Anyway here my rough rough so far;), probably going to keep him historicle minos, also concidering doing it black and white, im thinking the strong lighting and deep shadows would be very suitable this kind of image.

i dont think it realy matters which one it is, their basicly the same, both were kings, both came of anchient crete, both dressed the same clothes, both were concidered blood firsty rulers, the only main difference in their appearance is if you do the god version living in hell, you add a snake. Oh and maybe a different background, but even that can be done in a way to suit both worlds. Its not the character thats important, but how you portray that character which makes it interesting.

Daestwen, welcome back! I've missed you :^^:
davidherd - muchas gracias, and an asspat right back at you. I like your beginning, I want to see more. Also, welcome to CHOW.
NARobles - I *am* excited... he has such an awesome story, as I'm sure you're aware. Good start, by the way, he looks all flowy... and kind of weighted down with a burden. I know it's a sketch, but watch how much he's leaning to the left there. If you want a dynamic post, punch it up, if not, straighten him out so he won't fall over. And paint! Now! :teeth:

First idea sketch of minos.. just to get the basic visuals down.. so not one shredd of anatomy correct on this one.. was planning to incorporate a huge vase or urn on his lefthand-side and the shapes in the background is two griffins as seen in the images from the supposed throneroom of Mycenae.. I have indication here that he will be sitting on a white bull, and with the "labyrint" of the minoan godess.. (the 2-headed axe).. will re-use some geometrical shield designs from mycenae as well.. tryig to get a hold of a modell that usually stands for me.. would love crits on this one..

not sure if it is a tail, in blakes version of minos i cant tell, but in michaelangelos version in the sistine chapel, its a snake, biting his nuts. which would make sence becouse a snake is a serpent, and often used to simbolise many things in religion or mythology.

looking good so far, but i think it would look better with much smaller horns, like a young calf would. at the moment with horns that size, the baby wouldnt even be able to hold his head up, also, dont make minos so old looking, give his hair a more black looking. at the moment he looks to old to be even able to walk, let alone father a child.

Apparently we men can father children as long as our bodies go on producing sperm which can be all of our lives! Wooppee! (I'm on number three just now, so maybe there's still time to squeeze a few more out before the end  )

Great work so far, everyone. I perversely enjoy seeing everyone's sketches more than the finished, airbrushed finals.
Afraid I've had too much going on so here's my initial sketch and close-to-final painted bit all in one post. Despite wanting to pencil sketch after ages, went the route of stains and shadows, again. Had a vision of Minos as a monster of the deeps... all those eons at the bottom of the sea, running the underworld is transforming the grizzled old Greek, but he's kept his sandals on.

Yeah, he wouldn't sacrifice a certain bull to poseidon, so poseidon cursed his wife with zoophilia, and after being impregnated by a bull his wife gave birth to the minotaur.
(I love greek mythology!) :D
Cleaned up the lines a bit. I'm gonna have to use reference for that snake head, it looks ridiculous! I'm also gonna have to fix the urn so it doesnt look skewed, and fix the arm holding it.

davidherd: Not much to see yet, but I like his nose ring.
humboldt squid: Still just a sketch, just keep an eye on his anatomy. Even if he's wearing a giant toga/skirt, he still has a body under there. :)
grenogs: I'm liking the lighting - very shakespearian. Looking forward to the next wip.
NARobles: He's bald! :O Otherwise, looking okay. The staff doesn't seem to rest on his shoulder, though, rather it looks like he is holding it a few inches above. Unless that is your intention, you might want to take away that little gap of air between his shoulder, the staff, and his hand.
cowboy surfer: Liking the pose, but his hands looks a little big? At least the one on the left.
miffo81: Still just a sketch, and therefore unclear, but keep an eye on the length of his legs, especially the left one. If you want to show foreshortening in a line drawing, make sure his calf overlaps a little on his thigh.
dabble: Nice! I'm liking the classical-ness. :) His back looks a little too thick, but that might just be the pose.
spudstudios: Such a tiny WIP! :D So far, I think you're okay without ref. Looks good so far.
JessiBean: I saw your more-completed sketches in your sketchbook. Looking awesome! Probably my favourite of your CHOW sketches so far. (Or maybe the Yin Yang one...)
sony: His clothes are so out-there! XD I think the problem is that once someone mentioned that it looked like a penor, I can't get that out of my head...
Jack Frost: Looking good, keep it up! :) It doesn't really matter if he looks roman or greek, though, as both used him in their mythology. So it depends if you want to do the real version of him, or the mythological one...
mayk: Haha, he looks so shocked. My only problem is the way his hair is doesn't look like it's falling very realistically.
WCM: Careful with your anatomy. His head (the right one) is currently smaller than his bicep...
townes: Not really sure why this is here...? :/
Daray: The minoans traded a lot with the egyptians, so maybe if you find an egyptian weapon that you like, you can trade it in there instead of Roman, which wouldn't have been around at the time. :)
darkrain: I don't really get this one... ^^;
Slash: Looking good, just don't forget to develop his right (our left) hand.
Softskin: Haha, I love his expression. Otherwise, I don't know what to say about this one yet.

