View Full Version : Roger's daily sketchbook: 5-Sept-2003 to 6-Jan-2004

Hi there!

I'm starting this daily sketchbook to force myself to draw every day for an extended period of time. So far I've never been able to do so, a week at most, I hope that making it public will help me to be more constant. Even if I'm only able to do a 10 minute doodle, that will be more than nothing.

http://galeon.com/rogerdsg/daily/20030905start.jpg

Let's see how far I can get!

Btw, if I miss a day without previous warning you're free to insult me, hit me in the head or to proceed to any other punishment you see fit.

The work looks really good...but shouldn't the date in that first sketch be 9-5-2003, instead of 5-9-2003?

Sorry if that's being picky...but I thought you might appreciate it being pointed out.

roger
September 7th, 2003, 01:09 PM
Hey, I forgot you guys put the month before the day! That date is suposed to be 5-sept-2003. :D

Some back studies.
http://galeon.com/rogerdsg/daily/20030907_01.jpg

I went to a heavy metal bar yesterday night, I've tried to draw some of the people that were there.

americans have a stupid way of writing dates!

5/9/03 is the 5th of September 2003

good stuff, but I warn you... I will poke if you miss a date :nopity:

;)

roger

That's the point, to not miss any date! :)

I tried drawing on the subway as scumble fish (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11105) does:

http://www.iespana.es/rogershared/daily/20030909_01metro.jpg
very dissapointed with it.

This afternoon I went to see Barton Fink at the theater, back at home I tried drawing John Turturro from memory with terrible results. I then looked for reference, but I'm not happy with it either.

Hey Roger.....I'm glad to see your work up here. The drawings from the bar are reminiscent of Los Bros. Hernandez.....Love and Rockets. http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/9923/luvrock.html Your getting some good ch studies out of real people, which at times can be a pain to attempt. I'm sorry to hear about your recent subway effort. You kinda have to get into the habit of having your pad out at all times and just be ready for whoever sits across from you that looks interesting. I never could just read on the train, what else is more enjoyable then to look at those around you.

roger
September 10th, 2003, 03:31 PM
Thanks for the comment scumble fish, I know the Hernández brothers although I haven't read anything by them yet (something I've gotta fix sometime).

The bar ones aren't actually live drawings, I did them the following day from memory. My problem with live drawing is that I get too nervous, so I should probably do more of them to get used to it.

Yet more useles sketches today:

I won't be at home untill sunday, I'll bring an sketchbook with me and post the results at the end of the week.

Goos and clean linework and a really good eye for characterization. Your drawings are fun to look at. Somehow I like the drawing in the bikers club most - maybe reminding me of some people I know ;).

I would like to see some renderings from you. Otherwise keep on drawing (and writing the date the RIGHT way :D).

October 11th, 2003, 05:13 PM
Roger...I'm glad to see your still drawing from life. Drawing fast will bring a character to your mark that will spill over into your other work. I notice that you rely on line almost exclusively to define your subjects in your on site drawing. Something you don't necessarily do when you work from ref. Sometimes it helps to use value to build the form. For a change try rendering just the light and dark values of the form and use line when needed. Your drawings of women are quite nice!

roger
October 12th, 2003, 03:19 PM
Funny you mention that, scumble fish, because I've been having similar thoughts lately about my dependency on lines (and on my unexistent background skills too). Your comment has made me think more about it, and I've decided that the next week I'm going to do a series of paintings using only value, thanks a lot! :) However, I don't dare to do value based life drawings yet.

I've finished my ArtBQ Story painting, I now remember why I stoped using photoshop:

I really like the last two portraits - very good uise of values, nothing to crit. Most crits to the acrylic picture you got in another thread - it seems for a watercoloured acrylic a bit overworked and too dirty. But i´ve got the same probs with my own acrylics when I´m working with glazing ;).

Otherwise fine work as usual - you seem to develop your own style for creating facial characteristics.

these lattest ones are looking even better. It seems like your reducing your "sketch" lines and your sketches are looking crisper. I like the girl with the glasses and the half smirk on the last page. The smirk is very subtle but apparent. I really like the girl with the dreads on the last post, she's very exotic. With the movement and the what-not. I like your pencil sketches better than the tablet, but I'm glad your using it to sketch, I myself am to chicken to do sucha thing as my results are crappy. keep edup man.

Thanks steak-tron and endregan! I fear getting trapped with just drawing heads and faces (been there already) so I try to do other stuff as well, like the crappy tablet sketch or today's crappy feet ;). I usually start drawing heads for warm-up, but most of the time I'm already tired after drawing a page of them and I stop. I really should push myself beyond that.

you're obviously a talented man, Roger!

I like certain sketchpages more than others, but all of them are of pretty high quality.

The last sketches you're posting seem to be looser than the first ones in this thread.

Wow, many replies! :)

character, thanks for taking the time to look at all of them!

chudzta, we celebrate it by eating a lot and drinking alcohol mostly ;). That drawing is actually about the new years eve (sp?) celebration. Here it's a tradition to eat a grape for every single bell at 12 o'clock at midnight, there's some people (like me) that are unable to swallow all of them in time, hence the crying and drooling of grape juice.

Majestyx, thanks!

-The Swift-, king of randomness!? That's one the coolest things I've been called, thank you!

Grácias, me alegro que te gusten!

I'm abandoning this daily thread because I think that it has accomplished the objective: I do draw everyday. Lately, updating it everyday has been an annoyance for me, so I think it's better to stop it before I get tired of drawing because of it. If I get another block I'll start another of this threads inmediately, it helped a lot.

That said, I wanted to thank you all for looking at my stuff, and a lot of thanks for everybody who commented and supported me, you're great! :)
