I'm wondering wether some of you here have any experiences with attaining scholarships or other forms of financial aid in these schools. I plan on taking a degree in Illustration or Fine Arts abroad. I am currently in Malaysia andwill be finishing up my diploma in illustration mid next year so I have to start looking. I can probably only afford $15,000 a year or less, so some form of scholarship or financial aid is something i need to get into the schools i wanna go to.
I have looked around so far these are my current choices. the top two being my preferred choices
Art Center - http://www.artcenter.edu/
Academy of Art - http://www.academyart.edu/
Ringling - http://www.ringling.edu/
SCAD - http://www.scad.edu/
Please let me know if these are good choices, and if you know of other good places for me to apply to. If any of you know any good places to get a degree in Canada that would be great as well because I have family there.
Here are my current works. Some of the freelance stuff I have worked on arent here cuz of NDA's so I hope this is a solid enough folio.

I have no experience with scholarship but I'm hoping to get scholarship at art center in a year. I'm working on my portfolio right now.
What I do know at art center is that they wanna see traditional stuff mostly. Your portraits are really nice but I would add some nice life drawings too.
good luck!

Epias I really love your sketchbook. I hope to get into technical drawings soon. Your work is amazing. I have lots more traditional stuff, just need to take the time to take snaps of them, however if you are talking about vehicles and such, my skills are not even close to yours :P I hope we can both get in art center hahah :P

I got a 15k scholarship to SCAD, and I know with your portfolio you would get at least, most likely more than that. :) Although I was an undergrad, and it seems you would be a graduate student? You might want to take the GRE (if it's offered overseas) you can get scholarships for high scores on that. :)

hey fellas from malaysia and belgium, remember that usually international students get less scolarship than american citizens.
of course it might be different from university to university

moroi - wow congratulations on that! I am crossing my fingers that I will get something along those lines, I'm not sure a diploma student would be concidered as a grad student, i'd have to check on that. What is this GRE you are talking about, I'd like to hear about it. thanks for the reply and info
Painto - Yeah I've heard about that from a friend who's in Academy of Art. Hopefully I can get something good enough that I can at least my parents don't have to chip in too much for me to get in. Thanks for the insight :)

Cok3- Hey, um, since you have a diploma, does that mean you have a degree? I'm sorry, I don't really know anything about how high school/college works outside of the states. But, if you attended a 4yr college/university and received something equivalent to a BA, then you could apply for the graduate program. A GRE is a standardized test (similar to the SAT/ACT I think) that students wanting to go into a graduate program take. While not all schools require it, many do. But, I don't know if it's required of international students. And anyways, who knows you might be applying for undergraduate if you like. :)

Hey moroi, by next year i will have a three year diploma and a BA is what is supposed to come next. I will look into this GRE, I hope i can take it all the way here in malaysia, didn't score too well on SAT's though, most i got was around close to 1200 i think. thanks for the quick feedback, good luck in your search for a school as well :)

Sadly, Ringling offers almost nothing by means of scholarships. The Presidential Scholarship grants 10k a year, and there is a smaller Trustee Scholarship for 7k a year. I'm not sure what they offer by means of financial aid; however, I'm sure it's not a hefty sum. While it is expensive, I will say that that the program is excellent and if you are a hard worker, you will get your money's worth.
Also, check out Sheridan. They have a great program and are in Canada. :)

Hey I suggest you to remove Academy of Art University from your list.
I was attending there and I left before the first semester was over.
They care just about money and u gonna be a number.
I do think the education quality is low and instructors are AAU grads.
You know what I mean?
Art Center/Ringling are a better choice.
When do you plan to go?
Summer 08, Fall 08 ?
(I'm also going to Art Center next year, if I get accepted of course.)

pAinto - I had checked art centers tuition fee's and it says it costs $14,644 per semester and art centers is $16,480 per year? If art centers tuition is double the price then thats kind of out of the question for me, although that is my preffered school to attend.

Moroi - Its good to hear that you got a 15k scholarship to SCAD. I just went to their SCAD day last month, and applied while I was down there too. I plan on turning in the rest of my information in two weeks.
I'm a lil' scared of my portfolio though. I'm hoping that they can offer me a portfolio scholarship.
Is anyone here going to SCAD who is in the animation program?

hey bro,
back when i was in orientation for freshmen in Academy of Art, there was this Hong Kong guy who applied for Master's of Art but couldn't since his Bachelor degree is from a university in HK, so he had to start over from BA there.. kind of a bummer .. so although i'm not 100% sure, but i think a BA from Malaysian Uni won't be adequate too, there's a big chance you have to take BA and can't take MA in Academy of Art ..
although i at first disagree with painto with his word saying Academy of Art is all about money, now that HK guy's case kind of make sense..
i highly recommend you check with them first, shoot them an email i'm pretty sure they'll response coz i asked them to send me via airmail my transcript and they did it within reasonable timeframe.
about Art Center in Pasadena, i have a friend who graduated from there, i might be able to ask her questions or something if you want.. just remind me once u're online
oh and as far as i know, you might also check for student grants besides scholarship, grants might be much less amount compared to scholarship, but heyy it's still better than paying the whole fee right..
also, seeing your skill you might wanna check some german schools hehe, i know in germany a lot of schools are still free, and the german goverment schools usually got all the latest tech and gadgets should you wanna go video or post pro in the future of your study

Max the Mutt in Toronto is a Career College and offers diplomas, not degrees. However, the training you will receive is equal to anything we've seen in degree programs, and better than most. Max the Mutt was founded by artists and animators with a mandate to be available to talent, i.e. affordable.
I believe the tuition will fit into your budget.
Check out the web site, www.maxthemutt.com and, if you have questions or want more info, contact Van Olson at admissions@maxthemutt.com.
