let's put it this way:
are there any other jobs than comic book illustrator or game/film concept artist?

That's a perfect question.

I'm considering about doing my own work. I've sold more work than I can keep up with. Everyone will tell you that you can't make much on your own, but I think that if you got time, money and the drive,...take the chance ..who knows?

Currently I do concept art for games, but I really am considering doing my own thing. But I'm my biggest enemy. I'm sooo afraid of failing and wasting time and money.
Living in California is not cheap, nor is it easy, artists are a dime a dozen here.

So... I guerss it comes down to what you think is worth your time. Either you go for it or you don't.

Your art can be comissioned(erh... not sure what I wrote here :D), I means some people can call you to do some thing (mostly what I seel these time..). Could be anything... a painting on a wall, a tatoo, a "special" logo, "different" concept art , graffiti... or you can try to sell yourself in expo(real life expo, web site...), it's open to you. The main problem is that you're probably not gonna sell each month. And it could be frustrating that you can't sell what's your best piece since no one want it :D
Comission work is not really different from concept-art or illustration... you're a bit more free, but not many.

I had a teacher that was a set painter for films...he even worked on X2.....
I suppse that'd be an area of emplyment open to painters....
where to start, and how to break in, I have no idea.....it's an option though.
