EOW#70 The Inferno POLL
The winner of the EOW#69 Milliways restaurant at the end of the Universe is Gaius…. Wish I had a prize to award…gaius is becoming a Champion
For this Challenge we Had 38 images started, 34 going to poll. D Several first time entries, WELCOME! several returning past winners. WOOT
And two that nearly got rejected because they made several entries on several posts… (cough edujante, nram, cough ) make my life easy please peoples.
3people did not outside host their image They will not got to poll. Sorry to be a hardass about this but with 38 entries I can’t be bothered to rehost your image because you didn’t read the much repeated directions.
One was unfinished
Lots of beautiful work and a great round
New Round IS ON!
EOW# 71 City of Artists
"It appeared half burnt-up-charcoal, half metal-soup. Engine still blazing hot from years of operation, this monsterous vessel had plowed through half the city leaving an inferno in it's wake. The combined heat of the entry and the crash was slowly melting the underside. With such a large part of the city now in flames rescuing the crew seemed unimportant to most, even if they had survived."
Ok, here's my take on the subject. I was thinking of doing a sort of video game environment. This scene would be when the hero is about to go through the gates of Hell to battle Satan. Before he enters, the gates close, and the hero has to battle a couple of giant skeletons that reanimate from their chained state. As soon as he or she defeats the skeletons, the gates open and he enters another level.
Madkweer artist _Attached Image, welcome to EOW. Nice try but the images needed more time and attention, as well as an outside host
Now approaching Geo -con mining facility also know as the inferno.
Not very original, but Dante inspired me :
"Through me the way is to the city dolent;
Through me the way is to eternal dole;
Through me the way among the people lost.
All hope abandon, ye who enter in!"
Attached..too bad it’s a nice image
I almost didn’t take this to poll, because you said it’s a speedie and didn’t mark it final. I do blame you…:P
The older ones always knew. Makai'li would get louder, and begin to argue with everyone. Sam'pai was the same, only he would take a swing at the children with his old walking stick. Sooner or later someone would be sent into the mountain, and sure enough, the Inside Earth would show its light through the cracks, and a strong hunting party would go to the middle of the island. The Great Wheel would turn, and the Waters would fill the cavern with steam, and the elders would be at peace again.
Description: Obviously one of Krieg's goons had gotten there before me. There would be no time to look for the files if I wanted to keep breathing. I got low to the floor and started crawling the hell out of there.
Digitally Dumbfounded –Attached image too bad I kinda like it
Inferno Used Auto Sales: We're burning up the competition!
In the deepest pit by fires as hot as the sun lies his temple.
I imagined a world of fire and how it would look, and what could happen in there. So here's a fireproof pirate with a burning sword fighting the FlameTiger

Particularly like the ones from Han and JessiBean.
I also went to the wolfje sketchbook and that really made me cheer up! So cute.
Uhm, I assume I screwed up outside hosting :(.
Though I did put my picture on photobucket and the uploaded from direct link, but I suppose that just uploads from there to here and .. isnt`t outside hosting.
Sorry to ask stupid questions, :upset: ... but how do I do this correctly?
Meh, I really would have loved to participate, .. even without a chance to win.:D
November 15th, 2007, 04:43 PM
Ooo, lots of good stuff. That's a tough one. ConceptBloke's piece got my vote - closely followed by jfwalls' and JessiBean's.

November 15th, 2007, 07:34 PM
my vote went to Corrick. again his image sucked my eyes outa my head :P
although Hyver you would have got my vote had your image given off a little more heat...it is very red but doesnt feel glowing hot to me.

November 15th, 2007, 08:06 PM
happy thoughts go towards Mitze, Han, Peetsbeets, Corrick, Void, Thalion, Hallo
, RogerAdams, Yanimator, Wolf of course, Edujante and Deadred!
Having a hard time picking one out...
November 15th, 2007, 09:44 PM
my vote went to Edujante altough it was a very hard choise... so many good works :D wish i could vote more than once... so many great entries...
Sorry for the double post chaosrocks, and thanks for including me in the final poll. wont happen again... i think hehe
November 15th, 2007, 10:24 PM
So many good entries this round! Nearly voted for csoldier7 for the fire alone but my vote went to Edujante-I think his entry captured the mood of the book more so than the rest. Also liked Mitze, Dabble, Thalion, Jfwalls....
Hopefully I'll have time to participate in the next one!
November 15th, 2007, 11:01 PM
Corrick got my vote. Great composition and the grand architecture feel reminded me of Tinfoil's work. Great job!
