I was very satisfied with Jason Chans Demo. He covered all the areas I would hope he'd have. It was great hearing him talk about colour which comes so effortless to him :).
I highly recommend this vid to all members here, and especially people starting in CA. My favourite thing about the vid though, was that he shows the value of studies in his ease of doing the painting. It really comes across.

And yeah, thanks Jason Chan & Manley for these :yayca:

I was more than happy with what I got when I bought this. I felt so much relief when I saw how quick and loose the initial sketches can be before still ending up with such an insane painting. I learnt that your concept drawings and pre-visualization sketches can be as rough as you like as long as you aid the development of the image. Details come later. It was also great to see how a master like Chan deals with colour.

Appreciate putting this out there, guys. I had a blast watching it (first, second, third, fourth and fifth time). And I'm sure I'll go back to it countless amounts of times when I start new images.

I really like this video because besides seeing Mr. Chan paint, it's always insightful hearing what are his thoughts during the painting. He gives a reason behind his design choices and like it's been said before, you can truly appreciate how his skills are based on the studies he has done early on. Even for people that don't know Painter at all o maybe barely like me, this video will greatly teach some good lessons about painting in general.

I believe this new videos are the way to go because of their low prices and easy distribution (no shipping costs). Thanks for the MB crew and Mr. Chan for putting it together. :yayca:

I learned a few things about the painter program from watching Jason's tutorial.
It was helpful to see what tools he uses and how he structures his paintings.
Great to see the process unfold. Definitely worth the 10 bucks!

I remember seeing Jason in Montreal, and watching him work there was amazing. I'm just ordered the download and it's transfering now, I know it will be very inspiring. Thanks for getting these together, JM, I can't wait for more in the future. Go CA!

Edit: I had problems retrieving the file on a MAC. It said I had to have the full version of quicktime to do the "save as a quicktime movie" feature. When I went to "save page as..." in the drop down menu, nothing saved to my HD. I only had I gues the trial version that comes with a MAC. Out of curiosity, is there an easier way to do this on a MAC. Video is great by the way, as I thought it would be (still watching it). Thanks.

Jason's video was fun and creative. I like how he broke down his process into a few different steps, even if it changes from time to time. for instance, starting with a loose gestural stage, checking for silhouette with solid blocks of value, and then finding emotional content with color. All the while staying loose and open to change. Finally, a lot of noodling. :)

he mentioned "edges" and their importance. he said he would touch on that later... but I don't remember him actually getting into it, which is something I would have loved to hear his thoughts on. I know at one point he said that he felt his painting was getting too soft so he switched to the chalk tool so he could vary edges. He mentioned that like other forms of contrast in the painting, (hue, value, etc) contrast in edges was key as well. I'm wondering if he had more ideas that he wanted to talk about but forgot to mention? Jason, maybe you could talk a bit about your ideas behind edge flow and using them in painting? would be cool to get a discussion going.

I know Sargent considered edge variation among some of the most important aspects in a good composition, but rarely can you find an artist who talks about it in great length. Perhaps this is something too arbitrary to nail down. I dunno.

Overall, the price was right, the painting was beautiful, and its nice to hear the humility in Jason's insightful words. Sounds like Massive black has some great artists both personally and professionally in their ranks. Hope to meet some of you guys someday.

Very great video! Good information. Love the sketchiness of it all.

It crashes at around 57-58 minutes. You hear Jason talking about using an overlay to bring out highlights, but the video has frozen. Anyone else have this problem?

Earendil: I think the file got corrupted on the server somehow because it was working fine for the first month or so. I uploaded a slightly different file and it seems to have fixed the issue.

If anyone else is having this problem please send me (aaron at massiveblack dot com) an email that includes your transaction number and I'll give you a link to the updated file.

Try using VLC mediaplayer (http://www.videolan.org/) if the video freezes in Quicktime. I know it isn't the optimal solution but it worked for me.

