Your figure drawings are great. You use a lot of interesting shapes for the heads, which adds appeal to all of them. I also like the short, painterly quality of your lines; it's well suited to speed painting, if that's what you're trying to get into. I'd like to see more of your stuff!

wow great start dude, wish I could paint like that...really good figures and colors.

It's so hard to finish anything after full-day work... I miss those times when I could paint all day.
I want to post only new stuff. but so far it's only blocked compositions and light setups. Here are 2 lightning practice for today- spotlight practice and a small piece of huge myth scene I setup for painting

I like the second to last (lighting practice).. it looks like some kind of alien abduction ... or a man dying in some battlefield.. mm in the last one i don't see so much light work...
and the frists ones are cool nothing to crit!

keep posting

Love the spontaneous brushwork and layered strokes.
Would love to understand your approach with process shots. :yum: .

josic
December 16th, 2007, 09:36 PM
huh is kind of hard to explain. I just use zilions of brushes and textures and try to keep light, contrast and composition in balance...
More precisely- 1. I start from 2-colored background, and black speed-shapes. 2.than I add a mass- textures and brush strokes. 3. than I mix colors 4.than I add light - dodge,burn, levels.
thats it

josic
December 16th, 2007, 09:44 PM
I'm just thinking about that this is actually a sketchbook section...Maybe I should post this paintings in another section...Help, anybody?

josic

josic
May 26th, 2008, 09:20 AM
hello, sketchbook
long time no posting.
And all those fine sketches, painting exercises and works in progress kept accumulating...So I'm gonna throw some of them in here.
I'm planning to start putting things in finally finished section, as professional commissions are getting more frequent, which means less time to play and experiment. And more finished art.Which is good.

here we go

jigokuen
May 26th, 2008, 09:22 AM
Man, everythign has such a "cool" feeling. The textures, the studies, they all have a flare to it that I love. I especially love the pencil drawings with the simple coloring, such style!

Great stuff.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 09:24 AM

going back to roots with simple default tools

Some WAR-chicks,
first one F.A.K.K. inspired, last one inspired by my friend Gerogi's crazy designs...

josic
May 26th, 2008, 10:21 AM
Stoat: aaahhh, the joy of custom brushes! A time devouring, self-searching process.It.s a trap.

Chris: well I use Painter and Photoshop equally, switching constantly.Wish those 2 programs could be merged into 1.

Jigokuen: you are doing some good stuff,it'll be a great artist out of you,no doubt

josic
May 26th, 2008, 10:50 AM
Next, some paint slaps for relaxation.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 11:14 AM
some of quick paint-sketches while I was working on illustrations for D&D 4th edition Players handbook.
I did this dark silhouette paint approach completely without drawing for the first time, and it was fun.Colors and ambiance were easy to set up.But later I had many problems with characters and perspective.
Gotta stick on this for a while

josic
May 26th, 2008, 11:24 AM
P.S. these are WIP and have nothing to do with actual illos that will be published. for finished stuff you'll have to wait for 'finished' section

Idea here was to go all "windy". Art director requested some sort of bad fog, so I went all toward whirlwinds, powers.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 11:36 AM
A head.Royal head + transformer's head.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 11:49 AM
these are just some tonal practices, experimentation on guash techniques.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 12:03 PM
This is my try to implement painter-kind of tools in photoshop;it didn't turn out so bad.I had these brushes long ago and completely forgot about them until a friend on the work made something similar and demonstrated the row painting power.
BTW second one is composition inspired by Kobayashi's paintings.More like study.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 12:13 PM

josic
May 26th, 2008, 12:16 PM
a quick 10-minutes Frazzeta study.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 12:35 PM
And, for the end - back to the roots.
These are actually my first fully greyscale paintings. The important tonal practice I actually skiped at the beginning and now I have to go back to it.
oh btw,talking about greyscale-
it's really hard to get away from those wonderful Warhammer paintings, so here again second picture is a reproduction of Warhammer illo. But it's a great place to start from. This is just a technique practice.

SEVANS
May 26th, 2008, 04:36 PM
The grayscale Hellboy is brilliant. Clear and easy to 'read' with alot of texture and energy.
The colours in your frazetta study have a ton of energy.
And alot of other nice work. Your quick sketches and textures pics have tons of energy.

I would however love to see a couple of really polished/finished tighter pieces, just to see that you can do it.

josic
May 26th, 2008, 04:45 PM
A hand????
ok, I have to admit I've posted this just to get my sketchbook on top of other threads, again.Heh

josic
May 26th, 2008, 04:53 PM
sevans: Hey,thanks man.we share the same taste, hellboy is also my favorite. And energy is always first thing to throw out on paper...You sound like my recent art director...
For polished stuff ,I can show only few.Reasons-I work fulltime for company that doesn't allow anything from concept to be showed ever.
There are few illustrations I've done for Wizards O.T.C. recently, but I'm not sure if I can post them yet, gotta ask them...
thanks .

Huh.Another D&D work is finished, it's time to dump sketches.
These are developments for 2 illustrations, Wraith and some sort of Pharaoh. The second one gave me a headache, because there was lots of details in descriptions and little space to place them.
It took me some time and development in different directions.

Thanks,Giorge, you are absolutely right there. In fact, those colorful paintings are older,. Now, I'm over the phase of fascination with freedom of colour expression in digital medium, and I'm trying to hold on more to modeling and values, dark and light tonal control.

Thanks, guys :)
as for inspiration, I mostly get fueled by magasines such as Natioanl G. and TCG games...I love to look at cards, because there is the whole world left un-described, they only give you a hint of much bigger scale,,,
and, of course, traditional portraits, 17th - 19th century....love them!

actuallly, guys, I'm just realising how completelly usefull is having sketchbooks like this...I can follow the (positive) changes in my own style...I can see much improvement done by switching from hard brushes to soft ones, also simplifying the whole painting process.
Right now, I've completely droped Painter and all weird Photoshop brushes, in fact I'm only using Photoshop airbrush, and the same one with less spacing and more hardness.Sometimes squiezed....Actually, that's all I need.Absolutely.Symplifying.

Hey there, some very interesting work!

I think you would benefit from some practice with drawing faces, and some exercises to show the affect of gravity and weight on your characters. Sometimes when they are holding an item, it seems rather arbitrary, that they are not exerting any effort to hold it.

Just something to think about!

I enjoy your stuff, keep on goin! :)

wow dude you sure are productive!! so much work and variety, though the craig mullins work really popped out from everything you did try going in different directions and trying different approaches its really healthy.
About the soft brushes I used to first love only to work with soft but then I noticed it makes my paintings too soft everywhere and then I worked only with hard brushes but I needed that softness so now I am down to using both where needed, the soft ones are great but the hard brushes are the ones that give you that extra crispiness that is needed many times especially when working with edges it is important to sharpen and soften where needed.
Don't limit yourself explore and update more often!

hah, today I've accidentally dug out some charcoal sketches and pencils dated from 2002-2006!!!
I've gonna post it here, with a hope that I'll have enough time to continue with chalks, where I stopped almost 10 years ago! Haven't done a single charcoal in a decade!!!!
Is really fun messing with chalks, but than again, I need to keep them clean and tidy (the part I hate) if i want to post it...
And thre's one digital at the end, just to make a nice mix
