so yeah, finally something i'm an expert at. :P

Check eno's ambient catalogue ... starting with ambient 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all very quiet and nice. music for films and the apollo ones are stellar as well

Stars of the lid: highly, highly recommended

tim hecker and boards of canada i will second as being amazing / transportational for ambient music. try to preview before you buy tho if possible.

Other notable acts to check:
Kawabata Makoto
Lichens
William Basinski (particularly his disintegration loops)
Eluvium
charlambides
bardo pond
Gas
Growing (omg i love growing!)
Jackie O' MF (MF is an explitive... great music though!)
Max Richter
Robert Fripp "let the power fall" album, among others
experimental audio research
sonic boom

and my personal, all time favorite:
VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA

Really the best thing to do is to find some podcasts for this type of music and then jot down the names. this website, http://myrecordcollection.org (http://myrecordcollection.org/genres/ambient.html) is a tremendously invaluable resource.

Thanks to both of you! Boards of Canada sound really good, so I'll be getting some of that next.

The song from the Babel Soundtrack was 'Only Love Can Conquer Hate' by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I have some more to add:

Cinq - Spillover, Spleepy Eyes, and Dan (these are like sill water with drops, waterfalls, etc. Like what I have attached)
Devil May Cry 2 Soundtrack - Mission Start (only the first 11 seconds)
DJ Krush - Song 1
DJ Sasha - Bloodlock, Requiem, Golden Arm, Wavy Gravy (or include the whole Airdrawndagger album if you like)
ICO ~ Melody in The Mist - Heal
ICO ~ Melody in The Mist - Continue
ICO ~ Melody in The Mist - Collapse
ICO ~ Melody in The Mist - -You Were There-
Linkin Park - My December
Resident Evil 4 Soundtrack - Serenity (this plays in some Merchant shops, sounds a little sorrowful)
Resident Evil 4 Soundtrack - Save Theme (focus less on the leading piano them and more on the backround sounds, they are an example of EXACTLY what I'm looking for)

I'll mention Garden View from the Homeworld soundtrack again, just because it's probably the most beautiful song I've heard. These ones are a bit off-course, as they have more movement, but they are pretty peaceful:

Massive Attack - Weather Storm
Massive Attack - Heat Miser (this reminds me of the Greyjacks (http://www.answers.com/topic/334536353534-jpg) from Resistance: Fall of Man, I guess because of the heat coming from them in this concept)
Gorillaz - El Manana (kind of, it has that peacefulness)

I'd also love to add DJ Krush's 'Pretense', but it doesn't exactly fit.

There's more..but i'm tired, good night !

Thank you Daniel! Can you please post the rest? I'd love to have it. :)

Thank you.

No, it's not what I'm looking for. The SotC soundtrack is epic, I'm looking for the sort of stuff I listed in my first post. Nice avatar though. :)

[edit] I just started listening to it, and man, that soundtrack is EPIC. Especially 'The Opened Way', in my opinion.

DanielC - Wow. Nice collection. I love the Ochre ones.

The most meditative music I've ever listened to:

Robert Rich & Lisa Moscow - Yearning
Texhnolyze OST 2 - The Man of Men (few songs)

They give the feeling of sleeping in some peaceful oriental garden.

oh.. and Solaris OST which has a bit different mood.

Danke. I've heard FSoL's work for WipEout 2097, and I really, really like Landmass. 'We Have Explosive', though, is a harder sound (which I also like). The only thing I can remember of Papua New Guinea from Fusion is that I liked it, haha. I'll definitely look for their other work and all those artists you mentioned. :)

Micaiah - Those do sound quite nice, and good. Cheers!

Clint Mansell does a lot of movie and TV soundtracks im sure, theres one tune on the Fsol album where it feels like your just wandering through the jungle on the set of Predator as theres a couple of samples from the movie! Love it ;)

I just looked again at DanielC list and saw Aphex Twin - Selected Ambiant Works Vol. 1 & 2. I wouldn't call it peaceful music. Most of the songs are dark, disturbing and someties a bit psychodelic. For example Tassels.

http://www.dizzler.com/music/Aphex_Twin/Tassels

Of course it's not bad for certain moods but I doubt if it would make you relaxed :D.

World's End Girlfriend - We Are The Massacre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H5ERTHCJRI)

The video may not be peaceful, but the music is :P

Farvus - I find that the album fits into this genre quite well.
serhc - That video is powerful. I like the music as well, although it gets pretty noisy towards the end.

Is there a name for this genre of music? There seems to be more of it than I thought.

And I wonder, is there's anything out there that almost perfectly matches Wandering Flame and Garden View? The stuff you guys have been giving is great though.

Yes. It's all ambient music. Search under that word and you will find lots of this kind of stuff.

I listened to Wandering Flame and Garden View. Something similar would be maybe:

Robert Rich - Inner Landscapes (http://www.last.fm/music/Robert+Rich/Inner+Landscapes) - there are samples under this link.

EDIT: Oh. Look also for Steve Roach music.

Jabo - Thanks, I'll look for it.

The entire Damnation album by Opeth. They're my favorite band. This music is very peaceful but the lyrics aren't entirely... happy.
This album is VERY melodic but they're other albums are much heavier. Mikael Akerfeldt is one of the most talented vocalists I've ever heard. His growls are unique and impressive and his clean vocals are even better!
This is there most popular mellow song:

DJ Krush - Dig This Vibe
Massive Attack - Teardrop
Massive Attack - Group Four
Massive Attack - Black Milk

Jake Kobrin - Wow, that's powerful! I'll have a look for it.

Dan Bird - Nice! That video made me hungry. I added all the tracks to my list and will check out those sites too. Cheers!

DJ Krush - Dig This Vibe
Massive Attack - Teardrop
Massive Attack - Group Four
Massive Attack - Black Milk

I actually think Black Milk is an extremely dark song, and I want to use it for a Silent Hill music video. Group Four is an enigmatic puzzle that I will not solve for many, many years. I love it. And Teardrop is nice, but not what I'm aiming for with this thread. I'll definitely check out Dig This Vibe, however.

go to last.fm
search for like-artists of any one of these groups listed above that you like
it will create a radio station based on artists that are similar
write down the artists you like as they pop up
buy their shit
its that simple

some things i recommend:
nin- still
nin- ghosts
telefon tel aviv
fridge
tycho
boy in static
philip glass
clutchy hopkins
blockhead
bonobo
cinematic orchestra
lovage
mick turner
mum
sigur ros
mogwai
black moth super rainbow
oval
broadway project
xella

these i recommend because they dont have vocals and are mostly ambient
but i can name a whole bunch of groups that play more traditional instruments (guitar, bass, drums) that have vocals that are really mellow.
elliot smith, iron & wine, jack johnson, kohiba, sia, etc.
that list could go on and on.
if you wan that one, let me know

Max Challie
May 13th, 2008, 02:19 PM
No, I'm not really looking for traditional stuff. But thanks for that list and the Last.fm suggestion, really really much. :)
