Just got painter x need to learn all over again. 1. I want to erase some areas in a document and have the background transparent, so that I can copy and paste it into a new document. 2. The magic wand is usualy how I acheive this except it is acting weird, erasing some areas, not true to my selection. 3. Also I want to use the eraser tool the same way. 4. I start with a new document and create a new layer and then open a document and copy and pasete it into the layer thinking it will allow me to erase the background so that I can continue with my building but no luck. Im used to corel photopaint.5. Also can you copy and paste from photopaint. thanks ted

If by "background" you mean the Canvas, it can't be made transparent.

If by "background" you mean part of a Layer's imagery, there are a few ways you can do that, the one I'd recommend is to create a Layer Mask. With the Layer highlighted in the Layers palette, click the Create Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette (6th icon from the left). Click the Layer Mask thumbnail to the right of the Layer thumbnail to see a black highlight around it. Then paint with black to make the parts you want transparent. It's easy to correct mistakes by painting with white to restore those areas to visibility, then paint again with black to continue creating transparency (by hiding pixels).

When you're finished, you can copy that Layer to any open image, by either of the following methods:

With the appropriate Layer highlighted in the Layers palette, use Edit > Copy then, on the receiving image, Edit > Paste in Place.
Activate the Layer Adjuster tool (F key). Then, with the appropriate Layer highlighted in the Layers palette, click and drag in the image to move a copy of the Layer to the receiving image.

2. The magic wand is usualy how I acheive this except it is acting weird, erasing some areas, not true to my selection.

See above.

See above. Unless I'm not understanding your items 3 and 4, what I suggested above should do the trick.
