This was too cute an idea to pass up. But I got too carried away and spent too much time on it. :< Gotta learn to speed things up a bit.

this topic reminds me strangely of the movie Pleasantville. It was really fun to do :)

I love the cat. The puffed up fur, the expression, the wildly swinging paws. Perfect!

LadyHydralisk:
Well, the reason I wrote it is that it almost sounds to ridiculous to be true.
Having my equipment wouldn't turn it into a masterpiece, but at least I could have done some kind of rendering and not just snap a picture of the sketch.
MeliHitchcock:
Love the expressions of both characters, especially the monsters.
Jack Frost:
Great scene. Love how the tree snaps just at the moment the cat escapes into the hands of its owner, and how the monster who could easily reach the cat from the ground lacks the brains to realize it.

I'm new to this site and fairly new to digital art.
I thought this would be a good place to introduce myself.
Some great ideas so far, heres my attempt:

A nice variation of monsters :) And some pretty good expressions on the cats too.
Spent a little too long on this, I just couldn't get a decent looking skin.
Cat is supposed to be petrified. Failed at the stony texture ;|

Adam Bing:
I really like your cat. Can't tell what the monster looks like, except the eyes.
MeliHitchcock:
Your monster is nice. This one is probably the most accurate to the title. I love the cat's expression!
Jack Frost:
Really smooth and composed. You should color it. I would like to see that.
Chrisblah:
Your monster makes me laugh. I like it.

Pencil followed by OpenCanvas then colors tweaked in Photoshop. D:
This was a really fun topic, I enjoyed playing with it very much.
EDIT:
Comments and Suggestions!
LadyHydralisk: Your serpent is pretty adorable, I think the cat is more threatening! With so much green dominating your composition the figure really stands out; I wonder if detailing some leaves and branches would help break it up? :O
watereater: You captured a pretty clumsy but sweet looking monster there. :) Your background seems kind of lacking, considering pushing the picture plane by emphasizing the surroundings?
Adam Bing: Nice POV from behind the cat. :D You should add some color and detail to this -- because it's so pushed in I think it would work well if you did that.
MeliHitchcock: Your monster looks so sweet and goofy. Cat's expression FTW, though...I'm very impressed with your simple-yet-effective rendering of the tree. Nice.
Nightblue: Lovely colors on your genie and again, loving the POV. I'm always taken when people come up with a good camera angle. :D
Jack Frost: Your style is very illustrative. I'm glad you put some color on that -- and while I'm a sucker for lush backgrounds (while I can't complete them myself) I think that as an illustration piece this works graphically well without one. Also, nice take on the assignment, very endearing.
Psychostrat: Nice scale of monster to tree/kitty. I don't know why but something about this reminds me of David's Father by Robert Munsch. :'D
muleskinner: Good choice of perspective and camera angle. Way to push for something unique.
Chrisblah: HA. Nice lips on that thing. XD The background feels like it's lacking but for the cartoon style I think it could work with something simple. :)
Anthis: Keep playing with texture! Lord knows it's not something I know how to do but what is that they say about practice? Nice job blocking in the chick.
airrunkle: I love your color choices and the trees in the background. :D
Storieteller: The text really pushes the sad klutziness of the slow-minded but golden-hearted. Like Adam's I would suggest really pushing the color and detail since the POV is really zoomed in.
senanimach9: Your creepy skull guy reminds me of Kang and Kodos from The Simpsons. I would suggest playing with blending your lines and colors more for smoother effects. :)

Slapped some color on my sketch. The background is kind of dull but I think it works. Tell me what you think.

StorieTeller Its a good idea, but there is no way to tell what has been crushed. Is it a worm? You need a few hints at the perspective, is he on the ground looking up at the tree? If so, put the ground and forshortend legs in the background.

Burrito:
I love the low key + the color you used- the subtle blue in the tree is nice.
Nice composition and shading. Very clean.
Chrisblah:
Beautiful drawing. Very simple + evocative. I don't know how much you know about photoshop...so excuse me if I'm redundant...but 1st scan in your drawing, fix the levels + darken your lines...and erase the white with the magic eraser. (turn the tolerance low + keep "contiguous" selected.) Then make a couple more layers for the background, character, tree, etc. and sandwich these layers between your drawing + background layer. [white or whatever color.] Looks like you're doing good though, good job! The idea + drawing is the most important part of concept art...the freshness of your style...you can render the hell out of a boring drawing or a stale concept, and it will just be a well-rendered boring stale concept...
Boats:
Your color is beautifully subtle, and I love the drawing/expression of the cat.
If you were going to spend more time I'd suggest adding shadows, but I'm sure you know that. It's the idea that counts, so it works.

JIVA*SOUL: Thanks for the comment. I dropped this to do #1302 and then came back to spend some more time on it. I've been trying hard to avoid using black as a crutch. I also went by Mr. Hand's sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=93197&page=2) and was inspired by some interesting airbrushed acrylic paintings in there so I think I will get a bit dirty on the next topic and try some acrylics myself.

MeliHitchcock - I love the emotions, cartoony of course, in your pic.
Anthis - I laughed so hard when I saw this... absolutely masterful twist!

Ryoken; Glad you liked it and got the joke! Was pretty pissed I couldn't get a good petrified look on the cat. Like you, I had an instant idea when I saw the topic. Mine isn't "large and terrifying" though, kinda missed that part and started all excited right away ;|
Like yours alot. You really nailed the feel in a short time span. Even got time for details like the cat's burning tail (solid gold btw), scratch marks on the trees, and the glow on those big nails. Pretty intense picture. Only thing I can't figure out is the little thing falling down just below the cat's head. It seems too extensively detailed for random stuff flying around, but I can't see what it is.
Edit; wait a sec.. could it be a granny? :D
