new stuff and some of the stuff I liked from the older sketchbook. So here goes,

here are a few more character designs
Eric Young
November 26th, 2007, 09:08 PM
The first one is my first serious try at a storyboard, its just a random scene from a graphic novel i'm planning on writing. The second it another random scene as well. I personally like them both but i'm open for any suggestions. I had to erase the words simply cause I guess i didnt write neat enough and it wasn't readable when i scanned it into the computer.

I was just messing around with this kind of sketching and i really like it, its different from my normal type of shading. I think im going to explore this type of drawing for a little while, please let me know what u think and any suggestions you might have on improving it.

Here are a couple new things I've done recently.
The first is a painting I did for my girlfriend, done with acrylics. Sorry for the crappy pic of it, i took the pic with my cell phone because it was too big to scan.
The second is a character design of mine, i was experimenting with colored pencils, something I rarly ever use and i actually kinda like how it turned out.
Please let me know what you all think of my stuff i love hearing what people think, even if its criticism lol.

I really like this one, Im going to color it I just wanted to add the line drawing of it first. I really pushed the anatomy hard ( even though it isnt human lol ) And i think it turned out good.
Tell me what ya think~

The Curehead
January 7th, 2008, 03:40 PM
hi good start here.i like the head studies.
I think you should work on the design aspects of your characters a bit more,to make them stand out a bit.
Like if they are reckless, they might wear less Armour or if they have a culture based on something try and bring that out.
for example your doing something with dragon/demon/bat wings on most of them.So maybe try an incorporate some of that into the design process; like by giving them maybe flame motifs,or dragon teeth, scaled armour, maybe make them utilize fire.
I havent given you the best examples but It could developing your designs could really improve a lot of these sketches.
good start keep posting.:)
Eric Young
January 7th, 2008, 06:17 PM
Hey, thanks for the comment Curehead, yeah I can see how my designs might seem a little comfusing. Thats probably because I need to explain them all better lol.
Basicly, i've created another world, with its own races. Humans, which are just normal humans. Yamsah which are the race i draw most often, they look just like humans except for the small bat like wings on there upper back. And Fiends which are basicly a monster like race. I've been developing and writing a graphic novel around this world i've created for the last couple years.
Thats why my designs are so off the wall lol. Anyway, thanks for the tip, i'll keep it in mind, I always apprreciate any comments.
Anyway, back to my drawings lol here is one more.
TOOLED!

January 8th, 2008, 10:51 AM
Hey Tooled, thanks a lot for the comment. It's funny you should bring up referencing because I just got a fantasy art book the other day that has a bunch of models posing in fantasy positions. I think I'll try referencing them. Thanks again for the tip, I appreciate all comments!
Anyway I'm going to go draw now so I'll have more to post later on.

Thanks a lot Iceman!
Here are a few women drawings I did last night, first are just some face studies, the second was just a study of the female body but then i developed it into a character. I'm going to finish the character once i decide if i want to do just black and white value or color.

i really like these bust drawing, i think they are turning out nice. I like the level of detail and accuracy and time i can spend on the face and head. I must say i can even see my own improvment.

January 9th, 2008, 10:31 PM
I agree with The Curehead - Some more little design elements would really distinguish you characters more - Go a bit more crazy with the designs of some of these characters and it will show a bit moreof a story of what they are about - But some decent drawings, will be good to see the next update!

