Minos, judge of the dead

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/9921/chow98blackrobinminosny8.jpg

cited from the wikipedia :

In Greek mythology, Minos (in Greek Μίνως, genitive Μίνω) was a mythical king of Crete, son of Zeus and Europa. After his death, Minos became a judge of the dead in Hades.

On Cretan coins, Minos is represented as bearded, wearing a diadem, curly-haired, haughty and dignified, like the traditional portraits of his reputed father, Zeus.

In Michelangelo's famous fresco, The Last Judgment (located in the Sistine Chapel), Minos appears as judge of the under-world, surrounded by a crowd of devils. With a snake coiled around him, Minos watches as the damned are brought down to hell.

HOLDING HIS LOVE [IMAGINATION]

SOURCE; WIKIPEDIA link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos)
APPEARANCE
On Cretan coins, Minos is represented as bearded, wearing a diadem, curly-haired, haughty and dignified, like the traditional portraits of his reputed father, Zeus. On painted vases and sarcophagus bas-reliefs he frequently occurs with Aeacus and Rhadamanthus as judges of the under-world and in connection with the Minotaur and Theseus.

STORY ABOUT HIS LOVE
Asterios, king of Crete, adopted the three sons of Zeus and Europa, Minos, Sarpedon and Rhadamanthus. In adulthood, the three brothers quarreled over a beautiful boy they were all in love with, by the name of Miletus, son of Apollo and Areia. The youth however preferred Sarpedon, so Minos in revenge went to war and conquered the whole island. Sarpedon and Miletus escaped to Lycia, where Miletus founded the city that bore his name. Other mythographers claimed that the beloved youth's name was Atymnios, and that he was the son of Zeus and Cassiopeia.

This second Minos - the 'bad' king Minos - is the son of this Lycastus, and was a far more colorful character than his father and grandfather. It is to this Minos ('Minos II') that we owe the myths of Theseus, Pasiphaë, the Minotaur, Daedalus, Glaucus, and Nisus. Unlike Minos I, Minos II fathered numerous children, including Androgeus, Catreus, Deucalion, Ariadne, Phaedra, and Glaucus - all born to him by his wife Pasiphaë. He was the grandfather of King Idomeneus, who led the Cretans to the Trojan War.

Wikipedia:The solar explanation of Minos as the sun-god has been thrown into the background by the recent discoveries. In any case a divine origin would naturally be claimed for him as a priest-king, and a divine atmosphere hangs about him. The name of his wife, Pasiphae ("the all-shining"), is an epithet of the moon-goddess. The name Minos seems to be philologically the equivalent of Minyas, the royal ancestor of the Minyans of Orchomenus, and his daughter Ariadne ("the exceeding holy") is a double of the native nature-goddess.

Minos, Once step-father to the mighty Minotaur. Minos, now a judge of dead, reflects on the death of his step-son, beast, and guilt.

references:
Minos (in Greek Μίνως, genitive Μίνω) was a mythical king of Crete, son of Zeus and Europa. After his death, Minos became a judge of the dead in Hades.

Minos was challenged as king and prayed to Poseidon for help. Poseidon sent a giant white bull out of the sea. Minos planned on sacrificing the bull to Poseidon, but then decided not to. He substituted a different bull. In rage, Poseidon cursed Pasiphaë, Minos' wife, with zoophilia. Daedalus built her a wooden cow, which she hid inside. The bull mated with the wooden cow and Pasiphaë was impregnated by the bull, giving birth to a horrible monster, the Minotaur(half man half bull).

Also...my mind, ive read alot on mythos and remember the story of the minotaur very well. Anything with tricking a bull rape to get raped some how stays in my head...

reference- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos
To reconcile the contradictory aspects of his character, as well as to explain how Minos governed Crete over a period spanning so many generations, two kings of the name of Minos were assumed by later poets and mythologists. According to this view, the first King Minos was the son of Zeus and Europa and brother of Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon. This was the 'good' king Minos, and he was held in such esteem by the Olympian gods that, after he died, he was made one of the three 'Judges of the Dead', alongside his brother Rhadamanthys and half-brother Aeacus. The wife of this Minos ('Minos I') was said to be Itone (daughter of Lyctius) or Crete (a nymph or daughter of his stepfather Asterion), and he had a single son named [Lycastus], his successor as King of Crete.

Here's my final. all credit go to my new muse, without her it would have sucked!

//edit: Research-wise the details came from his wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos) and what i remember about greek mythology. (more specifically the "minos in art" and "minos in poetry". This line is what i based his design off of:

On Cretan coins, Minos is represented as bearded, wearing a diadem, curly-haired, haughty and dignified, like the traditional portraits of his reputed father, Zeus.