I'm currently working on my final project for my Digital Painting class, and so far this is the best help as far as using Painter X and digital painting altogether that I've gotten so far this semester! He doesn't go into too much depth on using the tools provided in Painter X, but he lends way more enlightenment to the painting process itself - which is what I've been looking for in my class all semester with no success.
Thank you, Jason - After watching the video I feel a lot more confident and comfortable with the potential result of my project.

Me too! Well, a little worse actually: The video doesn't just freeze, my entire computer crashes and I can't do anything, can't even get to the task manager, so I just have to hit reset to restart.. I've tried approximately three times now and have had to restart the computer each time.
I'm not very bothered about it because it's only the last two minutes or so I'm missing, but I'd still like to see the end..
I'll try VLC Mediaplayer to view the end though.. Thanks rubbadub!

Now.. About the vid itself: I love it! I think it's great and I learned tons from it, and it's really inspirational too.. Makes me want to go paint and do studies and all of that even more!
One thing that went a little too quick for me is how the rocks changed from being sketchy to being very detailed in a matter of seconds.. Because there was so much time spent on the character, I'd like to see a little more in depth how the rocks were created.. But there was probably just not enough time.

Anyways.. I learned heaps from it, took two pages of notes as well :P Great vid! I'll try to get something done in Painter again now I've seen Jason work with it..

Love
Marleen.

I actually learned a hell of a lot more than i thought i would from this, i went from being a total painter newbie to (well im only halfway through but give me a few more hours) having painted a piece that i was actually SATISFIED with.

Most tutorial vids in this pricerange only show how you do one thing, in this video you get to see everything jason uses in the entire piece, which is my favourite thing about the vid, by far. I learned so many new techniques its insane, oh and i went from hating painter, thinking it was the worst piece of crap ever made, to loving it =)

Thanks to everyone involved in making this vid, definetly worth the money, it saved me too many hours of hassle to count!

This was video was top notch . . . and I would agree with all of the positive comments above. I also learned a bit about using Painter and it's just so great to watch someone else work and describe the process as they go along. Great stuff, right price and no technical issues for me. Thank you.

i STRONGLY suggest this video for anyone who wants a quick understanding of how to use Painter.

The techniques in this video are some the best painter foundations out there. So if you want to learn how to paint awesomer + get an intro into painter. PICK THIS UP.

What davi said - times twenty.

This vid really, seriously helped me understand Painter. Of course, it is unnerving watching how fast Chan works in it - but after several viewings (and still reference it), I can't tell y'all how much it's helped.

Thanks to Jason Chan and Massive Black for putting out such an impressive video! Really amazed that one can just sketch something like that at a whim. I always have it in my head to plan everything out beforehand, which can be pretty inefficient and unproductive.

It was interesting to hear his/your thoughts on the design process and absolutely great to watch him colour the piece (beautiful colours, btw.). I also found the initial part about searching for a good composition by testing different silhouettes and shapes really sweet.

Even so, I would have liked to see a more structured approach from him - like he mentions he does with his illustrations. But maybe that's in the next part.

Thanks again. :)

Great video, although he uses Photoshop CS3 not painter... for some reason i was under the impression that he was using painter from what people said...

anyways! totally worth the 14$ I took away a great amount of important things from this video... coming from the traditional paint medium myself to the digital medium!

Thank you! :mittenbop:

Racasdorph: Jason Chan has three demonstrations out. Two of them are Photoshop, and one is Painter. This one, the first one, was done in Painter.

Pawkfox: There are images of all the movies at the dvd.massiveblack.com webpage. We're slowly adding trailers to our back catalog... hopefully we'll get to this one in the not-to-distant future.

I just got this one the other day. Holy crap... Its like everything I was missing about digital painting was explained in this. I LOVE watching people work, and this was like the ultimate in that experience. I will be getting more of these as time goes on...
Thanks Jason! Maybe some day I'll get to actually talk to ya haha!

What a fantastic video. I only wish it had been longer! I would gladly sit through every minute of this process in real time.

Great video, the only thing is the oil variant he creates just isn't working for me. I don't know if the brush tracking settings are drastically different or what but in the end I found by decreasing the opacity, upping the resat a bit, and lowering the bleed has resulted in one of the most effective brushes in my arsenal. Anyways, good stuff!
