Meant to be?

I'm currently feeling pretty down and I have been for a while now, I've always been obsessed with beeing "the best" or atleast really good at everything I do and I couldn't imagine Myself growing old not being "someone" who accomplished "something" with his life. And I am very self-critical btw.

The reason I'm posting this is simply to get some advice from people who have already made the transformation from beginner to master.

I'm browsing the forums here, alot in "the best of CA" section and see artwork that completly blows my mind. Pure talent and people who really dedicate their lives for their love of art.

As for me and people in general, do you guys believe that certain people were born to be artists? Or is it hard work that got them to where they are?

Am I wasting my time trying to getter better drawing? How do you know what you're supposed to do with your life?

I draw and create my 3D images around the clock, every day, all day and I am 20 years old. What if I turn 30-40 etc. and still have accomplished nothing as great as the ones I look up to? Am I wasting my life? Am I wasting my youth?

I know it takes alot of hard work wich is why I'm doing nothing but creating images all day, never socializing with people or getting a girlfriend and when I'm doing a bad drawing I'm going crazy. What if this isn't meant to be for me?

I'd love to see what the "talented" people was drawing like after a year or so, to compare. Maybe show a timeline or something.



I love art, I love creating "art" and looking at these amazing images, but I'f I'm never going to get there, I don't want to waste my life chasing it.

Well you've only been drawing about 3 months. I'm 15, been drawing, half-seriously, around 3 years. Drawn all my life, and seriously about 1.5 years.

You haven't been going long enough to really know, I don;t think. Right now, I know for a fact I'll be an artist. I can tell. I don't know if you'll be able to in another year, or 2, or maybe even 5. It varies. But I'm a believer in that you can do anything you set your mind to; I know there are some things that really make others more aptly suited for something, but in the end, hard work pays more than innate talent does.

It's the journey not the destination. I think it's more important to consider what you enjoy doing than where you want to be going - If you enjoy doing it then you'll put in more effort than other people and you'll end up going as far as you can with it. 'Talent' is just another name for the love of a thing.

You're 20 and you've been drawing for three months - stop worrying about getting old and not achieving anything! INFACT: I think possibly the number one thing that holds a lot of people back from achieving their goals, is worrying about whether they pursuing the right goal the right way, rather than spending that time working. Stop worrying, start working! - Like the Nike motto: just do it.

Adding to what Elwell said, a social life is one of the most integral parts to an artists life, for example, what will you do when you score a great job offer and they ask for an interview in-person? You could say it'll be no problem but thats easier said than done for people with very little social contact.

There is nothing like "Ment to be"...only people without enough ambition use that term...

btw.: I don`t think there is something like a master ... not in art ... as Puck said...its the journey... if you just like to be at the destination and not enjoying the walk you might choose another path...

dooooooooon't compare your stuff with other peoples work, only compare it with what you have done in the past. We're all going to end up as worms meat someday no matter what you accomplish in life. Just sit back, relax, and take it all in one sip at a time.

The world is populated with people who don’t become rock stars. Their lives aren’t wasted. Why should your happiness be pinned upon reaching something so difficult to achieve?

I’m no master and I’m no rock star, I’m just someone who kept plugging at art away until I got a job. You can do the same.

Balance is the key to happiness. The obsessive folks who master a skill by neglecting everything else life has to offer aren’t necessarily leading happy lives.