Minos, Judge of the Afterworld, sending a dutiful soldier onto Elysium, with hell behind him. After the Virgil version.

http://www.daestwen.com/gallery_pics/minosfinal.png

Internet Resources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos
The idea of Elysium/Tartarus(Hell) comes from the virgil version there (of which i did very basic symbolic representations), though I took artistic liberty with much of it (like not putting him on an urn and the silent jury (two figures in one image was enough for me), which leads me to my next resources:

Book Resources:
Unfortunately I'm at school right now, and don't have access to my books, so I can't give the exact titles. :/ But:
1) I think it's called "Mythology" and it's a huge hard cover with a gold spine and a big picture of Medusa's head on the cover. It had a brief entry on Minos, but I mostly used it as reference for style purposes of greek/roman gods (for even though he was minoan, it was in their cultures which he was brought down through the mythology).
2.) It's green, and totally full of pictures, and I believe the title is "History of Costume Through the Ages" or something similar. As my internet research for Minoan male outfits proved mostly fruitess (I found lots of girls and young men fighting bulls), the book had some Assyrian images which looked fairly similiar, and from which I took the hair and beard (though modified a little by greek and a little of the minoan girls).

I will check both book titles when I get home, though I probably won't be able to post them until late tomorrow.

First Time here. Source: Did Minos from Dante's Inferno Canto V. http://danteworlds.laits.utexas.edu/circle2.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos
There stands Minos Grotesquely, and he snarls,
Examining the guilty at the entrance;
He Judges and dispatches, tail in coils.
By this I mean that when the evil soul
appears before him, it confesses all,
and he, who is the expert judge of sins,
knows to what place in Hell the soul belongs;
the times he wraps his tail around himself
tell just how far the sinner must go down.

From the Mark Musa translation for Penguin Classics

Minos Judge of the Underworld has been hardened by unending years to his duty. A plume of fire bursts from behind him as his tail wraps around him showing which circle in the Underworld you will remain. He pauses, and raises his hand in thought. Were you not before him you would pray, but he merely considers where among the lecherous you will stay. Forever.

The Dante version :)

Resources: "In Dante's The Divine Comedy, Minos sits at the entrance to the second circle in the Inferno, which is the beginning of proper Hell. Here, he judges the sins of each soul and assigns it to its rightful punishment by indicating the circle to which it must descend. He does this by circling his tail around his body the appropriate number of times. He can also speak, to clarify the soul's location within the circle indicated by the wrapping of his tail." Other than that, mostly image searches on google: Crete, Minos, Golden bull. Also influenced by Micheangelo's last judgement, Dore bible illustrations and Alma Tadema's paintings. I'll try to keep better track of my reference next round if this is going to be a new format.

As this was a research based project this time around, you will need to cite your research sources with your final. (just edit your post and provide links or sources). We want to be able to see where you drew your information from, and how it applied to your piece.

No entries will be accepted after this post.

If you find that you are not in the Poll it is because you were either too far off topic or there were no clear indicators to signify who the character was. In doing research for a project, it is important to be able to distill that information down to visual symbols, which help tell the story of the character you are working on.

Cheers,

Grenogs, you're entry wasn't deleted - it wasn't taken to poll. While it was good illustration, there was nothing there to identify Minos as Minos. You're work is good, but it needs to be identifiable as the character in question.

Don't take it personally, please - I've had my illustrations rejected on more than one occasion from paying clients, and it's always rough. I don't reject the pieces out of hand.

Kick some ass in round 99 - which, incidently, is up: CHOW 99 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=111901).

Wow, these look so cool. Make me wish I had participated. :(

Blackrobin: Perfect face and great details. The snake stands out a lot for some reason and draws me away from the character. Maybe the saturation? Or maybe I just like snakes :P

Mayk: Oh man I love those edges and the translucent colors. The picture is sketchy, but in a good way. Great job on the gold too.

sony: Neat colors! I like the techniques you used lots. I think the hand could use more work and the pose is a little static right now. Other than that it's good!

TwoKinds: What a neat style!! I love the skeletons and the bg. This would have looked awesome with a really intense pose/angle. But it also works how it is. Nice job.

JessiBean: I am dying of envy right now. That is gorgeous (my favorite of all your works so far, including all the dA art). Digging the design and colors and pose and bg and all of it. Since we aren't supposed to ass-pat all the time, I will say his left foot (our right) looks a teensy bit less finished than the rest of the pic. That's a nit-pick though.

