class is over!

well i guess should make an announcement since some people have been wondering...

long story short my class of 15 when from 14 assignments turned in on time, to 10 or something, to only 6. so i decided to end things before it just got plain said.

i expected a dropout rate of about 30-40% over severals weeks but not over 60% in 4 weeks.

i feel bad for the students who consistently handed their work in but with the amount of time i put in the video lectures and critiques i couldn't justify it.

in the end i learned quite a bit and i hope that pound for pound the students who participated got something out of it. we only got to scratch the surface but a scratch is better than nothing, especially if you're really itchy!

i personally take it as a sign to either approach this kind of thing on a more professional level (tuition/fee-based) or drop the idea altogether. i'm not sure which way i'll go.

thanks to the admins for taking the time out to setup this sub-section, i really appreciated it and i feel bad it has ended so prematurely.

i'm personally archiving the threads so since the class is over i guess you can delete/archive it as well.

I'm sorry this didn't work out as you had expected, Stevekim. I hope it doesn't discourage you from trying other such experiments here. I think this was a good experience even for the folks who dropped out early. In addition it was educational for everyone who is interested in teaching here, because this is such new territory, and it's going to take some experimentation to find out what works best. I hope you don't feel like this was a failure. [portal]

Sorry it didn't work out as you hoped - I know you put a heck of a lot of effort into your videos, and your crits are greatly appreciated. I think part of the problem might be just that, though. For the two or three weeks between the assignments, their completion, and your video crits, it seemed like nothing was going on. I know you were giving us time to do what we needed to, but I think part of the reason why it fell off was because of the lack of immediate gratification. I think if you tried this again, it might be better to take care of some of the crits for smaller pieces in feedback on the forums, and a video crit of some kind of final project; kind of just to keep the boulder rolling and the majority's interest continually piqued. Again, sorry it kind of fizzled out, I know I'm one of the culprits here, but I really hope you don't give up on this, it's a great help to many of us.

actually..in my college classes..a dropout rate of about 60% WAS pretty common....esp around midterms...4weeks in.
