Iliada

So I though I'd start a SB.

My name is Lise, my internet nickname is Iliada, I'm Danish, and turned 15 a week ago.

I'll start with a Arabic man I did - for the turban. No, it's not Mohammed (though I am Danish) ;)
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6765/7turbanpl8.jpg

The rest; attached:
1: First thing I did in Painter; having fun using ALL the different brushes :)
2: A duck
3 & 4: Teen challenge entries, first two thing I did in Photoshop - I live to improve
5: A skull, pencils
6: An oil pastel drawing
7: Random school hours well spent
8: Another oil pastel

Of them all, the duck is my favourite. It's lively and well-drawn. Could be a children's illustration.....

who's your favorit artist?
you rly don't have to answer any of those questions but if you are willing to let me help you, you could could learn a lot of stuff in a a short amount of time (I guess I see potential ^^)
my fav pic is the duck, it looks just like you decided to stop at that stage of details

Alesoun: Thanks, I like it too. I stylized it a bit:

Infinit: Thank you a lot. I'll try to answer your questions.
What direction do you want to take your art to? This is so difficult. I really don't know. Untill now I've just made 'art' for fun, and I would like to to stay with this. On the other hand, I would like to improve too, of course, and this will take take some hard work. You say you want to help me, I would appreciate this a lot!
What are your favorit medias?I don't know. Currently I'm drawing irl, digitally, painting with acrylics, watercolor, oil pastels etc. I like photography, and I've also designed , crafted and sold jewellery, using real gold, silver, gems and pearls. I don't know what media I prefer, and what style I like the best. But I think my main focus is the digital media.
Who's your favorit artist? Again, I have no good answer. I've drawn all my life, but it's only since I joined CA in October I've seen other people's art (besides the masters, at museums and such). From this site, the first names which springs to mind is the style of Jason Chan, Bluefooted, Felicia, cypherx, Nonie (I don't know most of their real names). This is just a few among many.

Sorry, but I can't give you better answers :) I hope you can help me, and thanks for the tip, I'll remember that =)

What I draw Friday in school (The fun thing is, I drew this completely from my mind, yet I could recognize a good friend, my brother and people I know's noses different places in that drawing):

hey!!! great start!

I know that you know that you have to work a lot on anatomy, we all have to....

Your faces are pretty good for someone your age, more than so actually!!!!

The thing you have to try now I guess is begin to draw things you see more systematically. Draw faces from photos, your friends, anyone. You 'll be frustrated at the beginning, until you can draw something that looks like them,(I am still working on that :) ) but it's the only way, to get enough information on how a face works... That, and anatomy studying, will help you reach a point where you can think "chubby, dark haired, sleepy eyed dude with big ears and a goatee" and draw a head that looks like mine, with no refference :D .

absolutely loved the goose!!!!

keep up!!!

OK you are willing to work and would like to learn digital media.
let's get this started

first of: I like that you do a lot in traditional mdias too,
imo 95% of the things you learn in traditional medias can be used in digi too!
Useing a scanned picture (mostly drawings) as a base for a digital pic is a good way to start. (I'll soon give you an example for this from a WIP of mine)

crits:
the faces and noses from school:
seeing that most of those faces/noses are eighter frontal or profile view makes me think that you try to understand the face as a 2D element with propotional features scatered on it.
like most things you might want to draw faces have volume and depth
AND are only in view situations seen frontal (mostly in advertisments) or from a 90% angle
besides: 45% angle rly looks good :D and shows more facial features

you already gathered the cummon stance on manga around here I see ^^
mangas are cool and all
one should just stay away from them till one can actually draw "normal" humans
manga is an abstraction and when you alter something you don't understand the outcome will be ... not good

the anatomy studies look good
try to use lineweight and shadeing to indicate volume

Some nice stuff here, like the others I'm quite fond of the duck! It's great to see you're putting some serious study time in there too, keep it up!

here comes a small tutorial on possible basic steps when working from a scanned drawing in digital media:
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=251970&stc=1&d=1196641727
this just represents how I do it
there are a lot of other ways too
for detailed info just ask, because atm I'm too sleepy to type more words

TheJester: Thanks :) I know I have to draw more, study more... Working on it =) I'll try drawing some portraits!
Thek: Thanks
Infinit: Thanks :) I'll try drawing more faces 45%, 2/3 perspective and I'll try colouring a pencil sketch digitally, as soon as I draw a sketch I'm just a bit happy with... Thanks a lot of critting, and and advice, I really appreciate it!

Damn, your talentet, Girl!
Please dont do to much of this Manga-thing, its just a easy Way to Draw whitout learning.
Try to Draw from life, learn the dynamic and Motions of People.
just look, learn and Draw the whole Human, not just a Nose

I see you like water fowl :P

The noses look like plain ol' transcriptions to me. I would suggest further analyzing the form. I mean using just planes and basic shapes--specifically for the nose, a wedge for the bridge, a sphere at the bottom, and 2 round thingamajigs for the wings.

Hiho,
sry for replying so late
I had a couple of things on my mind …

If I'm flooding you with advices just tell me.
I'm sure I'll be able to adept to your workspeed.

for your updates:
-Photoshop: stay away from filters and textures for now, they don't rly add depth or anything to a picture and everyone can tell what you did till you learned a couple of other things .
I'd suggest you read http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
esp the part about "Flatten and simplify"
-magazine noses: if you draw things from reference spend time on observeing details!
never underestimate the importance of observation to the drawing process!
you should at least look at what you draw twice as long as you actually draw it! (no joke, look closely)
doing so you will not only seeing how it looks but why it looks like that too.
<general tip>
drawing older/old people and faces is not only more interesting but better for learning than drawing slick, young, plain, already Photoshoped model faces!
</general tip>

TheBeast: Thanks =) I'm practising atm, and no, I don't do manga anymore, a year since I drew manga last. The backstory of the noses is actually that I hated drawing noses. I drew a face, but when I had to do the nose, I just made a line because I had no idea how to draw a nose. I even got so far that once, I drew a character, and got to the nose, panicked and made a scar across the face, and the nose missing :P So I though, why don't I draw a hundred noses from life/reference? I did, and now I actually like the nose part of a face, and can draw a okay-looking nose by heart. Hallelujah for practising!