November 15th, 2007, 11:20 PM
Edujante, has my vote this round. nice sense of design and i like the feeling of doom surrounding the img. aweomse use of values too to draw the eye right to the center of focus. sneaky use of the eow title too. only crit is i would've like to see other colors =D
RogerAdams, nice usage of colors/texture to show depth. the mix of cool and warm is very nicely done and pleasant to look at.
Gaius, u did it again this round! LOL man i dig your stuff. the painting says inferno but seeing this is an environment of the week and your image focused more on the 2 humans/subjects, i had to give my vote to Edujante instead. ^^; but frackin awesome work.
JessiBean, original. =D you are probably the only one who was really thinking outside the box this round. gave me a good chuckle.
Thalion, epic, looks like a movie poster! i like the overall image and the description/text adds a lot. nice work!
Corrick, great use of shapes, and POV. the little bit of the forest/sky showing int he back there really adds a lot. nice values too. always interested to see what u come up with.
Hyver, i commented on your pic previously already. really dig it. almost had my vote this round.
hats off to everyone else. sorry if i didn't get around to comment on everyone's. this round had a huge turnout!
November 15th, 2007, 11:26 PM
November 15th, 2007, 11:45 PM
oops... sorry about that. Too late to add me to the poll?
November 16th, 2007, 12:03 AM
Im sorry yeah really it is. I mean I could. but do you have any idea how inportant it is in the art world it is to follow format instructions?...and what a Pain in the ass. it woul dbe at this point?
you won't make that mistake again. It's a sweet piece though. And I will leave it in this thread for folks to see adn comment on if they choose.
try again..you have potential
November 16th, 2007, 12:57 AM
no problem, it was fun and good practice and that's exactly what I did it for. Thanks for replying ^^
November 16th, 2007, 01:13 AM
I voted for Void but I was also leaning alot towards Hyver's. Alot of really good entries, and if I had something new to say about them I would, so I'll just say nice job everyone. I really enjoyed this one.
November 16th, 2007, 01:52 AM
Wow single-choice voting is so hard.. i'm completely torn between voting for Corrick, Edujante and Hyver (votes for these based on enviro design)
and i really like ConceptBloke, JessiBean and Hallo's entries too!
November 16th, 2007, 06:35 AM
Wow so many cool Entries. First of all big thanks Chaos for setting up the poll, must have been quite tedious.
Ok many apologies for anyone I dont mention but there is just too many this round. :)
Hyver Nice work but a little flat , maybe push the contrasts a little to seperate the background, mid ground and foreground.
ConceptBloke Fiery, nice speed paint, love the leaf brush! lol just kidding.
Corrick Brillant image as always. Would have gotten my vote if it hadnt been for your lava, lava is sort of gloopy and yours is bit too watery. Also in your image it seems too cool compared to the cast light on the face.* which is brillant btw*It isnt strong enough as the light source. The cool section of the forest through the gap is inspired. :)
Special mention to Hallo, jessiebean, RogerAdams,Edujante, deadred
really enjoyed studying your images .
Ok Finally Yanimator got my vote. Lovely dynamic image. Indiana jones, adventure inspired , I am sucker for anything cinematic.
Though I dont like the rope bridge its scale bugs me. I think its because the sense of depth in the image isnt consistant , what I mean is that the rock stucture on the sides could be brought forward into the foreground more and that would help with the scale of the bridge, then that frames the middle ground and the aircraft. The arches in the middle are brillant btw.
Wolfje brillant, your sketchbook rocks too.
November 16th, 2007, 06:48 AM
Edujante, high rez pls, without border and a small mark in the right corner.
I wont spread it anywhere, it will serve ass my BG.
1024x1280 and 1440x900.
Internet ex 5.0 laggs in school.
November 16th, 2007, 08:03 AM
CorrickWould have gotten my vote if it hadnt been for your lava, lava is sort of gloopy and yours is bit too watery.
I think that is water pouring into the lava pit to cool the lava...thats what it sounds like in his description anywayz :P
November 16th, 2007, 08:21 AM
I'll be damned ;) I'd have voted for at least 5 entries if I could.
Edujante, yours was my fav, the mood, the design, the light...
Yanimator : Great use of colors and light.
Deadred : Fine piece, love the backgound.
Dabble : Very heroic pic, I really like the Head/Gate design.
Han : I just think the white "sky" drew too much attention and harms the reading of your pic.
Great job everyone, I wish I had more time to paint. The topic was really cool.
November 16th, 2007, 08:39 AM
I think that is water pouring into the lava pit to cool the lava...thats what it sounds like in his description anywayz :P
My fault sorry dude never noticed the description. Ignore me. * skuttles away sheepishly * " baa!"