January 13th, 2008, 12:11 AM
I'm back, sorry i havnt posted in a few days, i've been getting ready to start college again this week.
Here is just a line drawing. It started out as just the upper body but it looked kinda odd with just the upper body and arms floating so I drew in the legs but now I think they look kinda weird. Oh well i'll try and fix them when i finish it.
Mr. Gadbury- Thanks for the comment, I'll try and go a little more wild lol. I been trying to draw fantasy yet keep it realistic so I've been trying to mix up cultures to try and get outfits that are different yet similar to things in history. But i'll try and go off the wall and see what I get lol.
Carbono
January 13th, 2008, 08:58 AM
You got lots of designs but too few studies(and only face ones), i believe it should be the other way around.
Try to practice some anatomy, some basics, you'll see huge improvements quality-wise and time-wise when doing your designs.
Keep it up!
Eric Young
January 14th, 2008, 02:39 PM
Thanks for the comment Carbono, and i can see where your coming from. I don't have many anatomy studies in my sketchbook because I don't post them. I do my anatomy studies differently them most people. I don't really like the idea of drawing anatomy over and over so I made it more interesting. Every time I draw a character I do anatomy studies, I draw the whole character nude and draw all the muscles, then when i personalize the character into whatever im drawing, just erase the anatomy as i add clothing. That way I get better at anatomy, but I still have the fun of designing characters. It takes a lot longer to draw a character but I think its worth it.
Here is a character I started drawing, here is an example of my characters half way threw drawing them. As you can see I have all the anatomy, but when I go to add clothing I just erase the anatomy. I do this proses every time i draw a character. This character I don't think im going to finish simply because I made it a little too big and I can't fit his foot on the page. But I just wanted to show you how I did my anatomy studies.
Eric Young
January 15th, 2008, 03:57 PM
I finished this one today during my break between classes.
Eric Young
January 17th, 2008, 04:06 PM
These two are the exact same drawing actually, i just want to show you all how I do anatomy studies. First off I did an anatomy study of this character, as you can see in the first picture. The second is the same drawing but I personalized the character. I draw his clothing, layer by layer, over his anatomy then erase the anatomy away. This is how I draw all my characters so that I get the anatomy practice and still get you practice my character designs.
Edit: Please let me know what you all think, any crits are more then welcomed!

Thanks for the post everyone! I love hearing for all of you.
Retronym- yeah that prolly would help, and actually i have to draw 10 sketchs of people / living things for my Drawing II class so i will post them on here once i finish them, to see what you guys think
Sorry I havn't posted in a few days, i'm trying to balance my school work, girlfriend, and looking for a job and doesn't leave me too much time to draw anything I want, at least not enough time to finish anything worth posting on here. Anyway, i managed to draw a couple things today, the first actually i started a few days ago, and as you can see im not done yet. The second is a character design I drew in my school sketchbook while waiting for my 4-D design class to start, i plan on redrawing it in my personal sketchbook later and finishing it with either color or just value. Anyway tell me what ya think!
Edit: Um i don't kow why my drawings are not being shown, and there is only a link to them, but if anyone can tell me why and how to fix it i'll do so asap.

I had to do 10 of these real life drawings for my Drawing II class. I'll only post these 4 cause they are the ones i like the most. The first one is my sister, the second is my nephew, the third is me, and the last if my girlfriend.
My teacher said they were good but they were only suppost to be sketchs and mine were closer to finished drawings lol. Oh well it can only help my grade to do a little extra.

Great costume designs, how do you thinkup all this stuff!? the shadow work is really well done in some of your drawings and it really brings them to life use this cos it achieves a great effect! otherwise, stay fresh and original and keep them coming. peace ;)

Ruffy- Thanks for the comment! I usually look at history and ancient cultures to get my ideas for costumes and then i just combine them all together.
Sorry I havn't been able to post anything the last few days, I have been really busy with school work and havn't really been able to draw anything I want lately. But here are a few head sketchs i did between classes.

Here is an assignment I had in my 4-D class. We had a model do the jesture position and all we had to do was cody the pose and then create our own character. It looks, in my opinion, kinda odd cause you can't see the other arm, but you couldn't see it on the model. This drawing took me maybe 20-25 mins.

You've made some really nice progress on the proportion of your characters from the first page. I think you're really missing an important aspect of anatomy by doing only line version of the anatomy before drawing on the clothes, that way you don't really get to analyse the planes of the body properly and it slows the learning progress. I suggest you draw some half-naked characters occasionally too, so you get to practice really shading the body ;). And on the still life drawing for future reference I'd make a little more difference between the darkest values of the drawing, not all really dark is black.
Eric Young
February 23rd, 2008, 01:41 PM
Suncut- thanks for the comment! Yeah some shading of anatomy would help me I think but its funny you should suggest the half naked characters, thats what I have for you guys now. Its not totally finished yet as you can see but it's turning out really good in my opinion.
The first drawing is some quick skull studies I did in school.
The second is a character of mine, it's not quite finished yet but I plan on finishing it soon, hopfully today.

