Hello everyone,
so this finally is the first thread displaying my artwork here at conceptart.org. I've been following the forums from 2004 to 2005, somehow lost contact, but now I'm back – not just reading, but posting.
28 years old now, coming from Germany's capital Berlin. I'm working as a concept artist for various german computer games, but in my spare time I'd like to work on stuff some might consider as fine art. Those paintings and dawings mean much more to me than my daily jobs, though these are great and exciting, too. But, if someone wants to know me a little better, these paintings are probably the more interesting starting point.
In 1989/1990 West and East Germany re-united. The communist regime in the eastern part of our country vanished, people pulled down that seperated West and East Berlin. The "Palast der Republik", the former site of the communist pariament, closed down. In the years after, that building was partly deconstructed, and afterwards it became one of many spots in the city, where anything seemed to be possible: Improvisated and professional art exhibitions, demostrations, illegal graffitti bombings, artificial mountains and subterranean lakes, multimedia and party. Mixed people of all ages and from all over the world visited the Palast der Republik for numerous reasons, they all were amazed by the raw power of such an enormous site. The people took back power over space in that area, it was (in my opinion), one of the most vibrant places in this ever-changing city. There it was, right in the middle of one of the most important places in the whole republic, going on everybodys nerves who wanted the city clean and restored like in the 20ies.
In the winter of 2006, the german parliarment finally decided to deconstruct the Palast der Republik and to replace it with a reconstruction of the old Kaiser's Palace. Of couse, that descision was a descision of power, not of reason.
Two days later I was out on the streets, painting. I never started paintings like these before, until then I was just doing illustrations. I never felt the inner NEED do start a series of paintings like that. But this time I knew: What was happening right around my corner was living history in the shape of architecture. It was aesthetics, it was politics, it was the long-term consequence of a peaceful revolution that took place 15 years ago, it was something meaningful that was worth to be notified.
So this was the first painting, done at -14 (Celsius). I was almost freezing to death, while my girlfriend brought me some tea, and my colors seemed to freeze right before my eyes.

(Oil on Canvas, 120x140 cm or something like that).
Others followed.

I'm still working on that series. It takes a lot of time to demolish that building. This one, for example, is from Summer 2007, and its actually the smallest one (60x80 cm), sorry for the crappy photograph:

Some more architecture, but without any political/social background. They are from the Annecy region, France, Summer 2007. Some of you might know that place because of the animation festival.
