Hey everyone,

I wanted to share some of my artwork on this forum. I have some more work scattered over the Web; Coroflot, Animation Blogspot, and CGSociety. You can find my most recent work on my blog Soggy Grits (http://soggygrits.blogspot.com). I draw cartoons most of the time, but I also love the art involved with concept art. So here is my work; a mix of life drawing, illustration, and sketches. The more exposure you can get, the better. CCs are welcome and encouraged, because I want to get better as I go along. thanks for visiting! :yayca:

I like it! Do you only focus on characters or do you do environments and tech as well?

The life drawings/animal sketches are gorgeous! They have the things i've seen and admired, aspired to in sketches, but never been able to pull off. They really bring to mind the drawings in Mike Matessi's force drawing book too.

I think your cartoon stuff is excellently drawn and outlined too - but not a huge fan of your colour choices. But that's personal preference more than anything, they're great pieces still :)

Noice life drawings. Your cartoon sketches remind me of Ren&Stimpy or the Ripping Friends haha. Your vector drawings are pretty good too. With those I'd suggest you try some fading gradients. You could make them more deep that way.

Keep up the good work

Sorry for the late reply, everyone :lifedrawing:.

Chirp Chirp: Thanks for the comments, Chirp. Drawing characters are my strongest suit. I also like to develop storylines for my characters so I'll draw some environments and tech along with them. By tech, you mean gadgets and props right? :B There's a game convention in Goldsboro coming up this month. I'm hoping to meet some concept artists there, and learn something new from them.

Thek: Thanks for the comments, Thek. I have that Force drawing book for animators. I also have drawings from Glen Vilppu, which helped me out a lot. I'll be hitting the mall and bookstores here after work to do some life drawing again. I'm waiting for my misterart gear to come in *anxious*

ped454: Thanks for the comments. I'll have to try that fading gradient idea in my new artwork. I have some Alberto Ruiz tutorials from Draw! magazine on that subject to help me out.

Unusual style you have here... I like the cartoony elements of your work, and the life drawings are nice, though I get the feeling that sometimes the proportions are off a little, probably due t the nature of the way you draw with the cartoons. My faves are the animal studies at the top, though, those are awesome and show a great understanding of weight and form, even allowing for any exaggeration.

Here is some more recent stuff done by me. Illustrator, Photoshop, and a pencil. Florian Satzinger, and Creature Box are a couple of my favorite concept artists. I'll post more stuff later.

I like those ink and marker studies above. You've really found your style and voice! The painted looking cartoons in post 9 are better, in my opinion, than the earlier stuff simply because they have more color depth and thus more interest. Take the simplicity of a cartoon, and if the piece is a poster or frozen frame that people can look at for longer than 1/27 of a second like a cartoon's frames, then make sure it has visual interest enough to hold our attention.

Looking forward to more!

I thought I'd practice some gesture drawings from magazines at work this week. I'm not feelin' it much at all, that sucks. I brought the sketches into photoshop for some color; I might have used the brush too much...I like my previous life drawings a lot better, so I'll stick with life drawing that way. T'was a good trial run in the end.

Those gesture drawings look great! I also do a lot of those mostly drawing my classmates during boring classes. Keep an eye on your volumes and placement though. Sometimes you get a lttlie to wild with your lines. I'm looking forward to more gesture drawings!

Hey CA! It's has been a long time since I've updated my thread. Damn, almost two years...:( I had to get two jobs to catch up on my finances, but things are slowing down now, and I have more time to draw and concentrate on my long-term goal. I am rusty as hell, but I have a routine to get the ball rollin'. I'm applying for the VLP, in hopes that opportunity will enable me go to the next level. I would love to attend the Art Department online as well, because I know I need that level of training. I'm also building a brand new portfolio. I hope this year is better than the last six. Here are my latest studies.

another daily sketch at the bookstore today, before I had to go to work. I will have to study better gestural poses so my line work will improve. One page or two everyday, that's my goal.

Copying from the Vilppu gesture training dvd. this is how i initially got better at gesture sketching. concentrating on the rhythm of motion using lines, instead of details. details mess me up, especially when im trying to capture someone.

Here is another daily sketch I did after work last night. I wanted to go to Barnes and Nobles after my 2nd shift, and the place was CLOSED :*( So I went to Live action pose (?) and practiced some gesture stuff there. Long day that was. Is anyone in the NC area on CA going to the IGDA meet in Raleigh today? I will be there!

I have to work on my cylinders, so next time I'll probably draw a bunch of them. my gestures are looking deformed. also my line of action will have to be drawn better, because these poses look stiff. Or is it because I didnt draw from life this time?

Off to work today, cant wait till March..!

Two jobs have been wearing me down...going to quit the night job this month! More time to study and go to Artspace in Raleigh every week! More gestures from the bookstore from the past couple of days. I'm going to do better gestures from the front, and not drawing people from the back of their heads. Gesture drawing is pretty tough when you keep having to stare at people to understand their pose better. the fifth image on down is from a book called, "The Nude Figure". Great reference material!

Went to Raleigh last weekend to attend a figure drawing class. It seems to be the only figure drawing in the state. I have work on better rendering and my hands and feet. Drawing on toned paper is also very cool to study values better.

I went to Artspace for a life drawing class this week, and tried my hand on charcoal and pastel on charcoal paper. I've come to realize that I do not like charcoal paper. I think my poses communicate very well. I have to work harder on my anatomical studies though.
