When painting in oils, (alla prima, direct) I tried to just put the paint down in one stroke and leave it alone. I noticed that at the beginning of the stroke I put down lots of color but that the brush empties out very quicklytowards the end of the stroke. Especially when painting without a medium and using the consistency that comes straight out of the tube. Anyone have any advice/tips as to how the brush should be loaded with paint or how I should make my brushwork better. I am trying to work in the fashion of Sargent and Richard Schmid.

grab a lot of paint and maybe vary up your hand pressure is all i can think of. Sargent supposedly squeezed out paint the size of baseballs and would use it all up

Use brushes three times bigger than you think you need. Vary the pressure (usually increasing) and roll it sometimes. If you are trying to make marks like Sargent use long britlse brushes and keep the paint oil rich. Most important of all is THREE TIMES BIGGER BRUSHES THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED.
J.W.Waterhouse gave the same advice when he taught at the acedemy.