Chobomaster: Thanks, I'll try that

Infinit: Thank you so much! I will take all of those advices =) I actually have read that tutorial, it's great!

Oh, and I'll try drawing more older people...

I bought a Sketchbook a couple of days ago, and I plan to use it a lot, just drawing things on top of my mind. No masterpieces, probably no finished things, just doodles I feel like drawing.

Different types of doodles it consists of atm:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB130.jpg
1. Pictures made of actual doodles.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB132.jpg
2. Really random doodles I made why watching a Tv-Show or a movie (here Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the ring), barely looking at the paper.
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB134.jpg
One more of no. 2

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB133.jpg
3. Random patterns

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB138copy.jpg
4. One minute doodles, drawn from my received files folder.

Nice.

lol @ the ducks

Runes! Yes!

And check out The Book of Mirrors (http://www.abrahadabra.com/tableofcontents.htm)

Gorgeous geometry and some pretty heavy duty mutational alchemy there...such images are very meditative, I don't actually have the capacity to create such things (as of yet)

Good work, I will see you around, i joined the SSG! :D

I dig the doodle-face a lot.. the other pieces not so much simply because your pen strokes are very scattery and the style you are going for NEEDs a smooth very refined line. keep it up, i'd love to see more stuff of yours from life. still-lifes, figure drawing, all of that, would be sex.

Been sick the last days, all I've done has been laying in my bed, not been able to sketch. I'll update this page tomorrow =)

TheBeast: Actually, I think it's as much my blurry bad camera ; ) But yeah, you're right. I'll try look up ansuz, looks interesting.

LadyHysdralisk: Welcome to the group! Lovely to have you here. Thank you =)

I bookmarked the link, will look at it tommorow, it's late here, and I have to get up early tomorrow...
Actually, at some point, when I was 9/10/11 years old I was able to read and write futhark runes. I was involved in some theater/role playing thing, where I was a magician, and the magicians wrote secret letters to each other in runes =D
Too bad I haven't used it in over 4 years, I've forgotten it, but it's probably not that hard to learn again =)

SiNEjde: Thanks, actually I've amde a half dozen sketches since that first one, using the doodle-method. Will try to post a couple, if they aren't in the trash can =)
Thanks for the critics, I'll try to improve, and I'll try to draw more from life. (I just find drawing from imagination more fun =) )

Thank you so much everybody!

A small update, with a couple of bad things, just to post something. I've been very busy with everything bar sketching. Anyway, a random 'portrait' based on some pictures on me when I was little. It was done, I just had to fix a little thing in the eye, then ofc, I erase too much and end up erasing all of it, sigh, I'll complete it another day. Looks pretty good in person, but my really sucky camera makes it almost unidentifiable.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB317.jpg

Just to have fun with some watercolours I found in my closet (one of those you can get in any toy store; a whole palette for a dollar or two). I know it sucks, the actual face and that, but it was just to use a bit of the colour before I threw it out. And the paper itself looks like a sea with big waves; distorts the whole thing, so don't comment on this ;)) :

Made on the back of a biology book:
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q75/LiseIsMe/SB308.jpg

And to show you a bit of my jewellery (designed and crafted by me) here's a couple of pictures(I know it's not sketches, but anyway, it's art somehow, isn't it?):

Wow! Yes, very cool, I was just talking today about jewelry to some friends, we were going to get into gem cutting etc...

Tell me, did you cast and design the metal yourself? I used to do beadwork type stuff in highschool but never got into hands on metal work (though I used to watch my great grandfather smelt gold and cut stones all the time....

I like you siv pace para bellum piece, by the way, that's one of my favorite sayings!

Iliada
January 12th, 2008, 10:07 AM
LadyH: Yes, jewellery is amazing! I love it.

All the metal in there is silver; if I need gold I gild the silver with 24 carat gold, and I use real pearls and gems.

The 'hanger-thing' (the thing with goes through the ear in the ear rings) is my own design, I've 'pulled' ( I don't know the technical words in English) the silverthread from 2mm to 0.75 mm, then shaped the thing. I've crafted rings too, like any jewellerycrafter would do (you probably know how, complicated process) and the last one is a thin silver plate I've sawn after a pattern I drew (got plenty of those) . It's about 5cms wide=)

Naomi Ningishzidda
January 12th, 2008, 12:46 PM
Where did you learn how to do all of this? Did you take classes or teach yourself? I live 15 minutes away from the National Ornamental Metal Museum here in the United States, so I was thinking of taking classes, but I don't know if I need to.

A few friends of mine wanted to experiment with some jewelry projects involving occult geometry symbolism so I was getting a little serious about it.

Nice work...

I would say when your making more cartoonier pieces, still take not on the anatomy. Just because it may be looser, the people still need to be anatomically correct.

Aww, thats too bad iliada. Well if you ever have enough time, public libraries usually have scanners. You can tear into a sketchbook then go to a library and upload 20 pages or so to hold us over till you get a new camera ;P

Well, I hope you are doing well and had a good holiday. Amazing jewelry by the way.
