View Full Version : Comics Start-up!

I'm putting this here because most of the discussion has been in this section so far. If it's not appropriate here, would one of the mods be kind enough to move us where we belong?
CA has Concept-oriented community activities for creatures (COW), environments (EOW), characters (CHOW), industrial design (IDW), and random lunacy (3CH), but until now, there hasn't been a specific equivalent for Comics. That will change the first week of January when we launch ...ummm...damn... we don't have a name yet, but trust us...it'll be in all caps...and it won't smell like a damn Muppet. It's gonna be ugly, it's NOT gonna be a walk in the park, and you will probably cry a lot. Hell! What else could you want?!?
We (Ilaekae and llothcat, so far) will be establishing a weekly/bi-weekly "competition" and learning experience for those who might be interested in sequential comics, and comics in general. We'll be dealing with design issues, coloring, pencil and inking, lurid prose, layout, character development, environments and genres, and all the neato stuff that makes life worth getting up for when you can't read real words but like lookin' at the pitchurs anywayz...
This thread is the official thread for any and all discussion on this majestic foray into the unknown, and all suggestions, comments, and phone numbers of cute younger sisters (or brothers, as the case may be) will be appreciated.
First assignment: What the hell are we gonna call this thing? The discussion is now open.
We also want input on what you think we should be doing. We'd like to keep the events to WEEKLY as much as possible, with the possibility of a few extending to an additional week or two where it makes sense.

I'm voting for a 2-week deadline, no page limit but a recommended of 5 or so pages. If you submit far less, it better be damn well justified. Also, very very vague concepts, like 'Fatigue,' or '2 am.'
if we go with the bi-weekly deadline, the logical naming would be F.U.C.K.
Fortnightly Unpublished Comic Kompetition
Other idea of mine is to extend the deadline to 4 weeks, make it a bigger deal and end up publishing it in a book that would be available like the T-Shirts or Calender. Only the best, of course.
Dunno what it would be called, though.

COM-BAT (Comics Battle)
3 pages of script provided (without finished dialogue or panel breakdowns, leaving folks with the freedom to tell the story in their own way)
Grade on storytelling, stylistic consistency, drawing skills and wow factor.

I'm suggesting 3 page stories on a general or specific theme.. like uhh.. loneliness or something involving tightrope walking elephants (obviously neither of those things should ever be the actual theme). Three pages is plenty for a short story and not a heinous amount of drawing to do in one week.
I don't really mind how it all goes down though, I'll probably participate no matter what.
SAW is an appealing acronym.

November 19th, 2007, 05:23 PM
I like SAW, as an acronym.
I like the bi-weekly (or longer) approach, with more, completed work due. It's more of a challenge, and isn't that what this IS? A challenge?
GHill
November 19th, 2007, 05:38 PM
Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this! It'll be something to look forward to after I've been beaten and mangled in the LMS tournament.
How bout SOW (Sequence Of the Week)? Already have a cow, so maybe throw a pig into the mix.
I like the 3 page idea. It would be cool if the structure changed every other week. The first week would be with a somewhat structured script and the next week could be an open topic like alice_ mentioned. I think you would gain some knowledge about sequential art you may not have thought about from the structured challenge and then apply what you learned to the open challenge the following week, and so on.

I like SAW as the acronym,
bi-monthly or monthly time limits
three page minimum, no max
fairly vague stories, no scripts.
Well that is what I would like to see, but who cares what I think?

looking forward for this activity.
about the name i like more the ones with the sequential word as part of it.
pow is to much batman i think (nothing bad with that, but is too represenatational of certain types of comics)
in any case every name has potential, and the important thing is have the activity. so thanks for the effort, and time you put in this.