E, thanks for the comment and allow me to return the favor. this drawings got a lot of good things going for it, the angle, pose and detailing are all nice,
my only critique'd be that i think all of your textures in the drawing are treated too similiarly, i.e. the chair is rendered the same way as the cloth, the skin is similar to the armour and its flattening your range of texture which'd really bring the drawing to a new level. and you might want to hint at the upper arm behind his curled up forearm to push that depth a little bit more.
other than those i think its pretty fly. did you use any ref?

Hello everyone I'm finally back, I havn't been able to post in a while simple because i've been so busy in school and I just got through midterms. Well... finally able to get all my stuff together and scanned into the computer, I have like 20 things to post but I'm not going to post them all right now in one post, I'll do a few right now and a few later on today( After i get some sleep!!!!)
Movenski- Thank you for the comment and the kind words, And i totally agree with you on the texture I've been trying to work on how I render textures.
First pic (really bad cell phone pic) - It is a project i'm working on in my 3D class, It's carving stone, something I've never done before but its new and fun!
Second Pic -A still life drawing using black and white charcoal on grey paper.
Third Pic- I took my drawing that I did for fun and redrew it a lot bigger and added a backround, this was a homework for my drawing class
Fourth pic- Charcoal drawing of legs, done in class, took about 1 hour
Fifth pic- Charcoal drawing of the upper body, took about 1 1/2 hours
Thanks for checkin them out, please feel free to leave a comment, all comments are more then welcome. Check back later today for another update.

Here are some leg studies, not very interesting but it's something to post lol
Eric Young
March 19th, 2008, 12:59 PM
whats up, I'm back with something more interesting to post!
- The first is a painting I did for school, Its an experiment to play with the idea of dulling or nutralizing a color by adding either earth tones or grey.
- Second is another painting I did in school, its a still life and the experiment was getting dulled and nutral colors without using browns, greys, blacks, or whites. In order to do that was by mixing a colors complement (The color across from it on a color wheel )
- Third is a character design I did for fun. I havn't been able to do a character design in so long because I've been so busy, I was happy I could fit this in.
Please critique anything or leave a comment, I love to hear what people think.

Thank you Lateman for your comment, I think I've made a lot of progress too. I looked through my old sketchbooks from a year ago and there is a huge difference in my drawing abilities then and now lol. I guess my first year in art school is really paying off, also this website had been a huge help to me over the past year.
This drawing is a character design of a character i created, named Atacent Apollo.

Hi, thanks for commenting on my sketchbook. Looking through your sketchbook, I can see that you began it with a great sense of your creativity in your works that has consistently carried through.
The best part though is the progression in your anatomy knowledge, as I can see that growth from the first piece to the last. Keep up whatever it is you're doing, its working.

Character I am working on~
Tiago
April 1st, 2008, 09:07 PM
There has definetly been progress from the first few sketches but I have to agree with most of the coments about working from real life observation and anatomy studies. Like Suncut said, sometimes just the lines just aren't enough. The ones you did are a good start but you should keep doing them.
One of the turning points for me as far as drawing characters was when i took an anatomy class back in highschool. It had nothing to do with art, but learning about the muscles, what each was and how they connected and worked together made a really big difference for me. I'm not saying it will work for everyone or even that you need to take an actual anatomy class, just keep working on the anatomy studies and anything from life.
The design of the characters is one of your stronger points but the anatomy shortfalls are holding them back in a way.
Cocaine posted that there was somethign awkward with your drawings. I'm not sure if this is it, but the faces sometimes seem a little too wide, or in the ones where they are facing to the side the jawline is too long. On the females the torso seems too wide in comparison to the legs and the legs also seem a bit short. For the eyes and nose you also don't have to draw every detail to make it realistic.
Other people criticizing your work is helpful but one of the biggest parts in improving is noticing for yourself what seems off about drawings and then correcting whatever that happens to be.
I hope you don't mind me doing this quick drawover. My version isn't perfect either but a lot of the time it's easier to see something than have it explained.
Eric Young
April 2nd, 2008, 09:10 PM
Tiago- Thank you for the very detailed critique! I can see what you're talking about. I am working on my anatomy skills, most of it is through school in my drawing class.
On the critique of my character design you drew for me, I really appreciate you going through the trouble of doing that for me, I agree on a few things and others I'm not too sure about. I can definatly see how my jaw bone is a little too big. And on the hand, I figured it wasn't perfect, I redrew the hand like 4 times and that seemed to work the best. And the relaxed arm, you drew the arm pretty much in the exact spot it already is. I guess it's hard too see under the clothing. The one thing I don't agree with is your drawing of the waist, I didn't want to draw her that skinny because she isn't a model, she is a fighter/warrior and I don't think a female warrior would be that skinny. But I appreciate you giving me such a detailed critique and spending so much time on trying to help me! Thanks again.
Tiago
April 3rd, 2008, 01:14 AM
Your welcome. I really like the way you design your armors and it would be a shame for some of that to be overlooked because something else in the drawing is looking odd.
The arm I just did to see for myself if it was positioned right with how I had done her upper body and not because you had done anything wrong with it. I guess I should have erased it after i saw that it was fine. :P
The other option if you don't want the skinny model look is to bulk up the legs and arms a bit to match that torso. Like I said, my versions weren't perfect either and I was just trying to get the torso to match the legs and arms.
For drawing hands, something that can be helpful is looking at your own if you have doubts or think that something you have on the page looks awkward. Regardless of if your drawing male or female hands the basic structure will be the same and should give you an idea of what is off and how to correct it. This will also work for other parts of the body, but for the hands its probably the easiest since they are right there in front of you.