Started the color. Not too happy with the colors, so they will probably change drastically. Halfway through this i remembered that he's supposed to be in hades. A bright sunny blue might not be the best scheme for that. ;)
I've also got some trouble with the rendering style, the sort of realistic approach to the rendering clashes with the more cartoony face and hair. I'll see what i can do about it tomorrow.

Slash - looking pretty snazzy so far, the face seems a little flat compared to all that detail on his torso. And you're right about the colors, hand, jar, etc. Have you considered any sort of background? Nice to see you working on a naked *man* for a change... ;)
Softskin - no drinking binges is wise (unless you can paint drunk, and then it's just plain hilarious)... good beginning, just watch those colors, they're so cartoony right now, tone them down and strive for some unity between the bg and the character.
Darkrain - good beginning, but be careful about that lighting -- it looks like it's coming form 4 or 5 different directions and it's too harsh in some places, like on the fish-helmet -- and some of the anatomy is off (feet, hand).
Daray - you cannot have my color skillz, mwahaha! I jest, but I am happy to help with pointers, etc. Let me know what kind of specific questions you have, and I'll be happy to fire back. Also, great sketch so far, he's moody already. I would watch the proportions (head seems a snick large) and watch those folds on his skirt/kilt, etc. They're sloping a bit much to the one side. Maybe drape some cloth and study it's movement to get an idea of how it works... Looking forward to the paint! :teeth:
townes - I'm going to agree with everyone else, this may be a nice painting, but you didn't follow the brief at all. A re-paint is in order. :P
WCM - I can see where you're heading, and it's good. But the anatomy in this is pretty off -- are you going for something cartoony or more realistic? The anatomy is kind of off with one leg being longer than another, etc. Maybe get some good references of musculature and such and go from there... Moodiness is a gread idea, though... run with it! :teeth:
mayk - yours just made me laugh, wonderful character in this illustration. Two things bugging me most at this point arethe funny angle of the arms on the throne (they're not on the same plane as the floor and look wonky, if you intend them to be sloped because of carving or design, it should be more evident) and the shilouetted guy in the front's hand is sort of crowding the baby monster's space and he's so even and placed so centrally in the space between the edge of the piece and the pillars, he seems to be chopping it off. Maybe push that figure off more to the left so he frames the scene rather than cuts into it. Keep going, I can't wait to see this one finished.
More soon...

Slash what is minos looking at? I don't understand the significance of the snake or the vase?
You should add some more drama.

so here is the next step in my minos.. was hopeing to be able to get a good aquarel on this tomorow.. when its not 5 in the morning.. I am planing to get him a big urn in the background, and was wondering if a background might catch too much attention, maybe just a simple colour scheme to suggest a wall or such?.. Please drop some crits..
I really like where everyones going with minos here.. amasing how everyones style comes out in there sketches and ideaframes.. this is going to be a good one!
Night to you all.. get some sleep before my croqui class at 10..;)
(can see now that that lip need some fixin´, allas tomorrow.. )

Haha Sony, gotta love phallic imagery right? ;) You could probably rework the hands to better convey that he's holding that thing, now it doesn't look too convincing.

Woohoo another bald one..or balding one!
My only critique I have is his left (our right) knee looks a little too thin.
A very dominating kingly look. =3 Or Judge..ly.:dur:

just another update, changed the positional slightly, not sure yet whether or not to keep this rough textured look or to soften it a bit, still going with the b&w though.

Pay a little more attention to the the legs, as they look very, very off at the moment. Also, you may wish to adjust your coloring some as it's starting to over saturated in places.
Oh, and just because these have *just* been added: :ilaekae:

Mayk: That is a great image! Right when I saw the first sketch you made, I had to laugh... but it's also tragic. You really took an interesting angle on it - baby minotaur being presented to the king. Quite shocking!

These are some superb pieces you guys have made. Too bad I couldn't join in - I fell in love with cakeypigdogs creature concept #84 for COW 100 and had to make it for COW 101.
I'll comment on as many as possible when everyone have posted their piece in the final burning. :)

Here's my final. Going for a classical feel for the judge of the dead. It's a totally different composition than I had earlier in the week. Was worried I wouldn't make it to the finish line. Of course there are areas that need a little more time. Some nice pieces here, good show everyone.:asspat: http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x18/dabble21/ConceptArt/CHOW/Minos_final.jpg

Just posted my Minos in the final burning thread. I hope it's not too late, I have no Internet atm so I have to use university computers to post. Seeing the pictures of the others here, I realize how much mine sucks. I like jessibean's costume design, pose and colors very much and mayk and sony's are hilarious :D

As this was a research based project this time around, you will need to cite your research sources with your final.

This was just one of those projects that don't work out.
I decided experimenting with a new brush set, which was hard enough, and then the colour ran away from me completely. That Orange was hard to work with, and I think I could have spent a lot more time on this one.
My illustration is supposed to depict the mythological Minos, just after losing his son Androgeus and conquering Athens. I imagine he is a strong, but ageing warrior king, who has endured a lot and made hard choices in his life. He is atill king, but when he closes the doors to his private chambers, the weight of his responsibilities and events of his life, weigh heavily on his shoulders.