November 16th, 2007, 08:57 AM
I VE had doubts to make my decisions...
I vote Yanimator, like very much compo and colour!
I ll like to spend more time drawing the hell, but what the hell, next time.(uauh ive done a joke in english...)
Thanks of course for the crits!:teeth:
Diphalia: heres the high res. link!!
November 16th, 2007, 10:04 AM
Gaius, no worries, it is indeed water, but you'd be absolutely correct if it wasn't... no one wants thin lava. :) I debated on what would come out of the mouth and went a different direction.
I'm still vacillating on my vote, too many amazing entries. Little disappointed that Nightblue didn't make it, I was an admirer... look forward to the next round, anyway. I'll post up when I get a chance.
November 16th, 2007, 02:10 PM
This vote was a lot harder than i thought.
Gaius,Yanimator,JessiBean,Hyver all could get the vote and close by are Edujante,Peetsbeets etc i stop now or i will just be copying and pasting all the names. I went for Yanimator in the end i just tried to think inferno and look at my 4 fav and see which seemed nearest to inferno.
Love the flames JessiBean
November 16th, 2007, 07:19 PM
Amazing round, everyone!
Demiurgic, nice take on the concept, but the forms themselves seem undeveloped and vague. The heat of the environment is handled well but it looks like it needs a little more impact damage from the craft overall, debris strewn about, a crater, I dunno, something.
Timothee, nice rendering, very well handled. When I first looked at this I immediately thought they were giant skeletons, from the viewer's vantage point. My only nitpick would be the skeletons. After significant decay, they'd mostly fall apart, and not so cleanly suspended. Still, creepy-cool.
Hyver, one of my personal favorites, I love the sprawling nature of the composition. The eye travels perfectly along the lava flow, and the splashy touches are flawless. :)
Sublime, this is so vague it's almost impossible to tell if it's a glowing vortex in clouds, or a pit in the ground. Either way it's definitely eye-catching and I can appreciate the impression of sheer size, but the actual firey part is minimized, banished to the corner.
ConceptBloke, near photographic rendering. I can feel the heat coming off the flames, very nice. The elements definitely speak to an inferno's desperation as well, wolves escaping the flames, etc...
Mitze, the detail on the ships is insane, very nicely done. The background is a bit vague, but who cares. I dig it.
Dabble, this one creeped me out. The landscape is wickedly bleak, though the crevices in the cliff face could use a little more contrast, to tell where the breaks are.
Han, excellent multi-layered scene, although the floating island the demon is standing on seems a little shoved in there. The chains holding it down need perspective shifts in scale, they're the same size no matter where they are in space, but it's a little thing. Great atmosphere.
Iwantjelly, like I said before, well-deserved praise on the complete turnaround from the first attempt to this piece.
PeetsBeets, honestly, this one suffered from a lack of color. Fire needs temperature, and if it's red, yellow, blue, green, whatever, it needs that color. It's definitely an inferno, just not a very threatening one. :)
warry, this would've been perfect if you had put a line of ants leading into the mouth of the cave. The elements in the composition give the impression of a very micro scale. Interesting piece, love the details in the foreground.
Nightblue, even though it's not up there, it's a very well-rendered work. The flames especially deserve applause, and the scene overall has an ancient quality to it. The spirits in the fire are well done and pull at my affection for "Night on Bald Mountain". The depth and dimension to everything is just fine, don't kick yourself for perspective. Very nice!
Sali, that head coming out of the ground is creepy. The obscured bits are especially effective, lends a ghostly quality to the whole thing. The composition is a little too right-weighted, since the spikes on the left seem too much of an afterthought, either too symmetrical or just out of place.
Delmar, it's hard to tell what's going on here. The hatch texturing is a little distracting, and makes the image look a little grainy. If that was intentional, great, but I'm of the mind that texture for its own sake is unnecessary. The fire and smoke is well handled though, the feeling of weight and movement is perfectly described in the falling fireball.
[void], very cool leggy walker things. Love the depth of field in this one, it gives the feeling of a very primordial landscape. The only thing I can pick at is the color of the sky, it's too soft.
spitch, death and destruction, this says it all. Eek. :) I like it.
TLL, the perspective is fine, but the fire needs a lot more contrast. Right now it seems too dim. Also, the buildings on the right and left don't look as though they're receiving any light from the scene's light sources. They're too evenly illuminated.
Diphalia, good, explosive action, but the black fog on the lava bursting out is obscuring the brightness. Dunno why it's there, unless it's smoke, in which case make it ash (which has a more voluminous, thick appearance) and push it above the flame.
Arttourney, love the textures in this piece. Creates a very tactile, visceral feeling when looking at it. Very nice.
