Amazing daarken. I'd forgotten how hard painting is until i started up again this semester. You made this one look easy, the red nose and all, awesome.

Very nice..
I can even imagine painting something that large and that good from life in that period.
Then again, the only painting experience I have is "Experiencing Art" class last year in HS =P

2-3 month no painting ? Master Wu should kick yer ass for this man !

And what's the deal with red noses ?

Look at the guy... scarf, cowboy hat... spends his time out in the sun, probably has a permanent sunburn. And if that's a beer bottle and he's had enough of them over the years, he probably has some burst/broken capillaries in his nose to turn it red, too, like most heavy drinkers. ;)

Orrr it could just be a style thing. :)

Now you've got your skills back. Very nice and confident. I see what you're doing with his left arm, a little bit more sharpness wouldn't hurt, though.

The second cowboy rocks, bro.. It didn't take you long to get back in the swing of things.

daarken Im really diggin' your style. You did a sweet job of getting those jeans to look worn and dingy. His hat looks a little strange. Like its riding too far forward, and not really on his head. Of course it might have really been like that but it looks a bit odd. Anyway great job as usual, especially on your color choices.

i would be too! not bad daarken this is better than what i could do. i like the loseness of this but in some areas it is to lose "imo". good work, your colours are great. what kind of colour palette do you use? if you don't mind sharing.

jmac: well, i just switched to a more muted and limited palette. now i am using titanium white, burnt umber, raw umber, burnt sienne, indian red, yellow ochre, and ultramarine blue...i think that is it.

main loop: haha, yup! have u done your take home midterm? i cant find one of the stupid answers.

lukias: wow thanks!! your sketchbook is totally awesome. yeah they are all in inches...most are 11x14. i like working small..my sketchbook is even small! haha. i have a little process with the fish painting you can check out.

newage: this one is for you!

oh yeah, i reshot the pic of the second cowboy.

nice work, mister daarken. you definitely have a firm grasp on oil painting at this point. the one thing i'd like to see you concentrate on a bit more is perscision. some of your strokes seem without purpose. in oil painting, every stroke should serve a purpose and work with the rest of the strokes. i can see particularly in the painting of terry (i think thats his name) that the proportions suffer as a result of too much technique and not enough looking. look more at the model and never sacrifice the drawing for the painting. that framework must be there in order to truly "sell" the pic. i know its hard painting from life. there are that many more variables to deal with. and lose that "academy of art" red nose.is that cad red? c'mon man, only master wu can pull that one off convincingly ;P its actually getting to the point where i can tell if a person went to academy by looking at the bright ass red liberaly appiled on the noses on all his/her portraits. great work, overall, mike. i just gotta be hard on you cuz i know academy overall has a habit of massaging the good guys and not being critical. also, as i've said before, you have a lot of the tendencies i had when i dropped outta there, and if i can help bring these things to your attention now, it'll save you a lot of pain and suffering down the road.-c36
ps: the second cowboy is by far the best one on this thread, in my humble opinion...

to the new one posted: I think the way the hair melts away is just gorgeous, but i all the choppy brushstrokes at the bottom are too distracting.. I think thats the problem with a lot of Academy students.. Richard Schmid "corrupting their minds"... dont get me wrong, Schmid is one of my favorites, but kids seem to think that all you need is some flashy strokes to make a painting good.. Nevertheless, this kicks the ass of a lot of paintings i see at AAC... BTW did you see Warren Chang is gonna teach Illustrative Figure Painting? if its still around next fall, i think i will take that instead of Clothed Figure Painting...

mainloop: you are totally right. i didnt notice how busy and distracting it was when i was painting it, but now that i shot it under natural light it just jumps out at you.

dragon: thanks! yeah, i will try to get some wips..but i always forget. plus these are done in class..and i never think to bring my camera to school.

endregan: thanks. yeah you need to break the oils out.

ink: thank you!

yesterdays workshop....i did crappy all day long :P oh ya, this pose was about an hour and a half i think... i skipped out early.

mind: thanks! cant wait to see where u are in a few months.

blah, i didnt finish this painting. it was giving me a lot of problems...like the foreshortening in both his legs...they look totally whacky. nice ugly glare too. i dunno whats up with all the cowboy get ups in my clothed figure painting class either...

*edit*

thought i would go ahead and post a wip shot of the new painting im working on. this is cropped...i havent done anything to the top yet, but its about twice as tall as it is shown here. 22x28

i really like these last two.. you apply paint pretty thickly it seems.. i can never work up the confidence to do that.. the one of terry is good but im not sure if the cast shadow should be that hard... the wip is too early to point out any faults.. keep going with it.. i should try a large painting one of these days...

Seeing these leads me to believe that I'm getting no where in my quest to learn oils on my own (with the exception of books and possibly in the future, videos)... :(

oh man, that last wip was a total disaster. i finished it and brought it to class...but i ended up not even showing my teacher because i was too embarrassed. so i started a whole new painting tonight to turn in instead. i gotta put more pinks in her arm so that it relates more to her face...right now its too yellow and her face is more pink. but ya, this is uh...31 x 48 i believe. ill post more later