"POW!" sound good to me, and its definately an interesting idea.Where did all this comics discussion start anyway, cause since thats what i study its one thing i was hoping to find in CA for a long time...but wy restrict the comics thing to only a challenge? i think an additional sub-forum would be cool (instead of opening useless non-art related ones.
If this is a bad idea, can anybody link some really really good comics online communities?
ciao

This is exciting news! I would prefer the time limit to be one week vs. 2 with a minimum of three pages--I think would be a good challenge period for some solidly finished pages. Alsoooo... sub-forum would be nifty for all of those juicy tidbits (e.g. character design, coloring,penciling..etc)! ;D

About one year ago I was very enthusiastic towards creating my first comic project. I wrote short story, designed characters and so on. The problem was that I expected too much and overshot myself. It ended really quickly and I realised it would be better for beginning to just do some simple and super short stories or even parts of the stories/single situations. I think this kind of activity could be good for something like that. Two or three pages just to get ready for bigger stuff and not worry too much. Not enough for drawing an developed story but to me it could be more fun than racing against time.

I'll lurk if it's a competition type thing. Between pages I'm paid to do, and pages I do for myself, there's no room for other pages. If I can work my own pages in though, it would be cool.
Perhaps, instead of being given a scene to illustrate, we should all be starting off from step 1 of Scott McCloud's 6 step process, and coming up with our own ideas. Then show how we reasoned through each of the 6 steps to get our final result.

Nobody ever reads the intial announcement on page one, do they...
Yes, it's going to happen. Yes, it will get off the ground. BUT...it will not happen (as previously noted) until AFTER January 1, so it doesn't interfere with the holidays and the LMS3 competition...which I intend to win hands down, btw...
This is a long term project, and it requires a lot of preparatory work so it starts off running at full gallop. That is going on now...
I now return you to your normal cruising of the lounge...thank you for your attention and please note our advertisers and sponsors on the way out or they won't let us in here anymore... :P

This is a duplicate post from the Comic Name poll, so that everyone will get a chance to see it...
The pissants have spoken and the new comic competition will henceforth be referred to as P.O.W.! I will ask Davi to set up our disgusting little pen at his convenience in the appropriate place so we can begin our first activity on Wednesday, January 2, 2008.
We (llothcat and I, and a few others) will use the time between now and then to establish a set of guidelines that will be impossible to follow, a series of initial exercises in advance that no one will be able to do on time (to make sure we're covered for at least a few weeks til things get rolling), and all that other good stuff. We will also probably establish a sub-set of threads for comics discussion (technique, tools, maybe some tutorials, and skill development), useful links, and other such necessary evils.
P.O.W.! will follow the style of the other challenges, with MOST of the challenges going one week each more or less, and strict rules for finish and acceptance for voting. Voting will be done by any and all members of the forum, and we will try to make special arrangements for those here who cannot read, write, count, are in a permanent coma or may be Muppets.
This will not be a challenge for the weak of heart. We are going to push for the most professional work you can produce, on a professional schedule, using professional clocks, calendars, and linear measuring devices. The challenge will be open to ANYONE who is a member of the CA Forum, whether you have cooties from other places or not.
Take some time to practice your skills, enjoy the holiday(s) of your choice, and just plain relax, because on January 2nd, your asses belong to me...you poor poor sniveling little sods...
and Qitsune...
"You intend to win the whole competition by January 1st? Is there something we should be aware of? 3 more rounds in 24 hours weee!"
Of course! The really stressful part is trying to second guess the subjects that Cody will come up with, and between the drugs, booze, and coffee, I should be able to psychically pull that off easy... :P

i was bored and came to check out what's happening here at conceptart.org. Im glad i did. This is gonna be like super Awesome!
And the timing for this comic challenge wouldn't be better, Jan 1, that's the day I become unemployed! From then on, I'll have all the time i need :D
About the challenge: I was thinking that the challenges should mostly be a week long, but occasionally they could be longer. Like 2 or 3 weeks. But then the page/panel count would have to be higher.
Also on some week we would be required to draw like only 1 or 2 pages, but the pages would have like 15 (or more) panels each. While on another week we would draw 5-6 pages, but each page would only have like 2-3 panels. Also on some week we might have to draw a silent comic, but it would still have to convey all the emotions and stuff..
As for what i would like to draw (or try to), would be; horror, car chase, sword fight, underwater and maybe some week.. dare i say it.. something erotic :P
Also i think that it would be helpful, if on some challenges the protagonist was a child or really old or an animal. I at least, draw rarely children or old people, and i don't believe I'm the only one with this problem :S
