View Full Version : Ways to Raise Money for Revelations

Hi everyone,
I thought I would open up a thread where people can give their ideas on who to raise money so they can go to Revelations. I'm sure money is an issue for a lot of people so hopefully this will be useful. List your situation and people can give ideas.
My situation:
Because I doubt I will win the scholarship from COW 100 my fees would be the price of the workshop ($500) plus air fare to Seattle from SF (anywhere from $200 to $950) and hotel I'm guessing about (50-100 a night for 5 nights so about $350) I'd be spending $1330 more or less in total. I have about $900 (and I know my parents will try to get me to save it but I'd honestly rather go to this than get my first car in a year or two) saved up all ready so I'd still need to make about $430.
I'm too young to legally work (you need to be 16 or if your family is in crisis 14) I was thinking I could paint airbrush things like mailboxes, helmets, toilette seats, etc. and sell them on ebay. I was also thinking that I could maybe get some of my friends and family members to donate their old junk and I sell it or something.
Do you have any ideas?

You can always share hotel rooms with other CAers, Jake. That'd cut the costs down a bit.

Oh ya I forgot about that. I've still got all of the other stuff to worry about though...

You can try Craigslist and see if there are gigs available. Logos, letterheads, etc. Nobody is going to ask your age there. BTW what's your age? if you want to work at 16, you can do it, but your parents must endorse you. I don't know if there's something they have to sign though.
Garage sale? Selling M&M's maybe?

Are there any events in your area that are going to happening? Like for kids or something? Maybe you could sign up to do face painting. Several artists I know have done that before and they made quite a bit of cash. :)

Good idea, Mel! Jake, you could also offer to do odd jobs for your neighbours. Rake leaves, pick up shopping, walk dogs, wash cars? Tell people why you want to earn the money and they may admire your ambition and want to help.
My daughter earned enough for her first mobile phone by ironing for me, helping her father point a wall, and walking the neighbour's dog.

Ha! Good ideas here... Sadly it's not the time of year but if it was the summer I could probably get a gig airbrushing t-shirts.
Damn I've had the same dream twice were I wake up in the morning, turn on my computer, go to CA and I have a pm from Jason saying I'm one of the two winners.... and then I wake up :( Well I can dream can't I :P
What's strange is that this happens over my entire 9 hours of sleep even though in real life it would only take about 5 minutes!

Ah, Jake. You're young (very). If it doesn't work out, just think how strong your sketchbook will be next year, and how much more money you will have saved by then.
Realistically, I doubt if I'd have let my daughter travel so far without me at your age. She's 2 years older and just went to Paris this summer with her friend and her parents, but unaccompanied? Over my dead and cold body.....
I hope you find a way, but you still have time.

uhm, paper route?

Well I REALLY want to go this time because my complete inspiration, Todd Lockwood is teaching there. I bet my dad would come along so I don't think it would be entirely unaccompanied. But you're completely right alesourn. If I don't go to this one I'll probably get to go to the next one.
Idiot Apathy- My town doesn't have one. We have grown men who drive and deliver the papers to the people who get them. Not that many do though from my experience. Most get info off of the www.
I thought this thread would be for everyone but if you want to focus it on me... what ever...

Hey that's a really good idea. There are so many friggin tourists around here and I bet they'd pay ten bucks for some kid to paint their portrait. I'm not very good at portraits though. Maybe they won't mind... thanks for the idea.

even though youre 14 you can still work and get paid. Depending on where you live, lawns are still growing, or in more northern climes you can rake leaves. dont need to be 16 to do that. you can also clean out garages, pools, walk peoples dogs and perhaps babysit. plenty of time to make some cash.

oh man, I've been working since I was 13. Start mowing lawns, clean peoples pools if they have them, wash cars. Come on, your an artist get creative! :D
There are plenty of ways to make money under the table. Go out and look for it
as for traveling, yeah man you have balls. I didn't travel solo until I hit 20, and even then it was a different/new experience.

I actually have to decline on your offer schlichte. My dad would come along if I went so I would need two spaces. I would travel alone in a heart beat but I think hes not ok with it... Hey my dad can sleep on the floor! ;)

How about guilting your family into some early christmas donations? you can throw in some artwork for them, show them your commitment.
I don't have a family, but a couple years ago what I did was paint a fake little donation card, like the ones they send you for the children's aid fund, the red cross, and all those places. It featured a little illustration, and three boxes with donation options:
$20 for the "starving-like-you-but-still-wanna-help" membership,
$50 for the "I-actually-have-a-job-but-I-am-not-a-jerk" membership,
and the $100 "I-am-the-most-awesomest-friend-in-the-world-rich-and-handsome-to-boot" membership.
Lots of people found it hilarious, and they sent me a few bucks...these were my friends though, so I am sure you can get much more money from your family :)

I donate plasma at 50 bucks a week and work 30+ hours at Radio Shack. Not gonna have enough money to make the WS, I don't think. But hitting the family up for early christmas money or birthday money (My birthday is 8 days from xmas) so...yeah. $600 for the WS ticket, $350 for the plane ticket, 100 for the room and 50 for supplies....I'm looking at around $1100 for the entire trip....

Or start being a babysitter; that's what I do.
I get $10 (hahahahaha... I'm still literally laughing out loud when I'm converting to dollars) per hour.
If I babysit the children 2x5 hours a week, I get a nice 100 bucks a week. + It's a super easy job; I just look at some cute children playing and make them some food when I'm hungry anyway =)

Whats the best medium to do portraits in and what on? Can I just draw them in pencil in my sketch book and rip out the page or charcoal on newsprint or conte crayon on charcoal paper or.... WHAT??? I think I've seen most people use charcoal on a kind of dark gray pad. Where do I get a pad like that?
alesoun
November 18th, 2007, 06:05 PM
Jake. What medium are you comfortable working with? No point in going for charcoal/chalks/pastels if you haven't used them before.
Maybe you could design Christmas cards and get them printed up?

I've used chalk, charcoal, pencil, all of that stuff. My favorite is Nero pencil which is like a mixture of chalk and conte crayon. It's really soft but the problem is that you can't erase it which would be difficult as I make mistakes all of the time.

Babysit, babysit, babysit! or watch kids afterschool! ITs a GOLD mine! sure youre gonna put a few hours a day or more, but its worth it,especially if you want to go to that workshop. ask for something like 5 dollars an hour,10 if theyve got more than one. find more than family that needs you to babysit so youve got something to do every night or other night or so. Anoter thing is sell some of your old stuff to classmates.