Second- The interior of my bedroom, was a homework assignment I did for my drawing class. Done 18"X24" with charcoal. ( 1.5 hour drawing)
Third- Cityscape done 18"x24" with charcoal (3 hour drawing)
fourth- Female model done 18"X24" with charcoal ( 2 hour drawing)
Fifth- Male Model done 18"x12" with charcoal, (15 min drawing)

It is good to see you working on life drawings. They all came out prett good. I also like how the hippo came out. As far as crits, the legs on the pirate are in a strange position. I'm assuming the long neck on the head studies was intentional.
Eric Young
April 27th, 2008, 12:30 AM
Thanks for the post Tiago, yeah the pirate is in an odd position, that was my intent. I kinda got tired of the standing pose I do a lot so i wanted to try drawing a character kinda caught in the middle of a twisted movement. And yes the long neck on the head design was intentional.

My final project for my 3D design II class, its a lifesize suit of armor I made out of duct tape. All it is, is many, many layers of duct tape. I used over 1100 feet of duct tape makeing this. Then I put a chrome colored duct tape over the top for a metal-like finish.

Hey, I'm back, expect more from now on, now that im out of school for the summer i'll have tons of time to post my stuff.
- My girlfriend baught me a set of prismacolor markers for our year anniversary, so I was up all night playing with them. I think it turned out pretty well for my first attempt with markers. If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear them. Also if anyone knows what colors make a good skin tone I'd like to know. The skin tone i made here is a little too dark then what i was going for.

First-fifth: This is a comic i had to do for my 4D class, Sorry if you cant read the words, I had to take the pic on my cell phone since the pages are too big to scan... its on 11"x14" paper and my scanner is only 9"x11"... but even without reading the words i think you can still understand the story.
sixth: another drawing i did, trying to get used to these prismacolor markers, i'm still having trouble mixing a good skin tone...
PLease and comment or suggestions you may have i'd love to hear them.

I was looking at some of Gustave Dore's and Durer's engravings and inspired me to do some pen and ink drawings. I also wanted to experiment with the pen and ink style and mix it with prismacolor marker.
First - I drew a character from one of Dore's illustrations for the inferno, it's the man who takes the souls over the river styx.
Second - a creature concept i did using pen and ink.
Third - a small little demon figure i drew from another of Dore's illustrations. I then added my signature and took a toothbrush and some ink and added the ink spray.
Fourth - I did the samthing as the one above this. I used my sign insted of my signature.
Leave a comment please and i'll return the favor, Thx for looking!

;1607324']Thanks for the comment Carbono, and i can see where your coming from.
Impressive character design [E], I dig the great amount of detail you put into your characters. At first I though, "how does he come up with the details?" But as I read more I see they come from the graphic novel you're penning. I've thought of doing that myself. I have such a wild imagination I often think I should write along with my drawings :^^:
I'm focused on anatomy studies right now, but I think I'll try my hand at your style of character design...incorporating that with my anatomy studies should definitely make my portfolio and my studies more exciting.
My advise would be to keep going, you're doing great. Keep up the anatomy studies and character designs--especially while you're in art school. I'm 26, married and have a day job...let me tell you, time to create is a lot harder to come by when you have a day job outside of the creative industry. Treasure the time to create you have and try to get a job in our field.
Great job so far!