JL.Alfaro: Great colors and design!!

tmyohlaing: Welcome to CHOW! I like the values. I wish the edges had a little more work and the bg wasn't pure black. But I'm looking forward to seeing more from you.

solorpower: Niiiice pose/concept! Not sure if it was intentional to have such a bright blue, but I love all the other colors. Something looks "off" about the minotaurs foot. It's very stubby (on purpose I assume) but it still seems not right to me. I like the rest of the anatomy though.

rodimus25: Very interesting take on the character. I like! I love the bg and how you drew him in the "style" of many of those greek illustrations.

nram: Nice warm tones and I like how you rendered the fabric. Maybe take another look at the cheeks/ face anatomy? Nice bg too.

davi: That rendering is sooo pretty ;_; How long does something like this take you?

grenogs: Oooh glowy... Very nice mood in this. And his legs have, like, a hint of hair! Haha, very cool. I would love to see it in color (although I'm one of those people who really gets drawn in by black and whites so I can really appreciate this pic)

rodriguez: I like the design. He seems flat and the whole picture has a lot of blackish shadows. The pic seems a bit uh... dirty I guess. Muddy. That may have been on purpose, but it stands out to me *shrug*

NARobles: Great mood and design! He looks so creepy :P

Slash: Um, those are some really great snake textures. classic pose too :) He doesn't look supported enough though if that makes sense.

Daestwyn: I like the concept and the fact you drew a whole "scene"! The colors seem messy compared to the linework (but you only had a limited time to draw this so it's all good). Nice job!

Coleb: It sucks you ran out of time. I hate that! Aside from being very "soft" this is really nice. And oh gosh what a beautiful hand!!

Stormakt: I can see where you were going with this, and I like it. But it could be refined and maybe the colors could be chosen a little more carefully. Right now it doesn't have that "punch" it could have with more careful attention (mainly to saturation levels I think, but I could be wrong)

fydback: You rock. Your style is so pretty and full of subtle details. It works perfectly with the theme.

Shera 3000: I like the style but it's hard to see. Is it a photo?

Jska: I like the sketchiness and the heavy blacks. But this strikes me as particularly Native American. I still like it lots dthough (that bone tail is fancy stuff!)

dabble: Very pretty! I like the character a lot but the rest of the image is less finished and I wish it was more refined. I love the way you handled the shiny bits lots.

timothee: What a fun style! His far arm seems a little off and the colors don't seem as cohesive as they could but it's really minor. I like it!

benu: I like how you drew a whole scene! The anatomy and perspective seem a little off, but it kinda makes the picture look ancient or something. :)

edujante: Way outside of the style you have been using. It definitely works though, especially for a somewhat rushed piece.

-Food]-: I like the colors. I think the depth of the pic could be pushed more to make this really dramatic.

Great round everyone!!! :meow:

oregano, hey no probs, im not offended at all by your decision, it was a nice relaxing chow, with the b&w experiment. i even questioned it myself when i looked at it after i posted it. I went for subtlty, by only adding the snake, but i think i went a little over board, and on reflextion the snake isn't realy a good symbol, due to the fact that i dont think its even mentioned in the story, its more an artistic representaion, but i could be wrong, lol.
I think my only crit is though, and i don't want to aim this at anyone in particuler, but personaly i think theres one or two other images also bordering the non minos look, either becouse their gone overkill or again to subtle, anyway thats my say, i better stop now or im going to start to sound a little bitter here, hehehehehehehe.
Anyway, thanks for the quick responce origano, very much appretiated , good luck everyone;)

Voted for jessi, simply becouse its a good image, it has that anchient greek feel, also the bulls and clothing illustrates hes more than just another greek. Also i love the background, and the whole complimentary colour sceme going on, with the reds and the turqoises.

Oregano: i was just curious about my work that where it lacked the most from the description :geekg: so that i can improve, regards n respect

The main issue here is that it's not really based on the research - I can't tell what the heck it is that he's holding, for one. The clothing, also, doesn't look recognizably Greek or Minoan that i can tell. At least not that I've seen. If it was, as link to your reference on that should have been provided.

The next round, even though it's more of an open topic, push yourself a bit harder to hit the topic dead on. If you follow a little more closely with what's provided, you should be fine.

Cheers,
~Oreg.

It's okay, you can be bitter ::needle:

However, you're right - there are a couple of pieces there that were thisclose to not going. I won't name names, but some of them walked a little too near the line of rejection and I really had to struggle on whether or not to include them.

Cheers,
~Oreg.

Food to win for me, a very imense feel of the underworld and a strong powerful Minos.

Kudos to Jessibean, JLAlfaro, Mayk and Solarpower for really strong pieces who all could have won for me.

Nice entries everyone! I appreciate the crits. I am going to re-do this entry solely for my portfolio. I feel it can be better and a stronger piece if I re-work it, and I know which areas went wrong.

Great Chow!

Now....on to Chow 99!!!!

Howdy, everyone! Newbie alert ;)

Stepping out of the shadows here. I love the CHOW forum, it's always a thrill to browse through the WIPs and the finals products, something I've been doing for quite a while.

Speaking of, there are some excellent finals in this round so it was hard to choose! I adore mythology so the Minos topic was especially exciting for me.

My votes go to: mayk, fydbac, Slash and JessiBean.

dabble I really liked your style. I think it might have gotten more votes if it wasn't so high on the list.
I really loved the slouch posture in JessiBean's too. Sort of that bored, "why me but at-least-I'm-a-judge," look on his face.