Thalion, saturate!!! Otherwise it's a great painting, I feel for the guy having to deal with all that. Unless he rules it... in which case I have no sympathy. :)
RedFive, I never could comment on abstract art, but it looks cool.
hallo, sweet, impressionistic take on the topic. Very nice, it describes the chaos and unfocused nature of an inferno to a T.
JessiBean, like I said, funny. Like, laugh-out-loud funny. I know a guy who would buy that trailer in a heartbeat. Beautiful rendering.
Gaius, magnificent as always. After repeat viewings this almost looks like you built it in miniature and took a picture, the textures are amazing. Again, I love the sci-fi take and the drama of the scene.
Csoldier7, this one actually surprised me, I wasn't expecting anything like it. It's a very unique approach to this round, artistically and stylistically.
RogerAdams, I dig the massive edifices.
Yanimator, got my vote. While this isn't your usual exacting depiction of detail, it's easily the standout in the crowd and one of the more intricately fashioned compositions. Bravo!
jfwalls, if "Inferno" purely meant bright, than this would be the clear winner, it's the brightest of any entry. The rendering is beautiful but I'm a little hard-pressed to find any actual fire in it.
Peg, this is a great cracked and broken landscape and the color scheme is very well handled in it. The sharpness of everything stands out perfectly.
nram, the attention to detail in all of the spikes and jagged rocks is impressive. The lava flow could use a little more brightness and saturation in it, so it looks more like lava, not... oatmeal. :)
Wolfje, it took me a minute to find the flaming sword, obviously because of all the fire around it, but once I did it all came together. I'm not sure if this is insane or perfect. Time will tell.
Tigerazzo, I'm left with the burning desire to know what those machines are doing. I dig the perspective and environment, always loved a good canyon scene.
edujante, I can't hate you for being amazing, but I can grumble about it to anyone who will listen. I love the atmosphere. It's so GRIM! The brush strokes seem so basic yet the overall image pulls together into something perfectly composed.
deadred, the scale of the image is massive, I like it. Two things though, the top left antenna structure is a little underdeveloped, and looks like it needs more detail relative to the scene. Also, the grid lines on the walkway coming towards the viewer are off. It's a small thing, but enough to throw off the perspective. Other than that the color scheme and composition are awesome.
November 16th, 2007, 09:37 PM
Delmar, your entry got my vote. Certainly my style, and very infernoey. I'm not sure where other people's lava comes into the inferno picture, maybe it's because I didn't read dante. But I'd say redfive is my second pick, your entry is very stylized love it (although you should have named the coffee shop peet's coffee :D) Corrick, didn't like your WIP but love your final entry. The description makes the image very powerful. Warry, like your atmosphere but the background mountains are just meh. Sublime kinda liked your entry, but I hate that font. RogerAdams, you have the best use of font and layout, I know this isn't a design forum, but still... Yanimator, great great entry, and your font matches real nice. NRAM, all caps are the way to go but try to keep even margins around it, and why is your lava so reflective? Like the concept though. Awesome topic of the week ;D
November 17th, 2007, 08:13 AM
Loads of good entries and a huge round! :)
I voted Yanimator for a very sweet and infernoey image. I particulary like the structures in there.
Corrick as a close second for a great concept and description (and a kickass image at that).
I also liked Iwantjellys take, very foreboding(sp?)
November 17th, 2007, 09:31 PM
This round was an inferno in itself - the devil's nightmare, to turn it into a phrase.
My vote goes to [void] for a smoldering display of a unique volcanic landscape. The runner-up: RogerAdams - Another great environment.
The EOW has bellowed the smoke.
Keep doing you
November 18th, 2007, 02:40 PM
Yeah, I definitely agree w/ peg, Yanimator took it. His composition, detail and use of the actual scenery from the text is superior in comparison to others. However I do also like [void]s, and csoldier7's. Good show everybody
November 19th, 2007, 05:23 AM
Corrick, Yup, that's actually supposed to be some kind of ashes.
I think I'm gonna redraw this some time, I'm not pleased with the results
It should be thicker and darker, but I didn't think vey much of that right then.
I didn't look at any ref's I just went staight away fom my mind, thought out a scene, and tried to visualize it.
THank you very much :D
November 19th, 2007, 09:30 AM
just wanted to thank my hardcore fans for their vote.. you ROWK! ;)
congrats yanimator! - looks like a fun place to play!!!
November 19th, 2007, 08:01 PM
It was really hard choosing just one this week, but i went with Han. The piece had a nice composition and style.
November 22nd, 2007, 07:24 PM
thanks for the votes and comments everyone!
