Why did Vermeer do an underpainting in green? What function did it serve?

He didn't always use verdaccio. Often it was a red ochre. There's a book by Arthur Wheelock "Vermeer & the Art of Painting" that's an interesting read.

To warm up the flesh strokes he would put down during the form painting.