;1651144']A character drawing of mine
Characters name is Mettah.
Please any crit would be greatly appreciated!
Here's a crit for your Mettah character design :^^:
I think your proportions are done well, and I like his costume design. I would say you need to pay special attention to weight. If one leg is up in the air, then the other is obviously carrying most of the weight. This isn't getting communicated as well as it could be. I would suggest using value to aid you there, and perhaps exaggerating the pose a bit more. If one side is weighted, then he'd be leaning more to that side, yes?
Hope that helps. Awesome sketchbook, I subscribed. Keep it up, your work is inspiring :D
Augmenton
May 16th, 2008, 12:02 AM
Very nice drawings. I really like the detail you put into your work. Just a few suggestions, though. You should try working on your line quality - vary the thickness and how dark your lines are to add weight and dimension. Also, the anatomy is off in several areas (I know, it's hard...I have a ton of trouble with anatomy!) Aside from that, you're on the right track, I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Thank you CecelyV, Lakka, and Augmenton for all of your comments! I really appreciate so much feedback on my sketchbook! I agree with everything you all said, I know my anatomy is not perfect and i really need to work more on my female anatomy and line weight is something i always seem to forget about when im drawing but i've been trying to incorperate it in my characters. Thanks again for the comments!
First - i colored the drawing i posted last
second - pen and ink of another character of mine, the character is ment to appear young he is only about 12 - 13.
Third - i then colored the drawing with prosmacolor marker! ( yes the skin is colored, its a very light gray.)

compliment on the dresses and drapery - very believable and well thought. your anatomy is a little symbolic f.e. the arm muscles you draw, but nothing that won't improve with practice and study. use reference for the poses and don't forget the perspective.
your drawing has a very nice etching-quality that i like

Kfeeras - Thank you for the comment and the critique, I'm always glad to hear people like my stuff!
First - I finally finished this drawing! I really like how it came out. The only thing that pissed me off was that at the very end of drawing it my pen dripped a drop of ink on the piller he is next to... i painted over it with white gouche and then re inked and markered it, you can sort of still see the patch.
Second - I recognized i needed some more work on my female anatomy so I did some female figure drawings from some nude photos.
Third - another figure drawing, the face isn't perfect, i didnt spend much time on it.
Fourth - an extremely quick design idea, for CHOW, i wanted to sketch real quick before i passed out. Took about 2 mins total.

Hi, your drawings are really nice :)
Heres a critique if you want, im not sure if you paint like that on purpose, as your style or not, but i think that you should try painting something from real life, or a photo, to get a feeling of how things actually look colored, it will make your coloring look more realistic. I dont have experience using markers to color, so i cant give you any tips using that, maybe you should try changing mediumds to color to make your life easier, try acrylics or oils, they seems simpler to learn to color in my opinion since you can see more clearly the color relationships, the values and the saturations of colors.
Ok, keep it up!, Jesus bless you.
edit: By the way, loomis has written a good book on how to color, Here http://www.fineart.sk/index.php?s=136&cat=13
You should also read "Succesfull drawing" by Loomis too, to resfresh your knowledge on how to light objects.

Eric Young
May 27th, 2008, 01:36 AM
Christian223 - Thanks for the crit. And to answer your question, yes i do paint like that with the markers on purpose. Lol I wanted to combine my love of pen and ink engravings with color, so I do the drawing in pen and ink and then go over it in color, I think it gives it a very nice graphic effect that is fun just to look at. I just started this style so it's still kinda new to me and i'm still working out the kinks. For example i relized that if I use a micron pen insted of a dipping pen and india ink then the micron ink kinda fades when I add the prismacolor marker.
When I want to make some think with realistic color I usually use color pencils or acrylic or oil paints.
Thanks again for the comment !

