Teen Challenge #38: Siege of Mars

Hey Guys,

That last challenge was a ripper!
I figured this one should be more scene based since the last couple have been more character oriented.

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Siege of Mars, what will mars look like? Is it terra-formed? Colonised? Inhabited by aliens? The siege part needs to be contain some sort of structure, city or the planet itself.

Please add a small description or storyline. We don't want a five page essay but make it nice, brief, and to the point. Especially if there is something in your design which needs explaining.

Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges. TRY AND DO THIS, it means you've finished a piece which is a big boost to the ego and skills.

The Deadline:
Saturday, December 1st at midnight PST
Two weeks. Giving time for finishing up WIP's.

Ok looks like I'm first to post anything, here's my start, obviously its just starting, that thing that looks like a flying blob will be a space ship and the dangling string things will have soldiers on. Anyway any crits are appreciated. Also it's nice to see an environment on here again.

hmm.. i think i still add some characters because i'm not that into techtonic art. ;) i already have some nice ideas of some cute little fluffy marsians that lived there once in a time... but at the moment i'm still occupied with my gunslinger though the voting is already over :D i just want it to be finish.. i've spent so much time in it x] greez, jmh

here's a quick quick overpaint... it's very blurry but i hope it helps you.. first of all i wouldn't put in a heaven with filter options in ps.. even u have transformed it perpektively it has still not the corrrect depth.. so i added a gradient of reds. the part between the two hills has created a wrong illusion i think so u cannot see the distance. but i like the shapes of ur terran buildings and also that u added grey to the depth in ur pic. its alot.. i know, im sorry for that.
maybe u should take some references maybe from mountains, like i do, so you can create a new composition but with the safety of that ref.

i think it's quite a taff topic.. i'm not very into environments so i first crawl myself through google pictures ;D until i post my first wip.

nice topic! but i'm not sure if i will join this round... my trial versions of photoshop ends one day after teen challenge #37 and i don't know if i have the time to make something with watercolors or oils... :(

andon hristov: No these challenges like all the other weekly challenges to my knowledge are just done to help us improve our art, to get crits on our work and to allow other people to view what we've created. If you're looking for compensation for your work I would say look in the Job listings page

Or enter one of the larger challenges on these sites, I think they usually offer some kind of prize but I'm not sure if any are running at the moment.

I have also updated my entry but it's still complete garbage and it won't be my final, I will have a completely new piece up by then although I might not be able to find time to colour it so it may just be a pencil piece, also where are the rest of the entries, I'm sure people could do with some environment practice.

This is the first time I've ever photoshop'd a rocky terrain, normally I like sticking with black and white buildings because I'm a pansy. So crit is more than welcome :0

Danaaaaa I like what you have, the rock is looking pretty good where you've started to finish it. Towards the right, though, it looks like the ground just like... drops off.

Methinks it would look cooler with a more dramatic sky.

Allright here's my final, gave up on the other and did this in a couple of hours, it's not as ambitious as the other but I was never going to finish that.
Anyway hope some other people manage to finish their entry's.
~Danuh, we both seem to be trying reasonably similar environments, I would try to offer some advice on the rocks but the style you're painting them is very different from the way i've done it but anyway the part that you've rendered properly looks pretty good.

Oh and uh- about the dudes crawling around in the back ->
They're Scouters, and their purpose is to protect the city in which they tread. But recently there have been troubles in controlling the beasts so instead of protecting the citizens from outside forces and not letting anyone in, they're not letting anyone out trapping them within their own home.
