I've heard lots of people say that they listen to music for inspiration when making a drawing or painting. But do musicians look at paintings for inspiration when making music?

George Gershwin, the greatest American composer of all-time, was known to be quite an active painter. A good one, in fact. Someone close to him once said that he was much more excited if someone complimented him for his paintings instead of his music.

Morton Feldman was often inspired by guys like Rothko or Guston and he certainly wasn't the only one.

Don't forget Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. There's an interesting piece about the specific works that inspired it here (http://www.stmoroky.com/reviews/gallery/pictures/hartmann.htm) .