This drawing is of a character of mine, done in charcoal on 18" x 24" paper. I had to take a picture of it with a camera since it was way too big for my scanner. I hate taking pictures of my drawings cause the camera always fucks up the art... the brownish tint and the faded look of the right leg are not on the drawing, they came from the camera... so please ignore those things if you post a comment.

Your profiles need work, practice that and you will be good to go, noses are often to big or too long, and your eyes are too high, but the markers are excellent, very neat lines in your work I have to say, I have been messing with markers recently and am thinking about investing in some, any tips would be welcome, try some more interesting poses rather than people just standing
keep it up and stop by sometime

jedininja - Thank you for your advice and your complements. Yes I also noticed my profile heads are not totally correct, thank you for the critique. And I do more standing poses lately because I'm trying to focus more on the design then the action, but I know they are more boring.
Since I too was getting bored of the standing poses this new drawing is more dynamic. It's still a w.i.p. but i should have it finished in no time.

Another illustration I did last night of a character of mine called the Bone King. I used Prismacolor markers, I used a different kind of paper, I don't know what it's called but it was really absorbent. These two drawings are of the same character of mine, the first is a drawing I did of him about a year ago, i was flipping through an old sketchbook and found it. The second drawing is the same character that I just did in pen and ink. I find it very cool to see the same character of mine and how much I've improved and how much my characters have changed!

September 9th, 2008, 12:50 AM
Another example of my improvement, I have been having a lot of fun going back to some older characters I invented the end of last year and recreating them now. I've been meaning to do this for a while now but i've finally gotten around to it! I think this one turned out awesome, I'm try to explore the line quality and creating sort of comic book style inks.
First one is the new drawing I just did, and the second is the same character from about a year ago (end of 2007) I kept sorta the same design because I liked it still.

I've noticed that you tend to try and give your characters depth by making lines thicker on the side of the body that isn't hit by light. this makes them appear sort of 2-dimensional.
instead, vary your line thickness so that body parts that are closer to the viewer are thicker and lines farther away are thinner.
you've got a really nice, clean line, so I'm sure you'll do well :D
Eric Young
September 11th, 2008, 10:54 PM

These are 8 quick figure drawings I did, I did them straight with ink, no under drawing so the anatomy is not totally perfect but they are just quick drawings for practice. I think they came out pretty well.

I colored this drawing with markers, unfortunatly.. the colors didn't scan too well, i tryed adjusting it in photoshop but it only helped a little...

another character in ink. I did not use any refrences so I know it's not right, the arm on his sword looks off. Oh well, win some lose some.

Colored it with markers. Tell me what you think!

September 20th, 2008, 12:24 PM
hey man
i think you should maybe change your tools- for example- thin, synthetic brush for ink and watercolors or guache for coloring your stuff... i.m.o. you're making the colors to "clean" and ruff .. keep on working!
cheers
Eric Young
September 21st, 2008, 07:44 PM
Thanks for the comment Selfu. Actually I'm starting to use watercolors in school, so maybe I'll adapt them to my personal work. I've always been kinda scared to use brushs for fear of messing up and ruining something completely.

First is another ink character design.
Second, a sketch, I was able to borrow a Wacom for a few days so i colored this sketch in PS!

I just painted this character design in PS, I think its pretty decent for never using a Wacom before and this being my first attempt.

For some reason the picture wont show... I dunno if this is just my screen or for everyone, I dunno if I did something wrong....
EDIT____ I forgot to change the format back to RGB. Dumb me anyways, I fixed it

For an attempt at a trace-over, it's not bad. However, you might want to up the contrast up a smidge.

September 24th, 2008, 12:22 AM
hey nice sb you got here, you have some really sweet characters, and i'm really diggin' how you color with markers. (i need to try it out sometime) i think your works would benefit from a bit more anatomy studies. and maybe if you pushed your values just a bit more you could help bring out more depth and contrast to the image. anyways keep up the good work.
Eric Young
September 24th, 2008, 08:49 PM
FightingSeraph thesadpencil Thank you for the comments! FightingSeraph, I took your advice and increased the contrast just a bit.
The other two images are for a school project for my Illustration class.

