hey guys, I'm new...well kinda Ive been lurking around and haven't really posted anything, but anyway what brushes and setting do you guys use for dong a basic sketch in photoshop? Ive seen a lot of videos on youtube of ppl sketching in PS and there lines look much better than mine, Ive just been using the standard hard brush with some setting changed, but it looks so plastic :( any advice would be appreciated. thx

Check out these brushes made by Bumskee: http://www.minart.net/temp/basic.abr
The first one is a good sketching brush. It's small, and works almost like a pencil. If you work with a wacom tablet, then it will feel more natural. If you're working with a mouse, the effect will look plastic, and harsh. So get a Wacom now! The best way in the end is to work with a good pen tablet, and just make your photoshop brushes sensitive to Pen Pressure.

I use a standard brush and I flatten it a bit so that its not perfectly round. I then set the Size Jitter to 'pen pressure' and for that it works pretty much just like i would use a regular ball point pen.

Sketching brush really could be anything I think.. bit of grit does help but any brush at size 4~8 with pressure to size seems to work well.