This is still a WIP, I haven't finished inking yet. After that I plan on coloring it with markers as usual.
Eric Young
September 28th, 2008, 05:15 PM
So i finished inking this piece. The first one is with a white wall behind the falling character. The second is with the wall shaded. It's going to be a night scene when it's finished so I think the one with the inked wall will fit better. Anyway... tell me what ya think!

very dramatic clean lines you are soo consistent with these colors which is good but you might want to try branching out a bit, or loosening up your style and playing some
but ya keep it up and stop by sometime, Ill be back lol

Nice movement, good work done, but loads more to do. Your stuff still tends to look and feel very flat even though you're obviously working on it. You need to go to the sources that inspire you - the contemporaries that you enjoy and see how they handle depth, shadow and lighting. You're starting to get a little depth into your stuff and your perspective is technically good, but your rendering of your pieces just doesn't emphasise the feeling of depth like it should. It's all related to the need for contrast that FightingSeraph pushed for.
Good ideas though, good work coming through in your pieces. Your anatomy is getting better too, looking more confident. ;)
Hope that's a help...

wow! I like your water color way more than your previous colored works. After viewing your SB, I noticed a big difference in your animal drawings. It has improved significantly. Keep up the good work man. Also, try some more life drawings. Draw your family and friends. Draw them in stick figures even.

first is an illustration I did for my illustration class. Its 11X14 so its too big to scan... so I had to take a crappy cell phone pic. Hopefully sometime soon I can get a better one.
Second is a character design I did in watercolor. My teacher is really big on watercolors and wanted me to try one of my character designs in watercolor. So I did and I think it came out pretty decently, I need some more prectice with watercolors but I think im on the right track.

I really liked the watercolor parrot you did
I would try some more watercolors and let the medium talk to you rather than trying to make the water color look like one of the marker drawings
The 11x14 one and the scratch board are sweet too
keep it up man

Good body of work here, I'd recommend trying to make your figures look more fluid. Right now they're a bit stiff/static, more expressive line could make them more relaxed and probably help with the way the weight of the bodies sits.
Eric Young
November 28th, 2008, 05:43 PM
mollymillions - thanks for the comment, i've actually been shying away from line recently. I've been working on painting, traditionally with oils and acrylics and digitally with my new wacom. Both my traditional are still wet so this is a quick painting of an arm I did in Photoshop

i haven't posted in a while... but it wasn't from a lack of not having anything to post. I have a ton of new stuff, only all of it is too big for my scanner so i've been lazy and avoiding taking photos and scanning what i could. So i finally got around to it, here is some stuff. I've been teaching myself oils and the 2 color pictures below are both done in oils.
I really wanna know what you all think, please leave a comment!

There is some really nice progress in here, keep up the good work :D I think you are onto something with those anatomystudies. More refferenced sketching is the way to go, after years of practice with live models, I still make anatomical errors from time to time, but it gets easier everytime I practice.

OK, I've looked thru your sketchbook, you have improved, one thing I think your missing is life in your characters, and a line of action. Otherwise known as gesture, it is a over looked fundamental by allot of artists. One a human body stands still it is never straight up and down. The body shifts and balances it's weight according to the forces acting upon, for example gravity. Here this might explain gesture better, http://www.ndoylefineart.com/gesture3.html. Plz tell me if the link breaks, I have a curse with links not working. Anyways I hope that helps.

Nice stuff. I particularly like this last vehicle, tentacles for the win.
You suffer a bit from the hairy line though. Try working on extending and smoothing that out, it could help you keep the life in your drawings.
Good work!

hey,
nice scetchbook, and, together with anatomy, you should also practice values, because your pics often are too light, with not enough contrast!

hey saw your thread in art discusion and decided to drop by, now ive got a present :P
a harsh critique dont read this if your not ready for it!
why are you putting a bold outline around everything?
VARY YOUR LINE QUALITY!!
and more studies are needed, more faces from life more still lifes
push your darks and your lights experiment with mood and character
master copys too, find artists you like and copy there work line for line
i promise you if you do these things your skill level will explode

Nrx- thanks for the critique, yeah I agree with you. Although I wouldn't say this sketchbook is a very up to date representation of my work anymore I need to upload a ton of new things and I haven't really had the time to do it. But your comments are still valid, thanks for taking the time to take a look at my sketchbook.
This is a quick speed painting I did in photoshop. I'm really just experimenting with different ways of digital painting. This one I did in grayscale then used color layers over top and added some textures.
